This might look like a classic red Ferrari 308 GTS but it has one little secret - its 100% electric.
While some will see this conversion of such a classic car as controversial, it's now a faster, lighter and more practical car which gets far more usage than its combustion engine predecessor. This classic Ferrari was lovingly converted by Richard Morgan and the team at Electric Classic Cars and Robert was warned to be careful when he took it for a drive as its a 'bit lively!'. This high performance car now has an impressive 500 horsepower and is both exhilarating and terrifying to drive (see Robert's face for proof). So looking to the future, could converting to electric be the solution to preserving these incredible classic cars?

You lose the excellent Ferrari engine sound, plus the driving experience of shifting gears. If you want to modernize a classic Ferrari, build in a modern Ferrari V8 engine. Still not the same, but a lot better than turning it into a vacuum cleaner.

I think with all things considered... the owner is completely right! This is a beautiful car but not an ultra-rare collectible. When I heard he had done 8 miles in a year, it made me so sad... It's tiring seeing Astra, c class, 3 series, Corsa, Yaris... but imagine seeing more Ferraris, old rally cars, Masseratis... OH IT'S EXCITING! This is a really good episode, one's preconceptions change when you hear the owner out. The owner also seems to have been influenced by Fully Charged so without this show it is not easy to say if this project would have come about. I could have done with a double length show with the owner telling us a bit more about himself. What will be interesting is if this particular car with its on screen presence in this episode and having been converted by one of the pioneers has more value in a decade to come than the petrol burning variants.

When engines die and the car is still otherwise serviceable, this is a potentially great option! As stated here, there will be people after engines, so extracting those parts to be a doner for another car isn't a bad thing. You actually end up with MORE of these classics still working and on the road rather than rotting in a barn.
@cekpi7
@cekpi7 3 года назад
People should realize more that older cars aren't that comfy to drive, so replacing things like suspension or engine isn't "killing" those cars. Every time i look at someone restoring old car and they do some modifications, everybody in comments says they destroyed that car and it should have original parts. There are people that prefer having actually usable car, not showpiece, after all, they bought it and they can do what they want with it. Conversion like this are great for people that still want to use original parts since they will have a lot more options now.
@Leo99929
@Leo99929 3 года назад
I totally agree! Some times using original fit parts is potentially dangerous. You wouldn't use asbestos brake pads now and you wouldn't say it was sacrilege to use a modern alternative instead. Also things like The oil used. Tech has gotten better and while I appreciate the importance of maintaining at least one example of pivotal or iconic technology for posterity, keeping them all stock is unnecessary. It's analogous to where tradition may hold back progress in other situations. We shouldn't do things how they've been done before, purely for that reason.

My editor at a magazine spotted him and demanded I go and talk to him in case he had something interesting to say. Didn't have a clue what to ask him about, so started a conversation about cars instead! Even back then he seemed incredibly passionate about tech, cars and idea of electric vehicles - is fantastic to see that passion alive and well with the Fully Charged Show 15 years on.

On an unrelated note, observe how natural it is to have two blokes separated by the topic of discussion. No masks required, they're more than two meters apart. Why so far? Because they're talking about a car. Where is the car? Right between them. And we have view perspectives face on to each with an expanse of Rosso Corsa to move the conversation along. This is motoring reporting in the Age of Covid, and it's quite elegantly well done. To your videographers, Robert, I lift my glass.

I used to have a Ferrari 328 and the engine was the soul of the car. These cars do so few miles I don't see the point in converting them to electric power. I bought my car at 22000 miles when it was 13 years old and sold it six years later at 30000 miles. Driving it was a very physical experience. (no power steering made parking a real work out and the clutch was pretty heavy too) but it handled well and sounded fantastic. I don't understand why they gave the conversion so much power. I find where I live I'm lucky to get much over 60 mph these days. I like EVs but in this case I don't think I would have done this. I had a Zoe for three years but have bought an SLK because I found the Zoe a bit too dull (next car will be an EV if they ever make an electric sports car that is sensibly priced). This is still a rich person's endeavour

I don't know that I'll ever be in a position to have my Ferrari electrified, especially as I probably won't be in a position to buy a Ferrari but I can see a huge market over the next 10-50 years for classic cars being electrified. The worst thing about them is the mechanicals regardless of whether you like ICE or not that's simply a fact.

Sense of occasion and involvement of original spec totally lost with an EV conversion. Even a 200bhp Ferrari V8 is more exciting to me than a 500bhp electric motor. At least you get the noise, and the engagement. Faster does not equal better. Plus, it’s £60k! That’s probably a few lifetimes of maintenance and fuel costs on a 308. Most classic car owners will be maintaining their cars themselves for £100’s a year.

@@Baseless_ if it were a statue that was subject to be moved around very often, I don't see why would be bad to make it easier to move, as long as the visible shell is the same, and the material strength is still preserved. The new core could even improve the strength as reinforcement if using smart choices of composites. I really don't understand the obsession of keeping old stuff as is, just because it is old. I understand that some things have sentimental value, but this car had an expensive service and maintenance history. I think replacing drivetrain and suspension is a smart upgrade, and it is not like those parts were thrown away, they were put on the maket for used spare parts, to enthusiasts wanting to keep their car with OEM parts.
