If you are looking for a comparable drain auger to the Harbor Freight Pacific Hydrastar but at a better price, check out this video. This is a better unit, better price, and longer drain snake.

I purchased this same unit 2 months ago to service my 4 inch sewer pipe thru the clean out insert. I also purchased a sewer line camera from Vevor as well. Pulled out a wad roots 2 feet long. Problem solved. I recommend this product.

Cleaned out 6 inch clay tile to my grease trap no problem. First thing the power cord is to short no wheels but as far as can it do job yes You have to hold in front snake it in pipe couple feet takes lil getting use to. Went in 54 feet more enough power cleaned grease and soap buildup easily, I was paying $60 dollars to rent plus had to shlep in my car so for price well worth it

Harbor Freight also sells a 50 foot extension cable for the Hydrostar, giving you a 100 foot reach overall. Either Auger will do the job, as long as you can reach the clog.
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 2 года назад
Yes, like I mentioned many times I am happy with my Harbor Freight Hydrostar, but it's too short. I don't know if what they sell is an extension or a replacement in case your existing cable kinks or breaks. I personally would not want to put a long extension under the slab of my house where the joint between the two snakes could possibly come undone. Then you can't retrieve the other end and you have a bigger problem on your hands. I prefer one continuous run of cable.
@vintageringsGarry

You need 3 to 5 meter add on cables. No way another 50 ft cable can rotate around basement without killing somebody.

The belt comes already installed. Why would I show how to do something so unnecessary? If you broke your belt and need someone to show you how to install it, then phrase the comment that way. But don't say I failed to show something that isn't needed by anyone.
@rickzabala6020

@@ModernDIYProjects I just received my Vevor. Yes, the belt came with it. It had a pulley on top but was looking for bottom pulley. The belt was just hanging. I observed by looking carefully on your video how pulley was wrapped around the drum. So that is what I did. I didn't say anything about your failure. Other than me trying to figure out how pulley was attached you did a good explanatory job. Thanks for your video and response. ✌️🖖

I see. That was poor assembly by the folks at Vevor. I have two of these units one from Vevor and one from Harbor Freight and they both came fully (properly) assembled when I got them. Sorry if I jumped on you but one of the problems here on YT is that commenters are many times just looking for ways to cut you down. Glad that wasn't the case here.

Thanks for the review. Mine came with the cable all the way in with the tip just out of my reach to pull it out. Any tips to get it out so I can install the cutter?
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 2 года назад
That can happen even when you are using it. The way to do it is to reach inside the drum through one of the openings and push it out. Find the part that comes out of the central drum and just push it out by hand. make sure that the unit is UNPLUGGED when you do this. It has enough torque to break your arm if it starts when you're hand is inside.

When I used it for the first time, I pulled it out manually like you and retracted it manually, and the cables inside were entangled. how do i solve this problem
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects Год назад
This can sometimes happen if you don't coil it back in properly. You have to turn the drum by hand if you have it turned off this way it will coil back in properly. The way to deal with this is to pull the snake out as far as is needed to pull out the tangled part, then coil it back in slowly making sure it doesn't tangle back up.

I’ve got tree roots in my pipes. I need to auger the line once a year. Is this unit powerful enough for tree roots? I have a 4” sewer line, would you recommend a better/larger cutting head?
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects Год назад
This unit could conceivably do it. The obvious question is how thick are the roots? If they are spaghetti type roots, then yeah no problem. If they are pencil thick roots, then maybe a larger auger would be advised. For example, Palm Tree roots can be as thick and as hard as a #2 pencil. That is tough when you have a bunch to cut through, since Palm trees make roots in bunches instead of lone branching roots.
@hiphopsuperman
@hiphopsuperman Год назад
@@ModernDIYProjects no palm trees in my climate! Lol. These are thin spaghetti sized roots. Bunches of them together, every 3 feet where sections of pipe connect together. Looking at the auger bits included, I think the 2 saw blades that form a C would be best. How large is that one? My sewer line is 4”.
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects Год назад
Yeah, that would most likely be your best bet. The good thing is that those are flexible. They should work fine with a 4" pipe, but the good thing is that you can bend them bigger or smaller and shape them to your needs. They are made from a soft metal but are serrated so they should cut the roots just fine.
@hiphopsuperman
@hiphopsuperman Год назад
@@ModernDIYProjects thanks, I figured they could be made larger from the photos on their website. I think I may just go ahead and buy this auger. But could you go ahead and get a clog so we can get a follow up video?!?! Lol. Thanks for the great and detailed review video.

I’ve snaked my line each year, and it’s quite easy to do. The hardest part is getting the huge auger up and down the stairs. Having this unit right beside the clean-out will make it so much easier.

Any tips for directing the snake into the pipe? I have a clean out in my front yard that is currently filled with murky water. I want to go out toward the street but can’t see which way the snake is heading. Thanks!
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 2 года назад
There is no magic to that. Unless you know the pipe layout (have some blueprints) all you can do is guess. You go by feel and see how the snake feels and what direction is seems to be going. That is why I prefer the manual feed instead of the power feed so you can feel how things are progressing. Take a guess and if that doesn't work, pull it back and try again angling it in a different direction.

Yes, I used it a few weeks ago. I didn't make a video because it was difficult day weather wise and I was dealing with a really stubborn clog. I had to get the clog fixed before the rain started coming down on me so I didn't have time to film it. The machine itself worked perfectly. My clog was way, far down at the 75 ft mark so I really had to work hard to clear it out.

Generally speaking, the 1/2 inch is intended for 2 to 4 inch pipes. The 3/8 inch is for 1 inch pipes, up to 4 inch.

@@ModernDIYProjects It is a good presentation. Just one question, would a unit with the forward pushing attachment be easier to use? I just have a coil snake that has a manual motor, that motor being me LOL. I have some time pushing it through a clog with all the twist & turns in the line.
@ModernDIYProjects
@ModernDIYProjects 2 года назад
Yes, the motorized attachment on the front of the more expensive units will definitely make the job easier for you. I have never used those for two reasons: 1- They cost more, and 2- I am afraid that the unit will keep pushing and possibly get stuck or kink in the pipe and I wont feel it until it's too late. With the manual unit you feel what the snake does. With the motorized one you wont. If you are comfortable with those two issues, then I see no reason why not get get the motor unit. I'm sure plumbers that do this all day, every day, probably have the motorized one.
