It's good to see real safety advocacy! I just added a fullface helmet to my gear. It's just too easy to go over 25mph anymore. If you are going faster than the human body can move with just its own two feet, you should be gearing up. Plus someone in my town just ate a curb on a one wheel and basically destroyed his face, lower jaw and teeth. Gear up!

100% agree with everything you say here. I came from a Onewheel and previously wore the typical half helmet when I transitioned to the EUC world. Going about 25 I hit some unexpected small pea gravel and ate it -hard-. Thank goodness I saved my face but literally everything else was jacked up... elbows, knees, ass, shins and legs. Only took once bro. My kid is now riding my old V11 (also coming from the Onewheel) and I make him gear up. He gives me flak every time I insist on him gearing up. His reasoning is that he's never taken a hard fall on either the OW or the EUC so he thinks he's bad ass. I keep telling him it only takes once, and you never know how bad that one time will be. I could go on and on, but please keep hammering this message home, Chooch!

Don’t have an EUC yet but am researching and planning for everything I will need, including safety gear. Super helpful video, and has given me a lot to look into in terms of protective equipment. Side note - I’m coming to this video after seeing your more recent vid of crashing on the Begode. Holy hell - can’t believe you walked away from that one. That is proof right there of the importance and effectiveness of the gear you were wearing. Thanks for letting us learn from your experience. Stay safe.

Thank you so much for this video Chooch. Our riding community NEED to hear this. I see way too many riders THINKING they're looking COOL riding without the appropriate gear. It's not about "YOUR" riding skillz, it's about protecting yourself when a mishap occurs- because, TRUST ME, if you ride often a mishap will eventually happen.

Two years later and this video still hits...Thanks Chooch!:) I've watched it a few times now as I've gotten started on the EUC train these past few months. As intense as that experience must have been seeing the fragility of the human brain, neck, etc., what an invaluable asset it is to the EUC community for a go-getter like you to share this message...Can't thank you enough! Of course, most of us are deeply considering the ridiculous aspects of safety gear, like how we look in all of this seemingly overkill gear while learning, yet having someone as hardcore as you on the trails/streets stressing how critical it is to dive into the safety gear really helps people commit to it with the intensity that's necessary. I appreciate that, man! No disrespect to Mike Leahy's skills/accomplishments, but he's doing a huge disservice to the EUC community in terms of taking safety seriously. I'm 40 and still struggle with not wanting to appear weaksauce wearing what might come across as overkill gear, let alone folks in their 20s, so someone like you sending this message is a tremendous asset to the community. Keep up the great work and, hopefully, one day I'll be able to tackle these crazy trails like you do...without killing myself;).

Finally, a RU-vidr in the PEV space that explains how a helmet should fit. The TSG/Predator helmets simply don’t have the proper fit/padding to keep the shell in place. For the price of those helmets you can pick up a quality moto x helmet, or even a AGV K6 motorcycle helmet…lol If your helmet shifts when you move your head side to side, or the cheek pads are so loose that you don’t have “chipmunk cheeks”, then it’s a roll of the dice if they will protect in a fall.

For real brother. After 2 years of riding I finally got into my first real wreck. Doing aboot 30 mph, I was doing some moggles. I was sway'n to. My hips were throwing my RS back and forth like a flying pendulum. And BAMM!! I slip on a small patch of wet leaves and started sliding all kaddy. Slid for about 10ft before I went down on the asphalt. Then I started bouncing and sliding for about 20ft as the wheel kept bouncing off my back and legs. It took 3 weeks for me to walk without a cain or crutches. And I was wearing full armour. Tore up all the soft tissue around my right knee. Swole up 5 times the size of my other knee. I think I need some Leatts.

