Great video. Thanks for taking the time. This is pretty much the perfect RU-vid video. Information, no waffle and crapping on, and clearly explained. Basically all signal, and no noise.
Thanks for the compliment, Nathan. Please consider supporting the channel and subscribe, it will allow me to make more videos. Sadly, RU-vid does not always reward this kind of video.
Thank you! One of my burners started sparking. I raised the top, (after turning off the power), and pushed the receptacle block in and now it doesn't spark. However, I noted electrical tape around it and not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Knowing how the apartment manager hires lame techs, I suspect this is bad. For great techs who may read this, please keep up the good work! You're hard to come by.
Thanks a lot. Appreciate the no-nonsense, clear explanation and the diagram. And just in time to fix my kitchen stove top at home! Absolutely thumbs up.
Thanks! I exchanged our big back burner element with the front one. It was the element. I left the working one on the front. Now I have a big burner to use. Very helpful.
I had just moved into my apartment and the burner wasn't working so I decided to look up a video and this one caught my eye turns out the block needed to be turned around the other way 😂😂😂 it was the front right burner which is my favorite burner to cook on too THANKS SO MUCH 😄😄😄
Best I've seen so far. I watched plenty of videos on this because the 8" element did not always work and the terminals were darkened so there's arcing. I changed the receptacle block (but couldn't open the top to do it no matter how hard I tried). Now it's back to the same thing after working only for a little while.
Great content, liked and subscribed. Your style has an old-school vibe with everything clearly explained but no extra fluff, I really like it. Will definitely check here next time I run into other house problems!
I do my best to respect your time and hope you only have to watch one video to figure out how to do something. Thanks for commenting, liking and subscribing. Welcome to Know How Now.
Thanks, very helpful vid. My stove has a burned out burner. It has been going bad for a while. now it's dead. Your vid helped a great deal. I'll keep in touch and give you an update. Thanks again.
@@Know-How-Now I fixed it! Wahooooooooo. I ordered the part from Amazon and it came today. It was the control switch. $18.99. Much better than a new stove. Thanks again. Now I know what to look for.
@@Know-How-Now Only a small part would have ended up in a land fill. I cut metal into art pieces. If you have time here's what I do with metal trash. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fK5qu9cQ80A.html Later.
Great video! I do have a question though. I have your typical coil electric stove with four burners and believe that a burner is getting too hot even on low setting #1. I don't know how to test this. It just has a dial with numbers so I don't know what the temperature should be for each number or how long does it take to get up to temp. But even on 1 it seems to bring water to a rapid boil quickly.
If it used to work OK, then, I'd try a new control switch, they can stick. If the stove is new to you, then maybe the control switch is bad or someone installed the wrong one.
Thanks so much. We initially thought it was the burner but also saw a spark once when we turned it off since it got too hot even on med. So far I've replaced the burner with a new one and haven't had any problems but we don't go far when cooking now just in case
Thanks for a very clear, concise explanation without any useless rambling. Could you please explain how to replace the control switch. 3 of my 4 coils only heat on high, so from your explanation I understand I need new control switches. Thanks again.
Hi Lindy, sorry it has taken a while to reply. With so many variables and words that could be misconstrued, I don't feel comfortable trying to describe how to change out a control switch using the comments section. Electrical work needs to be done carefully and correctly.
@@Know-How-Now Thanks for replying and for the great assistance you give to people. I meant to show us in another video one day when you have time how to change control switches (not in a comment). Thank you and all the best in all that you do.
Without seeing the schematics to your stove, it's hard to give an accurate diagnosis. The schematics for your stove may be located on the stove someplace. If you have an infinite switch as shown in the video and contacts inside of the switch control the indicator light, then the contacts in the switch may be stuck closed. You could try swapping two of the infinite switches (if they are identical) and see if the problem follows the switch. The other option is to shot gun it and replace the infinite switch.

You might try finding the model number for your stove. It's likely on a tag with the model number, maybe inside the oven door or on the back. There are several places on the web that sell parts. Look up your model number on one of those sites. Most of them will show you a parts diagram. Order the correct part for your stove.

