We look at electric motorcycles in this episode and find out how one owner has managed to ride 8000 miles and only spend £4.50 on fuel.
We also take a closer look at a Royal Enfield Classic 500 that we converted to electric a few years back and compare it to a modern electric superbike, the Zero SRS.

I recently rode around England on my Zero S and I exclusively charged at Tesco's stores. I covered 2,153 miles in 11 days. Did 43 charge stops with the average duration of 50 mins. I consumed 30 cups of tea and 15 lattes during these charging periods mind you. The total cost of fuel = Zero. Nothing. Nil. Nada. Zip. Bugger all. £0.00. Thanks Tesco, although I did spend lots of money in their cafes :D

@rayphot

@@GingerPiston Yes, they are not for everyone or for every use case. But I had a good few weeks off work between jobs and was in no particular hurry. I decided to do it as a challenge, just for the hell of it. I normally use the bike for commuting 8 miles a day and I charge it once a fortnight in my garage. Or take it out for a sunday blast, ride for a couple of hours, plug in to charge whilst having a bacon roll and a coffee somewhere, then back home. Before I bought it I looked at the type of riding I did and realised that I very rarely go more than 150 miles even on a sunday ride with mates. So a quick 20 min stop somewhere is enough to top it up. I'd love a bike that can go 200 miles, charge up in 20 minutes and cost less than £15k, but I figured that I'd be waiting for years before that is achievable. So I bought this and am absolutely loving it.

@@rayphot That's an expensive motorbike to use for short trips, but glad you're enjoying it. Just watched another youtuber (teapotone) do the 4 corners of the UK challenge on the Energica. 4 days Vs 2 on a ICE bike. I haven't ridden an electric motorbike yet as I can't afford to buy one. I love the idea of the speed and carefree use of the Zero but that price is way too much. I saw the Photon on the interweb a couple of years ago I think and being an old(ish) fart; (59), I would like a Royal Enfield but they vibrate too much so the idea of an electric version in the style of the Photon is very appealing. Now guys, if you could make what the Photon is for about £5,000, not only would I like it enough to buy one, you would be competing with the Chinese cheapos that are flooding the net. I didn't see the TV show where this was built, do you have a link to it....??

I have 3 x RGV250's VJ21's all need engine rebuilds which is normal every 6,000 miles. and these days is over £1,000 a time. A brilliant bike but 25mpg and 1 liter of expensive two stroke oil per 3 tanks! Refilling every 80 miles is a chore. although a break every 80 miles is needed to get some feeling back into your hands from the vibration of a V twin spinning at 8,500 to 12,000 rpm. If you are intrested in having a go at one.. the standard bike is a real beast to ride lifting the front when the power valves open and unleashing something like 65 to 70 BHP (when tuned) in a bike weighing under 130 KG wet.. even when cranked over in a bend... which is very frightening! I have been clocked at 125 MPH on private roads of course.. ;)
@alandriver9916
@alandriver9916 2 года назад
you couldn't even do 8,000 on a push bike for £4.50! Oil alone would cost more than that. probably need a few chains, rear cassettes, front chain rings etc, brake pads. £450 easy.

Love PP's Zero, not so sure about the Photon. Puzzles me why it's always 'naked' bikes that get converted, when there's a wealth of fairing clad bikes of all shapes around, even period fairings for older ones. Would cover lots of electrical stuff, no need for a special box.

Amongst the many poor design decisions in the CCS standard is that it has a lower voltage limit of 200V, making rapid-charging smaller batteries on bikes is somewhat nontrivial.

I've done 36,000 miles on my 2014 Zero SR for a total electricity cost of $0. I charge it from solar panels. The bike doesn't have the ability to use public chargers, which otherwise I would've gladly paid to use, as the 50 miles real-world range (vs 87 miles EPA rating) is somewhat limiting - and I have been left stranded before when the battery quit unexpectedly at 13% state of charge!

I wish I'd known that when I bought it - Zero was claiming a CHAdeMO adapter would be available soon, but later dropped the idea when they discovered that most DC charging stations couldn't deliver 100V - and often killed the bike's controller in the process. I'm now trying to make a custom J1772 charger for it.

This reminds me of the running costs of electric cars. Servicing is close to nothing, as you don't need to do regular oil changes. Fuel is almost free, and more a cost of time rather than an upfront expense. When I explain to people that I would be spending maybe $1000-2000 in on road costs a year, including "fuel", servicing, registration, insurance... gas guzzling drivers really struggle to understand those numbers. :-\

Limited range? There is a video on RU-vid of a guy travelling 76 miles to work, at speeds up to 85 mph, and that's the majority of the journey not just a few miles. He used 40% of his battery. If I did that on my old CBR600, it would have used close to half a tank. The Livewire has DC fast charging, so by the time you've had a coffee it's full again. Electric bikes are new technology, ICE has been around over 100 years, EVs are only going to get better.

Hi from the east coast of the U.S, where the only electric cars we see are Tesla's. Just kidding, there's lots of Priuses too. I love your channel and the cottage style of building what you do. Your genuine love of your career definitely shows. Thanks!

Absolutely LOVE both bikes! Living in an urban area, I would love to have an electric bike for short trips local and about town. However...i would need something with storage( an electric bagger?). Electric vehicles are here to stay. Although they will not solve all our power/energy problems, they are a great alternate source of transportation and the technology seems to be improving every day. I own a Harley, and i would love to have an electric bike as another source of happy riding days. Mo bikes=mo better

Ok, ok, ok, but I can’t get use to a hmm… vs a combustion engine sound! EV’s are cool but creating enough power to charge millions of vehicles will take a long time, if possible! The day of a family having multiple cars will be over! Classic vehicle conversions? No longer a classic vehicle, it is a EV conversion, period ! No longer a classic!

To answer your comment on whether the national grid can cope with electric cars you're best to watch this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zSRXVWQLxPY.html With regards to whether a classic car is still a classic car with a modern drive unit replacing the old fossil fuel burner, well for me having driven electric classics for the past 7 years I would say YES it's still a classic car. It's like replacing your old classic homes heating from coal fireplaces to a modern central heating system. It's still an old house, but now it's easier and more enjoyable to live with on day to day basis, and cheaper to run too. Don't knock it till you've tried it. 👍

@@ElectricClassicCars I’m not knocking the electric motor at all. I belonged to an electric car club in 1981 and we converted VW’s, Ford Pintos, MG’s, you name it, as long as they were small! Our motors were mostly military surplus electric motors off of anything they had that was surplus containing a motor! We made our own motor to transmission adapters and put golf cart batteries in them with a home made power controllers or relays to connect the battery power to the motors. Wow, was it fun! Back then electric cars were really frowned on because you didn’t pay any fuel taxes, ha, without buying fuel so the club members were told not to advertise your homemade EV with any placard’s or license plates bragging about being all electric! The only real problem was the EV conversion’s range was only about 50 miles with the deep cycle batteries and it took at least 8 - 10 hours to charged them. Your classic car & motorcycle conversions look really cool, but my comments about calling them classics was mostly aimed at motorcycles because when Harley came out with their first prototype EV Harley, Harley dudes laughed because the big V-Twin was not between their legs! I grew up riding BSA’s, Triumphs, Harleys and Nortons and a motorcycle was 99% the engine so it would be hard for me to look at a converted Triumph Bonneville or BSA to EV and talk about it as a Classic still! Ha! That is just me! The grid comment was just based on how soon the politicians want a 100% EV conversion when the power grids in America are so pathetic now! Love your video!
