My friend is an electrician and asked me for a special knife for peel off electric cables, and instead of having a special scissor to cut all the different sizes he wanted a curve blade that could cut all sizes.

So am I and this knife is bad for our work. Nicking risk of the outer conductor strands or solid cord is great. Too much mass and you can't get the feedback of the edge coming in contact with the copper. The idea is to cut part way through the insulation and then a quick bend to snap the insulation and slip it off. You want to keep the mass as low as possible while keeping the durability as great as possible and a lasting edge. Balance at the first rivet point aids greatly in the feedback feel of part way cut through the insulation. This knife would be very good for MCM sized work but not the usual circuiting of residential and commercial office space. Electrical code is that you use light mass stripper with a controlled depth of cut. You will notice the insulation down slice shave insulation error move. You slip the insulation off, not a down cut pull slice. ---from apprentice to retired from the trade as an inspector

@@MrBonners Guess a guy would need to strip wire carefully with it then. Like you would with any other knife.
@MrBonners
@MrBonners 4 года назад
@@arcflashed 'carefully' is a subjective determination. It is not defined in any code engineering, QA, fire, insurance standards. There are mechanical reasons why they make machined hand operated strippers. Electrical fires are usually caused by a scored conductor reducing the gauge at a small spot and getting hot and eventually fatigue out and short out, then fire. Where a lot of flex in a cable is required the flexing will also snap conductors over time at the score mark. You trust a 1st year apprentice is going to be skilled enough to know what the right amount of 'carefully' they should apply?
@arcflashed
@arcflashed 4 года назад
@@MrBonners You don't think I already know all that? For one thing most of the industrial companies oil companies etc required a penciled insulation on conductors over # 1 AWG. nicking any of the copper is of course a huge violation and unacceptable. When I started the trade in the late 70's the old timers used their Klein hook bill knife etc for stripping large conductors. Since that time there have been very nice stripping tools available which do make stripping large conductors safer and easier. I would have mostly used this style of blade for stripping multi conductor tray cable jacket etc.

@@Gabrulo_knifemaking I love the work and knife is beautiful, but as an electrician i would make the end blade about half shorter - it will make many operations easier. I don't know how to describe it properly... the length of the blade should be 3 to 4 cm. So you can take a cable in your hand, put it agains a thumb and slice the isolation along the cable with a tip. The curved part is perfect, just make the straight part shorter and it will be perfect ☺

The only issue I see is using that crescent shaped spot for a finger notch. It looks like a finger notch and the location is perfect for a finger notch but it being sharpened does not make a good finger notch. If it were mine I would take the grinder to that notch and make it flat there.

@@austinjutte4855 Health and Safety. Very strict, especially on government, power or such projects. Companies want zero accidents, even experienced engineers can cut themselves. We were constantly reminded to use only approved cable stripping tools and rightly so as one slip with a home made knife can slice through insulation on multicored control cables, not a risk worth taking if you're building a nuclear power station! Maybe acceptable if you're putting an extra light in your garage....
