I know the museum in Williamstown has one, and Steamrail have at least two. Hopefully Steamrail can get their E's running again, although I don't think Metro will let them do it.

Unfortunately the main restorer who was in charge of the E 1106 restoration hasn't returned to Newport for a while and he's the only one who knew the wireing of the E class locos so 1106 has just been pushed out the back

The E class used to be able to pull quite long and heavy loads. Notable was their ability to climb the long hill with such loads between Noble Park and Springvale. Every weekday afternoon, one arrived at Oakleigh from Dandenong and spent a couple of hours or so there shunting to the factories and for other merchants who arrived to unload and load their consignments of briquettes and all sorts of goods to and from there. There was a respectable sized briquette siding and more where the shopping mall now is situated. Back in the days when there were railway gates at Oakleigh, the arrival of this train caused bottleneck traffic jams even back then as the gates had to remain closed while the train firstly passed through over the Warrigal Road crossing and then had to back up through the no 1 platform to access the yards for shunting. This was generally near the peak times and the chaos was made worse by the suburban trains keeping the gates shut against road traffic too. Back then, only about every second suburban train ventured beyond Oakleigh in the off peak periods. Oakleigh was a major terminous on the suburban network. Beyond Huntingdale, which was then named 'East Oakleigh', there wasn't much business for the suburbans because it was more or less considered as - out in the country. In their time, the E class electrics performed important essential duties. They could double head with one crew. Apparently the first Victorian Railways locomotives with which this could be done although this in effect was a feature of the Tait suburbans. Apparently they had similar electrical equipment to the Tait suburbans.

well, the taits are allowed to run which is promising, although iirc the e class had a reputation for giving crews electric shocks which ohs might not be pleased with
