Hi Tatyana: Nice video... Two questions: 1.- How do you tune your guitar?. 2.- What is your opinion about using an electronic tuner vs. using a tuning fork? Greetings from México.

One very good way to ascertain the quality of a classical is to play scales past the twelfth fret and at the twelfth use the natural octave harmonics. Then compare how it sounds when the notes are stopped instead of being played as harmonics. This gives a very good indication of how well the intonation is balanced. If you hear wolf notes it means that the instrument wood structure is not well tuned and balanced. If the stopped notes differ in character too much from the natural harmonics then the intonation of the guitar and possibly the fretting is not accurate. A well balanced instrument will always sound great even at lower volumes and be a pleasure to hear. Having a guitar that is just loud is not always desirable especially if it sounds inaccurate.

Eric Reesor, thank you for a very helpful tip. Too often a new guitar is judged favourably as to whether it plays well in the open position.
@allan2098
@allan2098 7 лет назад
Some good info here. I have never come across a newly built high end classical guitar with any intonation issues but some older ones can be a problem. Usually this is caused by inferior repair work or refretting. I once found a dead note on a £10,000 in a shop due to a refretting shambles. As Eric states, harmonics are a good indication of this. My method is, start at the top of your budget. No cheap guitars which are not hand made are any good. Go for a reputable maker. Do your research. Look at build quality, it should be a work of art. Play EVERY fret with chromatic scales. Lastly play some bass heavy pieces (Lobos prelude no1) and some treble pieces, (ie; Tarrega ) and if they sound nice your on a winner!

Thanks for the great tips! I hadn't thought about bringing one's current guitar to a shop for a playing comparison. I also like the point about how room dynamics will reveal subtle differences. That was telling since most people play at home. Great stuff!!

Tatyana. There is actually now a scientific formula for deciding how many guitars you really need. The formula is n+1, n being the number of guitars you have already. Hope that clears it up.x

Hey Tatyana. I love your videos! I play 2 guitars - the "Cordoba Torres" and the "Cordoba 55fce Ltd. Macassar Ebony", as I want to play rock n' roll aswell and like the percussive element that the nylonguitars give, rather than the steelstrings. I play the Cordoba Torres for "classic" (well, classic and fingerstyle songs like Sungha Jung, Igor Presnyakov etc.), makes it so much easier with the smaler scale! The Cordoba 55fce Ltd. Macassar Ebony, I use for everything - classic, rock, unplugged and plugged! Have a good day my friend!

Tatyana One terrible thing about buying a guitar is the fact that the shops are located all over the world and we are only in one place. We can purchase online and pay shipping costs, but wouldn't it be nice if all the great shops were local for us to check out. Kelly

The sound on your first guitar is not weak in the low range, but it is not a concert guitar. The second guitar is made to project like monster in a concert hall, and is overwhelming for a small room. Not all guitarists are interested in instruments or guitar constructions devised for bigger halls.

Very intelligently presented! I always try not to buy a guitar, a flute or any other musical instrument I play without playing / trying it first. The comparison of the two guitars was also very interesting. If you had just tried the first one, it would have been perfectly OK and acceptable, and maybe you would have walked out of the music store with it. But the second guitar, what I noticed was an amazing depth, complexity and richness of sound, tone and overall musical character that was totally lacking in the first guitar.

Thanks Tatyana for the good run through on the do's and don'ts on this topic. 1. How about electronics (e.g.: electronic tuner, preamp etc.) ? 2. Guitar with a cut-away design or not? Thanks in advance.
@plutik666
@plutik666 7 лет назад
1. piezo alone kills any nuances of the guitar and sounds extremly dull without a proper signal chain. in general amp electronics are best used in combination with a microphone and a good sound engineer. if a direct signal is a stage or recording requirement, a dedicated electroacoustic guitar will always beat any non-invasive solutions. also it's adviseable to have monitor headphones or speaker ready, preferably passive ones. piezo clip tuners, even the cheapest ones, do their job tho. 2. cutaway will always sound a little bit 'brighter' in clean, non cut will have that little extra bass in comparison. but the difference fades away the moment you turn on the EQ. personally i am a purist, but i hope it helps.

You don't choose a guitar ..... let it choose you. ( play it and feel) you will know when you have found the one. Specifics. if your a Beginner 150-300 to learn and see if you like guitar enough to go up ( go to a pawn shop) you would be surprised. If your Advanced 1000-2000. If your (Tatyana Level ) you know what you like and are willing to spend your life searching for The One. Pro. $$$$ varies in desire

Hi Tatyana, I see your guitar has a golpeador, is it a flamenco instrument? do you play any flamenco or only classical music? your talent is a gift to all people, thank you!
@MrDogonjon
@MrDogonjon 7 лет назад
She is right about playing the instrument however with auctions and on line second hand instruments you may be competing with a collector for a valuable instrument so you take risks to get better timing advantages like throwing down an early buy now price. My self last fall bought a Godin Multiac Grand Concert SA and Roland gR33 guitar synthesizer with the hope that adding midi voicing to guitar would recreate my violin/ cello/ guitar ensemble. The results are pretty good but it's a love hate relationship. Constant experimentation and adapting p technique to isolate baselines playing flesh no nail to get bowed string attacks, using clicky plucky stacatto attack to mask synth sound. It's fascinating but if you were expecting it to play like a guitar through the synth you will be disappointed. There are degrees of expression that are enhanced and the touch/ feel can be adjusted still thee are times when the box doesn't get it and creates something weird and awful.

