Great that you can do this to old cars, but in the case of the Stag, without that gorgeous V8 exhaust note half the appeal is gone.

My dad would turn in his grave if I did this to the one he bought in 1976 and now sits in my garage to drive. I get the enthusiasm behind EV but the Stag is way over 50% all about the crossplane crank, odd firing order inducing V8 burble.

I drove a lovely stag for years and it never let me down. When I bought it a specialist garage would only look after it if I let them rebuild the engine and it was serviced regularly. After the initial expense no trouble and it was always driven sensibly. It only started to be a problem when I rarely used it and that lesson learned I sold it on to an enthusiast who would use it. Yes the sound of the exhaust was great but I still approve what they are doing here because it is getting more difficult to get the right petrol and before long it will be very limited as to where, when and how often you will be allowed or able to drive them. Visually the stag is a beautiful motor and for me seeing them in use is worthwhile even without the exhaust. I notice they won't say how much and that's the problem. I suspect it is somewhere around £20k.

Few questions: How is the power steering powered? What have you done about the heater?
@ElectrogenicREV
@ElectrogenicREV 3 года назад
It is the original power steering, powered by an electric pump. It uses the original heating system, we have simply added an immersion heater and a little tank to provide the heat.

How fast will it charge? That looks like AC only, so not suitable for longer distance touring which is what I’m looking for in a comfortable convertible. Could it be CCS? How big is the battery?
@ElectrogenicREV
@ElectrogenicREV 3 года назад
It is AC charging only, because it is a low voltage system which makes it a much cheaper conversion. It has 13kW of on-board charge capacity arranged in parallel so that it can charge in 3 phases at up to 50kW AC charging. This means on a 50kW charger for example it can charge the car in about 2 to 2.5 hours.

The good thing about having this car in electric is that it won’t have those engine problems like in the original petrol car.
@-Ace-of-Spades-
@-Ace-of-Spades- Год назад
There's no excuse for any of those engine problems today that plagued the original. They were problems for those times where there's simple solutions for all of them these days. Just one example of that is how waterless coolant solves much of the corrosion that used to lead to overheating, but the Stag had to wait until 1993 for man to invent that. So, jokingly of course, you could say that Stags were well ahead of their time.
@djtaylorutube

@acstagger 2 года назад
@@ElectrogenicREV I need at least 3 times that range for a meaningful touring capability within Australia. Big country, and some towns are 250+kms apart, with nothing in between except scrub and the odd dusty sheep. And in the case of the Stag, losing that engine note? Techological solution required to maintain that special aural experience.
@djtaylorutube
@djtaylorutube Год назад
@@acstagger Well you're not going to get the times that with a Stag anyway! I get around 18mpg with an automatic and 15 gallon fuel tank. Assume not running that to empty gives a usable of more like 250 miles.

I guess by this stage, society has been "weaned onto" electric cars. The average person now drives a new car that is quiet, smooth, etc. I have one, and (getting old and lazy) when I want to be comfortable/am in the mood for it, I drive it. Most are auto's, and with multiple gears with almost imperceptible changes. So much so, that a couple of people I know have CVT transmissions.............. and weren't aware of it until I commented. The "more refined" steps have isolated the driver more and more from the driving experience. For some a good thing; for others.................... So going from the above to electric is the final transition. Most people won't really notice the change from a "sanitised/civilised/quiet/"it just does it" normal config car to an electric. But the reason I drive my Stag (had it for 28 years, done 330,000 kms in it) is because the interactive experience. The rev matching and choosing correct gear for a corner, the sound, the whole experience. When the sun is out (all the time here in Western Australia); my Stag gets used all the time. It is far easier to park (visibility/low waistline) than my newer car; so easier to take to the shops/go shopping. To me this elec conv is a waste of a "driving experience/interaction" car. The sort of person who WANTS an elec car wants "new stuff". Why would they want "elec in an old thing?" Give them a new cabrio with all the stuff the expect/demand. Which is why companies already make "new elec cars." So - I can't really see the point. "Oh, but it is for a person who likes the "old school" but wants elec." THAT kind of person will have a new elec car - AND an original "old school" car.

I had two stags... 1972 mk 1+. Auto and a manual od. The best lookers of all times, but usual 1970s BL rust traps and unfinished engine design. Dreadful rear axle. But all forgiven because of the looks and sound. It must be worth worth building new replicas today that can fix all the many gotchas, and with no compromise tailored fitting for batteries and motors. Then add integral sound with choice of soundtrack from classic V8 to V16, Merlin V12 and choice of jet turbines. Why not make Tesla owners insanely jealous? It would shame the ghastly mainstream cooking EV designs that lack style and flair, and still cost £3Ok+ and are loaded with sinister spyware. I'm totally in. I shall be calling.

Dear Sir. I simply must protest. The Triumph Stag was the bench mark of world wide motoring for reliability, power, grace and British Engineering of the finest quality. My wife and I enjoyed many a trip over the 100,000 miles we did not cover in ours. At speeds of up to 50Mph. Stopping only occasionally for water, head gasket replacement and other normal repairs. Allied to the remarkably rust proof bodywork and peculiar very offset control pedals. No Sir. The Triumph Stag was an Engineering wonder of its time. The simply genius stroke of enlightenment placing the water pump at the highest possible position in the engine made a mockery of Fords gravity fed one. I could go on …. But I will not.

Jay Burgess - They had their quirks like all engines. But the reason for the bad rep was that back then, BL couldn't have put together an IKEA kit. An OHC alloy V8 thrown together and then given to dealers used to pushrod cast iron head engines. THAT is what went wrong. If you took a new Honda back to 1970 (and filled it's block with casting sand that BL left in the Stag engines) and threw THAT together/gave it to "old car" dealers - it would have been WORSE. Or given an Aston Martin to same assemblers/dealers. When it had problems, journo's of the time ran off a litany of "wrong facts" as to why there were problems. I guess that was easier than saying "BL couldn't put together a prefab BBQ". Those 'wrong facts" are resurrected every few years/cut/pasted. People LOVE a wrong legend. Once said, cannot be refuted. But give a Rolex to a boilermaker to service - yeah; when it doesn't go, MUST be the watches fault. I have had mine since 1993. In Australia (Perth, where it's hot, but have driven it coast to coast 7 times back in the 90's Melbourne to Perth return, 7,000 kms return trip for Xmas leave). I have done 330,000 kms in it. If I can make mine reliable/run all day in the middle of nowhere at 130 kmh dawn til dusk in heat up to 48 degrees C (peak, top of Eyre Peninsular in summer) but normally 40 deg all day; HOW can the "engineering be so bad????" They have their problems - I fixed them. NONE of the problems the "legends say." But the up side of the "bad rep"? That "recycled wrong facts" thing makes them cheap for me for parts and the like. So if people want to "stay wrong/recycle lies" = works for me. I can afford a V8 touring convertible that I have LOVED, still take shopping on the hottest days here................ and will have until the day I die. Thank you Triumph. :-)