I am guessing that you have watched my video that shows how to replace the receptical block? Yes a hair dryer might work on the shrink tubing. For sure you don't want any bare wire touching any metal part of on the stove when you turn a burner on. You will be arc welding and get a good little boom if that happens. Leave exposed bare wires at your own risk.
Very informative. My problem must be deeper tho. You see, i have power because i have lights but i get no heat from my coil elements or from my oven elements. Is there a high power fuse that could be blown? Where to locate it if so? Thanks
I have a problem with my stove. Would you give my a hint? The two small burns works. Two bigger ones will not turn on unless I turn on one of the small burners. Thanks in advance
It's not possible to give you a good answer with out being there I'd need , make, model, schematics and to be on site. A wild guess is that there are circuit boards in the stove, maybe a problem there.
Excellent tutorial! I have an issue with a burner sliding out of the receptacle box. Is it possible to simply widen out the contacts at the end of the burner so they will fit "snugger" in the receptacle box?
The inside of the receptacles can wear over time. I don't know of any way to widen the contacts. A loose electrical connection can heat up and start a fire. It won't trip a breaker, unless it's one of the new ones that are supposed to detect arcing. The safest thing to do is to replace the receptacle. On most stoves it's not too difficult to replace the receptacle. I have a video that shows how to do it. Click on the channel name and look at the playlists to find it. The videos are organized by topic.
I used a heavy cast iron skillet grill on the bigger coil, although the grilled veggies and steaks were good, the coil stopped working. I'll try with the method you mentioned but any guess on what could have happened? could it be just the coil or coil and the receptor both.
Thanks for this video! I have a question: My stove is a push button (I love the buttons!) from 1963, some burners don't work at all, while others only work on certain settings. Would the blackened and pitted contacts you talked about contribute to the problem of working on certain settings, or would you look first at the switches?
Hi Russell, I kind of remember those push button stoves. If you are good at reading schematics and using a multimeter, you could check the output from the buttons. Somewhere on the stove there is likely a schematic. Maybe on the back. That's where I would start. If you don't have that level of electrical knowledge, then you could try replacing the burners & the sockets. I'm not sure that you will get parts for something of that vintage.
@@Know-How-Now Okay, I'll start there. Yeah, I do honestly wonder about getting the right parts. We'll have to see. Thank you! I appreciate your response.
You might want to look for a wiring diagram. They are often on the back of the stove. There is no way for me to know all of the wiring colors used on different makes & models.
My burner won’t cool down intermittently. We’ve burnt food my turning it down but it does cool down. I’ve changed the control switch and it still does it. Coil is good, receptacle seems okay. Any ideas why?
If the stove doesn't have any circuit boards, it sure sounds like a control switch problem. Was the replacement switch an OEM part? Is is the correct part?
hi i had a disasterous event when my landlord was inspecting an element - we raised the lid and 2 wires from a broken element shorted on the metal frame LOL. we replaced the element and it doesn't turn on but the indicator light is always on? do you think we screwed up the switch?
It sounds like you left the magic smoke out. lol. Wow, that must have been a surprise and a good reason to unplug the stove before lifting an element. I'd say odds are good that you damaged the switch control.

Wow! Thanks! I thought my stove was broken. I have no experience with electric stoves. I thought I was going to have to live with just one working burner. Turns out the rest just weren't plugged in properly!

absolutely fantastic video. thanks! the problem with my stove is all four burners and the oven quit working. the clock still works and the indicator light for the burners lights. I checked the breaker, all is good there. I have no idea what to check now. any ideas?
Could it be in the oven clean mode & locking out the burners? I presume this is a newer stove/oven that has a digital display. Look for a wiring schematic on the back, if you can locate it, look to see if there is a fuse. If it has an electronic control board, it never hurts to try to power down & back up.
I have stove with coil burners and when I use all four of them it is hard to control the heat on mainly the larger burners. It either gets very hot or dies down. it is hard to get medium heat. Anyone know what could be my problem?
