Electric Motorcycle Conversion Honda XL175 #2: The Motor- QS 138 Mid Motor. What a pain! 

Good point about making things in America especially in the times like this. It makes no sense that you cant get something like that here in the states. Period!

The qs138. 70h can do 20kw I do it all the time, I have about 5 of them. I even have a dirt bike with 2 motors 2 controllers on one jackshaft system pulling about 700nm of tq. I also build my batteries from lipo cells etc..

Normally the "do it in America" attitude I kinda scoff at saying *we created this outsourcing beast, now we live with it* but I'll be damned, more and more it's turning into *yeah, we probably should recoup our independence on them*. Sadly we waited till we were this deep in a hole to recognize it.

Is that the 90h cause if it is it can handle over 32kws of power which would be a bac8000 at like 400a and rediculous phase amps if its the 70h you can handle over 20kw of power with bac4000..... nucular are also a good option 😉 with 100a your not even scratching the surface of what that motor can do (either version can handle 10kw continuous with ease)

Dude I feel your pain. I recently recieved a kit from them and I had to make quite a few wiring modifications. The communication has been good for me but there is a lot more hassle that goes into getting their kits to work than their should be. I would way rather pay for American made but there just aren't many options.

planning an e moto conversion project and the sense i am getting is a hub motor seems easier, but unless you know for a fact that the motor can go in the swing arm without modification it may turn into a huge headache generally you will need to modify your swing arm for the motor axle itself, plus add a new mount for rear brake, and that is a lot of sensitive work that you better be a skilled fabricator for. whereas the mid drive all you have to do is make a mounting plate, which there are many companies online that will cnc cut a plate for relatively cheap, some even provide simple CAD software for you to use

I hope to have a similarly styled hub drive motorbike this Summer. Love the style of this vintage bike.

Few years ago I took a Honda rear 50cc friction drive and a 1000w 48v front hub motor. The front hub completely out performed the Honda 50cc.

Johnny, great project. If you can mount the sprocket on motor close to swing arm and centered on swing arm it will keep chain as close to same slack through the massive 4 inch rear travel on the swingarm. Welding the brackets to back is worth the time. Find a good welder person that can make and i install rear brackets with motor adjusters for chain tension. This will be a super cool electric retro on an old classic Honda. It will be well worth the cost for a valuable classic "Electrified" by Johnny". The Honda EBJ Retro. Cant wait to see it done.

That's a big chunk of motor, bigger than an alternator in a car. I also think that electrical items should be made here in the U.K. or Europe. We are too dependant on China for almost everything. My communication between Junstar the seller I bought my Bafang kit from on Amazon has been great. In fact one of my hydraulic brake sensors went faulty last week and I sent him a message via Amazon asking for a replacement and he sent 2 new sensors within 1 week. There is a shipping problem world wide due to the pandemic. It is mainly due to the cost of containers which have tripled in price for shipping goods, also there is a staff shortage at ports, so most ships are not being off loaded fully. The bike is coming along great apart from the throttle issue. :)

That was not a rant that is something I guarantee you well over 100,000 of us think about every time we deal with these e-bike kits

I have two questions, you said when you worked at the shop Hub Motors broke a lot of spokes oh, so I thought that a bigger motor would even be worse at breaking spokes? Also I was wondering do you think it would be safe to buy a sur ron from Alibaba? I think you're one of the most knowledgeable ebike guys on RU-vid. If you want the best value for your $ build your own battery- the battery cells I chose is Molicel P42A 21700 4200mAh 45A Battery. Has the best performance from what I've been able to research. You'll get about 1300 watts for an hour out of a 10 lb battery pack (80 cells for a 72v 4 parallel 20 series battery that can put out 160 Amps. For your application I would use 3 of them (240 cells) and will cost around $1200

I clicked this because i was wanting to see how it ran but, Dude all i seen was talk the whole way thru. When you get it running with vary little talk i would be glad to see what it does.

The only rare earth magnet manufacturer and mine for materials to make rare earth magnets neodymium magnets is in China therefore they are the only real manufacturers of motors because of the magnets

Generally speaking the perplexing paradox you point out rings true the world over. We have multiple capabilities and existing infrastructures in place to essentially supercharge national economies. Bicycle shortage easily fixed. Electric bikes and vehicles conversion services: solve a shit ton of unemployment and income problems, as well as both diversify existing industries and address the global shortage shenanigans. A good portion of the “tech” needed for this was solved and engineered 50-100 years ago. We don’t need to redesign anything, we just need to change the order of operations. Then again , we could easily solve homelessness but for some reason park benches and tents under bridges are still where it’s at. It’s borderline maddening to see how inefficient humans can sometimes be.

Made domestic this kit would be around 1k. Most people don't want to pay that.

i think the motor is to small suggestion would be netgain warp -9 motor and 1000 amp controller

In another video you'd said that chain/belt drives are generally better but that for motorcycles the efficiency differential at higher power is much less and you prefer hub motors. Why is that? Is it just that electric belt drive conversions on motorcycles are a pain in the ass?

Why don't you mount it towards the rear in the triangulated section just forward of the swingarm mounts? This seems to be how most do it. Obviously requires a custom bracket and welding.

That motor can handle 25kw peaks
