The electric roaster started gaining popularity in the 1930's and they are still being manufactured today. For many, the electric roaster served as a second oven, coming in handy during the holidays to cook that big turkey or ham and leave the regular oven for all the other side dishes. More than just roasting a turkey, these versatile appliances also bake, steam, slow cook, warm and can be used as a buffet server. Need to make baked beans for 100 people? Use an electric roaster! Need something to keep plates or dinner rolls warm? Use an electric roaster!
Westinghouse, NESCO, Hamilton Beach, Everhot, General Electric and others are featured here as we stroll through the vintage roaster round-up at Cavalcade!

1949-53 is the one I have now and use still! It has its own wheels and warming cabinet. I can cook a turkey in just a few hours and I use it for turkey and noodles. I’m glad I stumbled upon this channel.

Hi Kevin and Mary Ann! I liked this education about roasters, today. I missed Ralph's smooth voice commenting, but Mary Ann did a great job. I remember seeing roasters in homes when I was growing up, but we never had one. Thank you for clarifying what they were used for and how they worked-things I never knew, Kevin. Keep safe and stay healthy to you all and I am looking forward to the next time we get together! :-)

Before there were motels, families often went to a rented cabin for summer vacations. Lots of these roaster ovens were packed up and taken to these cabins that generally lacked a stove or only had a wood stove. With the cooking dishes, whole meals could be prepared and put in to cook with little or no attention in the afternoon while the family was out having fun and then they could come home to dinner. If a pie or other dessert was prepared ahead of time, it could be slipped into the roaster when the dinner was taken out and it could bake while dinner was eaten. If they had the broiler grid, morning toast could be prepared on the rack under it while bacon and eggs fried on top of it. One morning my mom was making brownies when the bake element on her oven shorted out while preheating. She just plugged our Westinghouse Roaster Oven in and said that her brownies baked just as nicely as in the oven. Our next door neighbors used to live in an apartment and used their Roaster Oven on the screened porch in the summer to keep the cooking heat out of the apartment.

I had to come back to this video and watch it again. Today I found a Westinghouse Roaster identical to the 1954ish one. As soon as I seen it I knew I had to have it. I paid $8 for it. I found your channel a couple of months ago, and it definitely stoked my desire to have vintage kitchen, dinner, and houseware. It’s been something I’ve wanted to do forever, and now I’m definitely getting more into it. Last week I bought a Lincoln Beautyware Chrome Cake Carrier from the same thrift store for $1.

i've used my 18qt nesco roaster for more than 20 years, it has traveled around from apartments to rv parks to houses to workplaces and picnics and potlucks and has been 100% reliable and a pleasure to use. i've made chili for 75 people, roasted turkeys and chickens and hams, baked cakes and pies and pizzas and made huge batches of chex snack mixes in it. it will do everything a regular oven can except broil. cleanup is also much easier than cleaning a conventional oven.

Does anyone remember The Nesco Lady from QVC? About 20 years ago. She could really sell those Nescos and cook all kinds of delicious looking food in them. Thanks for showing us all those roasters and sharing your knowledge.

@@cavalcadeoffood Hi Kevin, Sorry my last comment I addressed the camera man not the doing all the work. LOL. Anyway I have another question. Should I buy a vintage Westinghouse clock/timer for my 1950s roaster? Just concern about its safety. I recently acquired an old Sunbeam Mixer, white with a black handle, of my recent mother-in-laws. It was exactly like my mothers when I was a child. (Early 1950's). It needs repairing. The speed is very, very slow. I live in southern CA and can't find anyone to repair it. Do you know where I can send it to fix it? I like to use everything in my kitchen. crock pots/slow cookers are similar to roasters in that the heating elements are in the sides, but roasters tend to be larger. a roaster can function as a crock pot/slow cooker but a crock pot/slow cooker can't function as a roaster.
