Explains how to calculate the electric field between two charges and the acceleration of a charge in the electric field. You can see a listing of all my videos at my website, www.stepbysteps...
An electric field is an area that surrounds an electric charge, and exerts force on other charges in the field, attracting or repelling them. Electric field is abbreviated as E-field. Electric fields are created by electric charges. The electric strength is defined as the number of newtons of force per coulomb of charge.
The SI unit for electric field strength is volt per meter (V/m) or Newtons per coulomb (N/C) is also used as a unit of electric field strength. On an atomic scale, the electric field is responsible for the attractive force between the atomic nucleus and electrons that holds atoms together, and the forces between atoms that cause chemical bonding. Electric fields and magnetic fields are both manifestations of the electromagnetic force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature.

E2 should be: 3.75*10^6 Hence, the actual Etot (total electrical field at that point) = E1 + E2 = Etot 8.4375*10^7 + 0.375*10^7 = 8.8125*10^7 N/C. (Arsal Asghar already pointed out this mistake but I haven't found anyone who showed everything once again. So here you go.)

Hi, can you explain why when a particle is placed at the midpoint between the positive and negative charge, the resultant force is at a minimum?
@stepbystepscience
@stepbystepscience 7 лет назад
By minimum do you mean zero? Because the opposing forces are equal.
@toms4669
@toms4669 7 лет назад
oh sorry I meant a particle with a positive charge, so it would be repelled by the positive side and attracted to the negative side. forces are in the same direction. but I don't understand why the force on the particle is at its lowest at the mid point
@stepbystepscience
@stepbystepscience 7 лет назад
OK how about this?....by minimum I am assuming that you do not mean zero. It is at a minimum because the distance from each charge is the greatest. From coulomb law the force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance. So as the distance to one of the charges decreases, the force goes up exponentially. Try it out with some simple numbers. Make all three of the charges 2 C and the distance between the two outer charges could be 0.10 m. Leave k out. Put the charge right in the middle, calc the resultant force. Then move the charge over a few centimeters and calc the resultant force again. See what you get? Let me know

Hi, I don't know if you still check the comments, but if you do, great Do you know any formula I can use to calculate the electric field between two charges without knowing the value of d1 and d2 (the distance between each charge relative to P), I only have the value of the two charges (Q1 = 6 * 10^(-9)C, Q2 = -9 * 10^(-9)C), the distance between the charges (r = 0.04m) and ofc the coulumb's constant If you read this please, please help me lol

Thank you for the amazing video! :D I was wondering, if the proton was not a proton, but something with more or less charge. For example a particle with charge of 3 C, would we then have to change the value of the electric field, before we use Newton's seccond law? Because the electric field is defined per unit charge, so it we have a charge of +3, would we have to triple the value of the field?
@stepbystepscience
@stepbystepscience 7 лет назад
No, the electric field strength would still be the same, the force would be different the the amount of charge would be different.

I would however love to know why do we always ignore the negative sign when we substitutes the values of charges (even when its a negative) Because isnt the negative tell us that there are more electrons than protons thus its Negatively Charged, yet we ignore this fact when doing the calculations... Why?
@stepbystepscience
@stepbystepscience 3 года назад
@@Asra_Fareed Good question. Because the electric field strength is a vector quantity, there are two parts to describing it; the direction and the magnitude. The negative and positive signs are used to determine the direction of the field at a given location, but when we calculate the magnitude of the field we leave the signs off the charges. Does that help?

You may want to use the minus sign to determine the direction of the field but....that is not how you should do it. The direction of the field is first determined by the direction on the force on the positive test charge. The magnitude of the field is then calculated using the magnitudes (without the signs) of the charges. If there is more then one charge then add all the magnitudes together. Minus if they point to the left and positive if they point to the right. Does that help?

Excuse me, but why don't you use unit vectors in your calculations? I'm only asking because I get so confused using you method of imagining the direction of electric field first. I guess I just learn better in mathematical terms.