Thanks for your tips! I just suggest you to talk more about what we can get with each range of budget. Students sometimes got low money to spend, what is the basic classic guitar? Also, most of products I know have a curve of quality-price, sometimes you are just paying to have a brand or a specific feature. My guess: the difference between a 500 guitar to 1000 one will be much more noticeable than 1000 to 2000, I guess, am I right?
@plutik666
@plutik666 7 лет назад
Actually it is the other way around: all "1k+ high class" guitars are very different and have often a very distinct character in tone and feel due to wood choices, luthier skill, age and uniqueness. Most Luthiers differ into 4-5 "Quality-classes" and it's kinda hard to stick a strict pricetag due different prodoct lines for different purposes and skill levels. 0. "The Bad Decision - i can play wonderwall skill". Anything below 200EUR or mostly 300 in retail is basicly overpriced burning wood aimed to the christmas consumer market. ex. Benton, Fender, even Höfner. 1. "The Basic - Student skill". A massive top and a clean rosewood fretboard is "the basic". You can easily find a very good study guitar for 200-400EUR, ex. Takamine, Höfner, i personally think that Yamaha especially the CG series are way underrated for the low budget. But it's kinda a grey zone, some manufactures have models with an overall good guitar body but save on mechanics or shipping costs. 2. "The Middle - Concert skill". 400-1000 is kinda a twilight zone where you "pay for the brand", ex. ibanez, cordoba, martinez, ramirez and other generic spanish sounding names. But you can also find a good Hanika or Alhambra out of spruce or cedar with a reinforced neck or even a double top in that range. 3. "High Class - Artist skill". It is hard to range here. About above 700-800+ you start paying not only for the material or the difficult construction of the instrument, but also for the rosettes, extravagant mechanics, or some sort of wood out of the Fangorn Forests. If you have 1,5k+, don't even bother looking for a brand there, search for a good luthier. There are a lot of luthiers who sell quality handmade guitars for a low price, but they look or sound sometimes very dull and other times very excellent. A lot of luthiers don't even sell their "basic" models under 2k. If price is only on inquiry, double and tripple up your budget. 4. "Master Class - Maestro skill". 1,5k-3k and above you can order a custom made instrument if you know the luthier in person. A good, known and well experienced luthier can and will easily charge 6k+. 5. "Priceless Class - Tatyana Ryzhkova skill". Some 102 years old guitars, or weird patented nanotechnology stuff made by dwarfes with virgin tears as adhesive. If priced, mostly more worth than a new car or a small house, but can sound like a wal mart guitar if not properly restored due age or just from a hisorically overrated luthier. Just remember, it's a huge market, it has nice and bad mass products, own overpriced or underrated brands and expensive but low quality hand made products, due high manufacturing costs and cheap and high quality products due smart opportunity costs. Also important for students: sometimes small wood imperfections can half the price of an instrument. I hope it helps a bit. And remember: the beauty of a sound comes from the hands, not from the instrument alone.

Thank you for your excellent contribution! I understand Tatyana wish to give us a "methodology" to buy the right guitar, but sometimes we need more a general "prescription", like you did. I learn to play classic guitar when young, and stopped by a decade, or more. When I decided to go back, I had difficulties even to tune the guitar - rusty ear! So an untrained ear can't perceive the difference of good and bad instrument - there is some "audio blindness". Your scale provide general lines so the guy know how much money he needs, what kind of store to go, brands, etc.. In Brazil, there is some local production with "premium" lines that I will take a look, as Di Giorgio, but there is also some interesting brands as Ibanez and Yamaha with good local support.

If you are a total beginner on a budget China is producing solid sitka spruce or cedar topped, mahogany back and sides classicals of great quality these days for around £200/200 EUR Today a £200 entry level guitar is as good as one costing 4 times that price 10 years ago. They aren't pro instruments of course but for beginners they are excellent and more than adequate and they sound great and are well made enough that they wont impede your learning. Check out sites like Thomann and Gear4Music - these kinds of sites retail them

I should admit that I didn't watch this program end-to end, but I would like to say that it is important to choose a guitar with reinforced neck (either ebony strip or truss rod) to avoid future disappointment. The Raimundo Black Limba has no reinforcement.