I still recommend two things for gear while learning. One is that I would still recommend wrist guards, because even going real slow you might lose your balance and land on your wrist, and wrist injuries are the absolute worst... second is not really a safety thing but I'd say maybe wear long socks or pants, because I scraped the hell out of my legs and ankles learning on a V12.
@MutantDoctor

wrist guards have saved me like 3/4 broken wrists. one unlucky time I landed wrong and sprained my thumb. the weird part about landing on your wrists is that your triceps get sore the next day

I mean if the person uses a straight arm to land... gonna happen. people need to practice falls way more instead of thinking it's a escooter and just sending it.

@@dictionplacement5467 how is your falling technique in any way related to whether you wear safety gear? are you saying wearing safety gear means you suddenly start riding headfirst into walls whereas learning to roll like a ninja out of every crash means you can pretty much guarantee escaping without a scratch?

You may think you are OK without the gear if you keep the speed below 10mph because you can run at least that fast and you can just step off and stop in a few steps. Three times in the last three months my helmet has hit the ground with my head in it. I was going only about 5 mph across a field when the wheel dropped into rodent workings. Twice I stepped off and lost my balance and It wasn't a really big deal. The third time, the wheel powered out of the hole and put me on my back. Instantly, I got a Chiropractic back adjustment while looking at the sky with the back of my helmet picking up dirt. Always wear a helmet! Guys in wheel chairs can still earn a living, guys with brain injuries are institutionalized. You can't predict how it will affect you, its just like having a stroke.

I thought I was safe on my one E+ as well, until I didnt hear the overload beeps and cutout at top speed. Not to mention I did the Firmware hack to get 15.7 mph lol. What did I learn? Don't mod your wheel and ride with gear at all times. Now I'm on a V11 with more gear than when I ride my motorcycle.

Wristguards are the absolute mininum if you want to even stand on an EUC! Helmet obviously the moment you leave your driveway, but doesn't matter if you're just doing loops on your parking lot on walking speeds, your wrists are the weakest link. Sure, you can shield your head, tuck you chin etc. But you know what's 100% gonna take the impact? Your wrists. I slipped on some black ice a month ago, I was wearing motocycle gloves and slapped my hand on the ground and rolled over it. No wristguards and guess what: Sprained wrist and it still hurts to grip stuff. I can't fix the backpack strap on my left side with my left hand because it hurts my wrist to pull on it. Wristwraps would've kept my wrist in place + really dissapated the impact more than the gloves. My helmet didn't even scrape the ground, but my wrist paid the price.

great video, man. just getting my first EUC (S22) and I'm lucky to have a good amount of gear from motocrossing before. One thing to keep in mind with motocross style helmets is that they can break your collarbone if you go down without a chest protector (or whatever padding) protecting you. Not a big deal if you're not going crazy but it takes very little pressure to snap a collarbone. Something to keep in mind

I recently was riding my s18 and I was on my way home from doing laundry with a 40lb rucksack on my back and for some reason a had a sensor failure and the wheel just stopped at around 15mph I went face first into the asphalt and had no time to put my hands out. Thankfully I was wearing a helmet with a face shield that was removable and I often ride without it but this time I was. But being it was not a structural part of the helmet it crushed right into my face. I thought my nose was broken but, thankfully, it wasnt, also I am not sure if I will lose my front teeth but they are totally loose right now and I have a feeling they will fall out eventually...and that was wearing a helmet with a face shield. But if I had not been wearing my helmet that day, I'm certain that I would have been out cold on the bike path and in need if reconstructive surgery on my face. I have been riding for 2 years and hadn't crashed in several months I'm confident in my skills but this failure was beyond my control. And could have happened at any time. Had it happened 20 sec earlier I would have been crossing a major intersection with 6 lanes of traffic. I have switched helmets to a full face dirtbike helmet and now i wear it EVERY time I ride, and wrist guards are a must because if you do have time to get your hands out in front of you, your wrists will take the full impact of your body weight plus how ever much inertia you have. As far as additional protection it's up to you but to stay out of hospitals- a full face helmet and wrist guards are the bare minimum, period!

Just wanted to say that for better protection, you go for ECE helmets instead of DOT, since they're more resistant. For those V13 type wheels I'd even go for a SNELL certified one.

