When I started playing guitar it was during the 80's and early 90's. I was one of the few females in my area who played. I wanted to be a heavy metal guitarist and my parents told me that they would allow me to pursue that provided that I also take classical. Much to my frustration at the time, I was a much better classical guitarist than commercial guitarist. Today I am so happy that they "forced" me to learn classical. I currently teach anatomy and physiology (hence the skeleton) but my classical guitar feels like my old friend. I love to hear you play and you inspire me to return to my old friend :)

You are wonderful... The difficult thing about electric guitar is playing clearly, without unwanted noises. Muting is not always easy.
@petecanthropus9947
@petecanthropus9947 6 лет назад
Muting is almost never easy, and it's very difficult when playing fast, loud, and with lots of distortion. That's just ONE of the many difficulties when playing electric, different from the ones playing classical. Two very different instruments which require completely different techniques. You can be a virtuoso playing one of them and at the same time absolutely clumsy playing the other.

I’m a classical guitar player myself but about three years ago I joined a punk rock band and had to start playing electric guitar(although I still play classical guitar as my main instrument) and when I started playing the electric guitar i used classical technique but after a while the strings started to break my nails so I started using a pick as well and from one guitarist to another I really recommend using a pick for electric guitar as it allows you to unlock all the tone off a electric guitar. By the way love you videos

Your evaluation is correct, they are different. However in my experience, it is easier for a classical guitarist to play electric guitar, than the reverse. Sadly, classical guitar is under appreciated in my country.

Dan Johnson With Electric the emphasis is on original songs and writing own material , Classical is established pieces. Electric has its own technique issues, Tapping, Sweep Picking, Alternate Picking and playing in Time to fixed beat, Classical time keeping is not so regimented. Rhythm Guitar and improvisation is also another skill. Classical also don't play Swing beats in the same way, you have Jazz, Rock and Blues with their own skill set. I see difficulties with both.
@houstondanny1344

Red Yellow Ledbetter II Yes. You are right. The intricacies of guitar are many. Some people forget that Segovia also composed, and many classic pieces are original compositions from past masters. You've made excellent points. I sometimes wonder if Segovia was in awe of the expertise and inventiveness of guitarists like Jimi Hendrix. Jazz guitar and Jazz rock fusion are as difficult and intricate as Classical. One man's opinion.

Dan Johnson have to agree with you Dan. I started off with a Dreadnought guitar in my teens. like everyone, I tried to apply the same technique to a Les Paul - result total mud. it was not until I studied classical, and learned to play intervals and triads that I could get to grips with an electric. the discipline of scales and arpeggios when combined in improvisation suddenly unlock the possibilities.
@john497

It really depends on the style of music though. Not everyone, i.e., is just going to be able to play Thrash Metal and speed picking just because they are a good classical guitarist. For the most part the left hand will be there (being that the player is right handed) but It usually will take some time and may be just as difficult vice versa.

Tatyana, you are a very expressive musician! The electric guitar may have the most complex range of expressivity of all instruments. Here's why: As well as all of the classical guitar articulations, there are many others made possible by the tremolo system, increased sustain, volume and tone controls, many ways to colour the notes with varying amounts of harmonic overtones, and many other exotic articulations (see Steve Vai). It can sound like a smooth choir in a cathedral, a wind instrument, a percussion battery, an Arabic intoned Oud or a spaceship, or an explosion or rumble of thunder!) Synthesisers can do all of this too of course, but it is the human expression of touching the real strings directly, which produces the complexity of expression. Sorry I've said too much!

I started playing the electric guitar about 15 years ago. I started playing heavy metal and thrash metal in the beginning. After some years, I switched to the classical guitar. As you said, it's much easier to play the electric guitar because it's smaller, the strings are much closer to the fretboard and also the multieffects help too especially with reverb.

Tatyana, you have a tender touch on the electric guitar. It wants to play for you. Do not let it. Stay tender and it will sing with your fingers. Electric is from another world. All instruments made with electricity have been welcomed into this world I mention here. Many times I play my electric guitar with no electricity. Loud makes it bigger. Yet 440-A will remain 440-A. Music is much like cooking. It all depends on taste and how many dinner guests you are serving. Where you serve affects the acoustics. Acoustics is the flavor. Keep it low and cook it slow. I find it delicious with small amounts of other instruments added to it. I love to hear you play with your other musician friends. I love beautiful things. And people. With love and respect for beauty, Mark. (:

Thank you for sharing your views on electric guitar! I have been playing classical guitar for many years and started playing electric only few months ago. The technique required such as bending, sliding, pull offs, are so completely different! The music repertoire and genre are so different too. I am having great fun but worried that it may mess up my classical technique eventually - but the adventure is worth it!

Flip the script, and I know exactly how you feel. I've played electric for pretty much the entirety of my over 30 years playing guitar, while merely dabbling in classical and acoustic. When the pandemic hit, and I didn't have a band to play in for a long while, I went over to playing classical as my primary style thinking my Metal chops would give me an edge. Nope! I've pretty much had to re-learn how to play all over again.

