Here's a look at some vintage appliances that could be the grandparent of today's InstantPot and the parent of the ever-popular slow cooker. These are cooker-fryers, an appliance that served double duty for the home cook.
Many of these electric pots had heating elements on the sides and bottom with a thermostatic control that would go up to 400 degrees. This gave the user the option to slow cook at lower temperatures or deep fry at higher temperatures. Included was a metal basket designed for deep frying. Most major retailers (Sears, Montgomery Ward, W.T. Grant) had store-branded versions of this appliance, and some of the major manufacturers like Sunbeam, Dormeyer, Westinghouse, Presto) also made cooker fryers.
In the 70's when the slow cooking fad had taken hold of many American cooks, some manufacturers included a ceramic crock with their cooker fryer so it could used for slow crockery cooking.
Here are a few samples of the cooker fryer collection at Cavalcade.