I've been riding for 2 weeks and already got into my first crash closing in on 30mph on the MTen4.. after 2 weeks I was able to ride up to 20mph solid and wanted to push my boundaries.. but speeds passed 25mph seemed to be a completely different ball game.. can't remember if it was a cutout from overpowering the motor or the petals getting to low due to the acceleration that they got scooped up by the road, but could of leaned back up a little to catch myself?.. but I will say at the second I hit 27mph my face was just magically getting a foot closer to the ground by the second.. and within the final second before it was too late I twisted my body a little to land on my shoulder.. luckily for my head and shoulder they were protected (helmet and padded jacket).. can't say the same for my knees and hands.. every detail of what it's like to crash is described in this video is so true and I suppose nostalgic for me haha..

For the knees I highly recommend trying the leatt Z-frames. They are a little more than the basic dual axis, but they fit a way better. I've never looked back.

Just one thing I want to say, you do NOT want to buy a helmet that -only- has DOT rating. A manufacturer can put a DOT sticker on their helmets without having them independently treated by DOT, along with the fact that the DOT standard is not protective enough even if it were independently lab-tested. You want an ECE 22.06 or FIM certified helmet. And Snell is more for highway speeds and higher.

I have found that falling off at a slow speed, or even stationary almost, hurts more than falling off at speed. Crashes at high speed are different, but not better or worse than low speed. I came off (overleaned) my Nikola plus at 40mph and had no injuries because of my gear... I have also fallen off at slow speed and hurt myself more. I always wear full gear any time I ride. I have given a couple of small demos in a car park just to show someone how they work not wearing my gear, but I am super careful. Always wear your gear, it only takes one fall at hardly any speed, you can fall like a sack of potatoes, hurt yourself and not be able to ride for some time, or not at all. Take Chooch's advice... wear your gear

There;s a video on Kelly Chameleon's channel where a group do an 80 mile run , they're all skilled riders but one guy has a sudden fault that throws him off at about 30 mph or so. His wheel runs over him, tears his clothing big time, but he's wearing good protection underneath so even though it looks nasty, he's fine, even able to finished the ride and the return trip. No gear, that would ave been a different story.

there's been plenty of race drivers/riders that've crashed at 100mph+, with full gear, and walk away unscathed... then jump on a bicycle or something with no gear, crash at 20mph and get killed... I couldn't fathom why anyone would ride a high speed euc on pavement with no gear, I've wiped out on a Jet Ski at 60-70mph and even water feels like a brick wall at that speed...

Chooch, thanks for all you do on EUC's. I've rode a Meepo AWD PRO for a couple years and I'm ready to step up to an EUC. All your info has really preped me. I'm thinking about getting a Begode ET MAX as my first. I'm a full send kind of guy and I don't want to have to upgrade once I get up to par. I'm 6'2" and 230lbs. I've surfed, skateboarded, snowboarded and wake boarded. I just turned 55 and I'm all about the full send still....lol. one video I watched the guy said the ET MAX was not a beginner EUC. Whoa at the ending... I wasn't expecting to hear about an autopsy experience in an EUC gear video. The thing about human body is, it's really hard to predict the outcome of an accident or injury. Sometimes people survive things that sound impossible to survive, at other times people can die or suffer permanent injuries from what looked like a minor incident. When I watch people crash on EUCs at high speed, I'm amazed how much of a difference good gear can make. Personally, I don't have a need to ride fast, but I still regularly update my gear, partly because even at low speeds commuting accidents can happen, partly because I like offroad, and there nasty things can happen at low speeds too, and there's always this thought in the back of my head that gear, no matter how expensive, is gonna always be cheaper than surgery. Though I've learned that inexpensive gear can take you far as well. Price not always equals safety, so it's a good thing sometimes you can find really good budget friendly gear too.