You could use a similar analogy with the voice, classical singers very rarely lose their voice when they get older but rock and roll singers almost always do. A classical singer could sing rock and roll a lot easier than a rock singer could sing classical. Apples and Oranges.

Ah, the "Which is better? question. You have done a very good job addressing the subject. Young students in the sciences always seem to want the one and only correct and true answer for all time. Differences, maybes, possibilities and uncertainties, and transient "facts" don't fit their bill. It's seems to be same with guitar: Classical or electric? Many woodwinds use, or are based on, the Boehm system of fingering or keying, but no-one asks which is better: Clarinet, flute, bassoon or clarinet? More instruments = better menu.
@waldmeister0815

I play mostly electric guitar and most of the time with a high gain sound. One of the biggest differences in my opinion is that you have an amplifier as an additional "instrument". You have to learn to use it to create a good sound. Also the volume and tone controls are very nice tools to use, especially the volume control. Techniquewise the most important thing is to mute your unused strings. Otherwise you will hear weird sounds just by looking at your guitar. And bendings. Always practice them. And vibrato You will be judged by other guitarists by the quality of your bendings and the "feel" of your vibrato. (I think the Vibrato is a very personal, delicate thing to a guitarist. At least it is for me)
@user-eb8mi3xi5f
@user-eb8mi3xi5f 4 года назад
I think bending and vibrato are indeed important techniques on guitar..You can express your sound through bending and vibrato. That's why I love David Gilmour or those blues guitarists..Some say bending is just a gimmick or showing off, and I highly disagree with it..

There are so many totally different techniques that exist on both electric and Classical guitars, but that are maybe exclusive to each. I also know that yes it can be easier to sound more full and epic on the electric with less effort, but only to untrained ears because a really good electric player will instantly know when someone is hiding behind too much electronic effects. A really good electric player can play with almost no effects and sound amazing, because they will have spent years perfecting their technique, e.g. Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Frank Gambale and others.

Hi, Tatyana; As an electric guitarist, I truly appreciate your music. Most of us started in garage bands, and only a very few of us got serious. Watch Jeff Beck`s `Live At Ronnie Scott`s` for tips on right-hand technique; he switches freely from pick to fingernails. As a word of advice, try a pre-1995 American made Fender Stratocaster with a vintage tweed Fender Champ amplifier (pre-1960). Yamaha makes a great Saxophone, but their guitars are strictly pickup trucks; pros don`t use them. Keep up the good work, please, and I hope that you find the time to explore the electric guitar`s possibilities.

You're so right about the different feeling and textures of electric guitar versus classical. I think, you can play the electric guitar with your finger as well as the classical guitar but without aggressive distortion because the "definition sound" is very minimal. You can try to play with a bigger set of strings for electric guitar with low action in the neck! You can play all kind of music such as jazz, blues and whatever! The distortion is no necessary to play! Great job Tatyana! Поздравляю! :-)

Anyway, to experience this expressivity, get a smooth overdrive sound and back off the volume/gain so that it sounds clean at pp, but 'rock' at ff. Also add some light delay/reverb. Most importantly, mute notes you aren't playing with the underside of your left fingers and the side of your right hand. you can also mute some of the notes you are playing for a dynamic, timbral variety.

Sounds in part like you could use some higher output pickups that have gone microphonic, most guitarists hate when they do so, but when a pickup goes microphonic it starts to pickup all the little picking nuiances or playing, and are very unforgiving of any mistakes as the dynamics stand out more. Something else you may find interesting is the fishman triple play, it turns the string vibration of a guitar into midi signals so you could get all the effects and what not while on an acoustic, though im not certain if its piezo elements will register nylon strings

I’ve played electric for several years (just bought an acoustic 😃), but just realized a couple weeks ago that I have been hiding behind the effects. I decided to play “clean” and found my chording to be rather sloppy. The delay, reverb, chorus and overdrive that I use (almost always on) covers up the mistakes. I would give anyone wanting to play electric this advice: start with acoustic, or without any effects until you develop good skill.

Respect varied opinions- the full size jazz electric guitar is another sonic option. Aside from a Gibson- Guild, Epiphone, or Ibanez are alternatives. I especially like the full bodied models played with the selector switch in the neck pickup position. They’re not classicals, but their shape, body depth, and round sound offer an interesting acoustic- like alternative when played with right hand classical fingerpicking. Also consider that the late Gabo Szabo played a Martin steel string with a sound hole pick up without added effects. Solid body electrics are really for speed, string bending, long sustained solo licks, or crunchy distortion chord playing.

Which guitar is harder or easier to play? The simple answer is that they can both be hard and require different technical skills. It also depends what you're going for. Both illicit different emotions, so it becomes a very personal decision. I love the classical guitar and played it for years. But for me, I find the electric guitar easier to improvise with, which helps me express my emotions better. However, there was a stage in my life where the classical guitar was a very emotional experience for me too.

