Do you expect these hardware upgrades and station changes to rehabilitate Electrify America's reputation?

New hardware ought to be great out of the box as long as it’s compatible with the plethora of CCS cars. That would be my expectation anyway. Will these new stations stand the test of time better than the 3/4 year old hardware deployed now! Wow I sure would hope this new hardware will be more reliable. Then again it’ll undoubtedly get used a lot more in 2022, 2023 and so on than did the the original EA hardware back in 2018, 2019 and so on. So EA and Tritium hopefully made this new stuff an order of magnitude better, otherwise our perception of it will quickly degrade if that makes sense.
@ouch1011
@ouch1011 Год назад
I’m not expecting anything, but I’m hoping it will be better. What I’m really hoping is that EA has learned how to work with their suppliers to make *serviceable* hardware. Everything breaks eventually, that’s a given. Hopefully this stuff breaks less, but when it does break, hopefully they have a stock of replacement parts available locally, abundant staff trained and ready to replace it, and hardware that was actually designed with repairability in mind. The “stock of parts” and “repairable hardware” seem to be their biggest failures with the old stuff (at least according to EA).

@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
@@pokerguvna978 Yeah, Saugus has to be somewhere on a list of old sites... it's by far the worst in our area. I think it's used less than the likes of Assembly Row and Burlington Mall, but they still need to get all the metro Boston sites figured out. Another EA location for the North Shore is slated for the mall up there in Peabody, but I doubt we'll see that until next year now.

If you ever have the opportunity, I’d be curious to know whether charging a Bolt and Ioniq 5 simultaneously at the power sharing unit will throttle the Ioniq. If well designed, I would think both cars would still get their maximum
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
Thanks, I was pondering how to make that happen as the Lightning left the stall! The only interference, other than scheduling, is that winter temperatures will interfere with the max charge rate on both cars, so we might not be able to easily separate EV limitations from what the charger is allowing. Will see what we can do though, if we get more days in the 60s.

Excellent video. Thank you! I live in southern NH and drive to Waterville, Maine each week. I use the EA chargers at Walmart 1788 - Scarborough, ME. Occasionally, one of the four stations will be unavailable, but I always get a charge when I stop. Your video has given me more information which I plan to track during future charge sessions. I hope that future charging stations will be balanced charging across the entire site. This would be a game changer for all EV users. Imagine you don't need to know what DCFC speed you "should" be picking (350/150/50kW) that depends on your cars max charging rate and its current state of charge and the current battery temperature. This in combination with plug and charge would make EV charging process WAY simpler than filling up with gas (picking fuel grade and paying with cc). Why balanced across the entire site rather than pairs of stations? Imagine two low state of charge Ioniq 5 plugging in on the 2 balanced 350 kW units on the left (no-one using the stations on the right). The Ioniq 5 could not charge at max rate because they have to share 350 but the site still has capacity since the power on the the right stations is not being used. Then as the 2 Ioniq 5 battery's are filling up and they should theoretically move to available 150 kW stations so other empty fast charging EVs could use the fast 350kW units. If it was balanced across the entire site and all stations have the same max charging rate of 350 then you just plugin and the site will give you the max available considering your demand and the sites capacity - done.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
That's a great call. Although I would still encourage new EV owners to learn their car's capabilities and basic terminology, any steps that take work away from the user and have it handled by the hardware are desirable.

Steve, great testing. It seems EA is becoming more reliable with the New units. I'm glad the EV crowd got on EA to show they were lacking in reliableaity. New owners will have a better user experience. EA and auto manufacturers still needs get plug and charge working for all vehicles.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
Thanks, David. I think the challenge now will be keeping these stations fresh and making sure that none of the old "problem locations" take too long to be upgraded. But new owners will also need to bear some responsibility for learning their vehicles and the best way to activate a charge. Every new tech takes a bit of adjustment and it makes sense to dig into the details when that new tech is our mode of transportation!

5:56 I understand what EA was trying to accomplish, but I have to say that, after visiting some of the newer EVgo sites, I prefer their approach. EA is offering 350 kW with a two dispenser footprint, but the Delta EVgo chargers allow for 350 kW with only a single dispenser.

I tend to agree. I think "balanced" is too vague and it's not that prominently labeled here either. The approach should work out in a high power/low power scenario, like an I5 and a Kona Electric, but the EVgo approach delineates things more clearly, regardless of the EV model.

@ouch1011
@ouch1011 Год назад
The charging speed on the Ioniq5 (for cold temperatures) is based off the battery minimum temperature data PID, not the average temperature. It changes based off of 5 deg C intervals. You can see that in your video when the charging speed jumped up when the battery minimum hit 68f when (which is 20c) Roughly speaking at 15c or less, you’ll get around 75kw. Between 15-20c, you’ll get around 120kw, 20-25c you’ll get around 190kw, and 25+c you’ll get max speed. The kw numbers are rough numbers because the charging rating is based off of amperage not power, so the power will change depending on the battery voltage. I think it is roughly 100A, 175A, 250A and 300A but not sure. You won’t see those numbers exactly on Torque when it is running battery heating (or cooling, except when at 300A) because the power draw of the heating or cooling will push it higher. Once the battery gets hot and it starts to “rapid gate” the battery max PID is the determining factor. The battery average temperature isn’t considered for charging as far as I know. I’m hoping to see these new stations here in Oregon soon. Many of the EA stations along my typical travel path are are old and using some of the very early chargers and the reliability of them over the past 6 months has been absolutely abysmal, sometimes with entire sites being broken. Given that EA is the only network in Oregon doing greater than 62.5kw chargers (aside from Tesla), it’s really important that they get the new stuff here and fast.
@plugandplayEV
@plugandplayEV Год назад
Brilliant info, thanks for that. Average seemed like the best to display prominently for vids but it makes total sense that the BMS would use min temp for cold weather management and max for hot weather. I'll adjust the Torque display for winter and try to log as many sessions as we can to get a baseline for comparison if/when the pre-conditioning update arrives.

In terms of finding 350kW sites, you can use Plugshare and go to the "Minimum Power Level" setting in the filters menu. Set that to 200kW and the network to Electrify America and you'll find all EA sites capable of up to 350kW. If you're looking specifically for these newer fourth generation hardware sites, it's not quite that easy. Thanks Tom. It's good, but I can also see how others might complain that only 3/4 or 2/4 were working properly if they couldn't activate one and another was lower power than they'd hoped. So we start to see how the reports get mixed and why some have a very different view of Electrify America: same station, same morning, same EV model, quite different takeaways! Yes, the preconditioning is activated within certain temperature parameters, when a DC fast charging destination is set in the Hyundai native navigation (so won't work with Android Auto/Apple Carplay).

CCS is the charging connector type used by this EV. It stands for Combined Charging System. There are two other connector types used for fast charging in North America: Tesla's connector which is also called NACS/J3400, and CHAdeMO, which is now used on so few models that we don't typically cover it much any more. The industry in North America is gradually moving to J3400/NACS (North American Charging System), but both that and CCS will be around for many years to come.

But EA has almost 800 stations on the map and a good number of them are new(ish). The next one down the Masspike, Auburn, MA, for example, has eight Signet units and great reliability. So there's an example of one I wouldn't want to replace, just for the sake of it. Even if we say that half/400 should be upgraded, they've only had the hardware and technicians to upgrade 15-20 sites in the past four months.