@32:09 as you are fond of jumping, i cant see how you can ride with high neck shoes. You will loose the entire force from your ankle knuckle jumping (if you have anything like old kuji pads). Sure if you ride totally locked up toes and heel you can still jump, but when you fall locked up like that, no guard in the world will save you from broken bones.

Actually I would recommend for People to look for helmets rated 22.06 ECE or 22.05 ECE. (The first one being an updated european standard from 2020 I believe and the second from the year 2000) But you might ask yourself why not DOT then? Because DOT is so outdated is has been tested for racing in 1950s.

Price for a lazyrollin jacket in canada: 450$ (considering they're showing cad and not usd. If its usd, you're f*cked. Just went up to 600$) For that price i get the skeletor armor with a motorcycle airbag vest.(which is cheaper then a rollin jacket) Gearing up would cost almost the same has a wheel. Top body armor: 350 to 1k Lower body: 150 pants, 100 to 200 for knee pads. 300 for proper shoes like he shown. Thats almost 2k worth of gear. Now that I've done the math, im reconsidering buying a wheel. Might just go for ebike. (Im not gonna dress like a terminator for biking in the city, so that just saved 1.5k worth of gear.)

What is the difference between level 1 & 2 protection? Or at what point should you upgrade to level 2? I plan on purchasing the KS 16x or new S16 euc and want the proper protective gear. Thx

How did you get those red bull patches? And did you stitch them on yourself?

Good vid, full face is great cause of goggles too, I used to commute on a bike without goggles and I don't know how I did it. Even going 15 km/h on my wheel with my goggles lifted up my eyes start to water here in the winter so much that I can't look down and see where my feet are on the pedals. Only semi related, but do you have a recommendation for pads for the s18? I know you don't have one anymore but its hard to find them because of the body design. Keep up the good work!

I purposely work on keeping my bone density up and that might be because I’m 75 but I ride a wheel myself and I’ve fallen a number of times and I’m always amazed I haven’t shattered yet. I do wear wrist guards every time I get on but I use elbow guards and kneepads sometimes oh helmet always. Thanks for this video I’m stepping up to a V 11 so I’m adding up some speed and I want to get better equipment so thanks.

Do you think the level 2 pads from Lazyrolling Jackets are protective enough for trail riding ? Like if i hit my shoulder on a rock at 25mph would it be protected ?

Hello Senior Blasted Freak. I am 46 and I had been riding EUCs for about 2 ½ years now. "Graduating from onewheel" and i have raced with chooch and ridin with him.. and he is legit.. definitely an inspiration.I have 3 EUCs now. And in my opinion for a beginners wheel would be a tesla, either a T2 or T3. I have had and riden both. And its a wonderful well balance all around wheel to start. Enough power to be considered an advanced wheel, but light and nimble enough to learn on road or off. Plus its pretty durable. Plus a really good price. Then I say move up to an RS. Still one of the best wheels ever made. And if you get it through Ewheels, they will give you a choice of the batteries to put in it. They put Samsung 2750's in both of my wheels. Plus you can get 5% off using either my code "www.ewheels.com/Captain" or chooches code as well. Or even our codes at Revrides. Safe riding freak. And keep living... The Captain and the Wheel has spoken...😉

@@thecaptainandthewheel8506i'm happy for suggestions i'll see which one I like, which one I can get in our country and how it will handle considering I'm about 220lbs with all the safety gear I use when riding my Vsett10... I'd really like to learn how to ride EUC... I hope I succeed and enjoy riding it as much as I enjoy riding my scooter 🍀Stay healthy and many safe miles friend 🍀🍀🍀

Wèll since your a bigger boy I would say go straight for the RS, or maybe the T4 with suspension. Either way, stay safe and let us know what you end up buy. Maybe throw us some footage.

I’d look for a more reliable rating than DOT. The standards aren’t modernized and the regulation is lacking.

Lazyrolling also has a lot of sales, if you're not particular about colors and stuff - I got the jacket on sale for 149 USD because the batch had turned out *too* reflective. So I bought two. For 50 bucks more than one jacket, I got two. Check their sales.