Plectrum for me is all depending what music I play, yes i use plectrums on classical guitar (everyone shudders with the idea of plectrum on nylon strings but I do not care, the classical guitar is the only acoustic guitar I own) but fingerstyle for classical music always. If I learn classical guitar music, I always set myself a rule, learn the song on both the classical guitar and the electric guitar because of the spacing of the strings. I have a special setting for playing classical music on electric guitar, always a clean bell like tone using a Vox amp and neck pickup to get an almost angelic chimy tone

This makes me feel better. I'm not comfortable playing an acoustic usually. I get used to the light touch you can use with your left hand on an electric, but you really have to hold the strings down on an acoustic, hand gets fatigued quickly. There's even differences between electric guitars, the way the neck feels. A person can get a cheap electric that plays well, adjust the neck, and then change the electronics to get a better sound out of it.Do you play violin or cello? I find that very difficult. I can play mandolin okay, figure out the finger positions of it being tuned in fourths, but trying to work a bow with one hand and finger with the other hand, while holding it with your chin, I think I'm missing that part of my brain. Entertaining video.

I think that electric guitar does have a steeper learning curve than classical guitar and that the basics of electric guitar are much simpler comparatively, however if one considers the pinnacle of electric guitar, I don't think that is easy. Just listen to Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert or Steve Vai. Things like sweeping cleanly and string skipping at 200 bpm are kinda insane!!

So cool. Diversity is key, because there's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all instrument. One can not play the romantic piano repertoire on a four octave virginal, or Paganini on a bowed dulcimer - yet these are all cool, full valid instruments in their own context, or as a part of any kind of experimentation. It's mastery and musicality that matters. Plus personality, and you're a great player and an AWESOME person!

I like very much see you playing classical guitar. I also like playing classical guitar more than electric guitar

I love playing both. I have a two Classical Guitar, a Mandolin and four 6-String Electric, one 8-String and a bass in this room with me. I play all of them a little differently because I play them to their strengths (or at least what I would consider their strengths). Depending on how I feel or what I want to play. It's great fun. Admittedly I practice electric without a pick more often than not unless I'm plugged in and need a pick for articulation or certain desired dynamics. Cool to hear your take on electric guitar!

This is just a hint of what is possible on the electric guitar (of the modern 'superstrat' type). And with all of these aspects of expression comes the potential of far more sophisticated artistry than is possible with the acoustic guitar. The very best electric guitarists in the world (but not many of them) do use the instrument to near it's full expressive potential - and I don't mean simply playing fast!

I play electric and clasical guitar and i don't have any problems with the plectrum, both are diferents and i think the secret to play both guitars it's separate de tecnique from de right hand because in the left hand the tecnique it's in a 80% the same

I feel your artistry is with classical guitar. I play both, but as you said there is a world of difference between them. I think you have a lot of people helping you develop your artistry, so if I might say a word... don't smoke. You have potential and it would be sad to see it come to a short end. I have seen talented people die too early from it. Yes, you are young and feel invincible, but think of yourself and your art first. Think of the training you are putting into your art -- you are also training yourself to smoke (believe it or not). So please stop this habit... ALL THE BEST!!!!!

Dear Walter, thank you very much for your such kind comment and for being worried about me - I appreciate it really a lot! But please don't worry, I don't smoke and have never smoked, it was meant just like a joke in a video, I thought that probably in that way I will be closer to a real electric guitar player :-)

Good, that makes me feel better. I see what you mean about feeling closer to the bad boy, rebel image of electric guitar players. You have the same kind of people in the classical world too, I would imagine (Liszt, Paganini, etc.). And then there are people who try to straddle both worlds like Yngwie Malmsteen: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZKbPPuaHnxw.html However the subtleties, especially that I hear in your music, can be lost if you are just hearing a tornado going on all the time, which people like Ygnwie are prone to put out. Here he is again on both acoustic and electric and sometimes I think it borders on self indulgence or parody, but he has skill and a loyal following: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dmFzT_BtVLk.html Again, all the best and much happiness to you!

It certainly appears from the quality of your sound control and vibrato that playing the electric turned out to be a lot harder than you thought.

I too play classical guitar, but not even close to your standard or repertoire, You do play exceptionally well. I do also play electric guitar and own 6 different types/models, and found some good sounds to play classical music. I would not use the amp the way you do, there are hundreds of different sounds and tones you can get with different guitar and amp combinations. I enjoy playing Bach and Vivaldi that suits my style and taste. In fact I like the Bach Cello suite #1 in particular, played on Gretsch semi hollow through a fender amp. To do it, I shorten my right hand nails to just above the finger tip and use the finger tips to soften the sound to my liking.

Don’t apologize, classical guitar is harder because there’s rules, procedures, music theory, every mistake is heard. On and on!
