Thanks for sharing this video, 25 minutes for 350KW Hyper speed charging is not pretty good as we are hearing lot of times in this video, I asked marketing manger of KIA in exhibition she told me we can use top of the speed as station could give us the energy, but with your nice clip it seems this Kia Ev9 battery is same the other jappans car , I tried Audi GT etron it can grab 270kw such as almost 2 times more faster , people expect more than 130kw speed in 2024 , again thanks for your clip
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 10 дней назад
25 min for any vehicle to charge this much is pretty good. As for peak speeds, yeah 215 kW (idk where you got 130 from) isn't the best but it's decent. The charge curve is good though. Not many vehicles charge at 350 kW. GM trucks are the only ones I an think of (Silverado EV, Sierra EV, Hummer EV).

Did you precondition the battery before you pulled up to the charger? If so, for how long? A warm battery can make a big difference in charging speed
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 4 месяца назад
No it was already warm. But yes that's definitely important.
@volcalstone
@volcalstone 4 месяца назад
You can't precondition the battery below 20% which is a shame. The charging rate differs at every single station even the one next to it. I've been at a 350kW station that was only providing 60kW max and then I moved to the one next to it and it was giving me around 200kW max instead. The max that I've seen is 233kW after precondition for around 15 mins and it was around 65°F. Not sure what battery temp was on arrival but it was still preconditioning prior to charging tho.

@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 3 месяца назад
350 kW is achieved with higher voltage vehicles. The vehicles themselves need to be able to accept a high amperage as well though. The EV9 has higher voltage (500-600ish volts) but doesn't accept a high amperage. The new Silverado EV can do 350 kW though using it's 800v architecture.

When you press the button on the CCS connector to disconnect from the vehicle, power is immediately turned off.
@gelu88
@gelu88 4 месяца назад
The button on the plug does not physically disconnect the current, as the plug is locked by a pin on the car side. Pressing the button does the same thing as pressing the button on the screen. It sends a signal to the car to unlock, and only then can you pull it out.
@TechnicallyJeff

It doesn't physically disconnect the power, correct. But like you said, doing so disconnects the power.

I don’t understand setting a DC charge limit. Even if it does slow down, either you’re at the car and able to unplug, or you’re still in the bathroom or whatever and might as well get whatever juice you can before you leave, even if it’s slower. Only exception is if you’re at a per-minute charger somewhere.
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 4 месяца назад
Yeah I get that. I think the biggest thing for me is with the EV route planner. If you have a DC charge limit set then the route planner will go based off of only charging to whatever percent you have set.

Question: Does it cost more per KW to charge on a 350 KW charger? I normally pay 36 cents per KW on the road at EA and I charge my Kia Niro EV at home for about 11 to 13 cents per KW with a 64KW battery and get a range of 200 miles at 90% charge. In this video, the total cost of 97.3 KW delivered was $54.32 (at 56 cents per KW) so that means a person could buy 15.4 gallons of gas at $3.50 per gallon for the same $54.32. He added 275 miles range (he finished with 285 and started with 10) so if 275 miles are divided by 15.4 gallons of gas, to beat this for the dollar, you just need a vehicle that gets at least 17.8 MPG. My old 2008 Highlander hybrid AWD with 210,000 miles still gets 22.2 MPG and “charges” in 4 minutes at a gas pump. My 2010 Prius gets 43 MPG even if you beat the daylights out of it and has a range of 440 miles (even while punching it at every stop sign). My point is: unless we as a society can get charging costs “on the road” under control, it will kill an otherwise great invention. The average person will not pay $75,000 for a car that gets the cost equivalent of 17.8 MPG.
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 3 месяца назад
Math sounds about right. Keep in mind there are different plans that make it cost less per kWh. And the vast majority of charging also happens at home where it's much cheaper. And a lot of vehicles come with a certain amount of public charging included with the purchase of the vehicle. Kia EVs come with 1,000 kWh for example. Others come with 2 or 3 years unlimited.
@DanielBrownOre
@DanielBrownOre 3 месяца назад
I'm pretty sure just a quick glance at the EA app shows it's a flat $.56/kwh no matter what the charging speeds are...
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 3 месяца назад
Yeah it is the same rate in most states no matter the speed. But if you pay extra you can join their plan that gives lower rates.

Do you think Kia shoul;d change to LFP batteries? This would allow charging from 0% to 100% but lose some energy density.

Not a bad charging rate at all, but not Kia's/Hyundai's best either. If you noticed, it never got all that close to 800 volts. For a much larger battery than the EV6 or Ioniq 6, it needs to reach that 240kW at minimum. However, the most disappointing thing is its 400v charging which I hear is as bad, or worse, than the EV6. For a vehicle 2 years younger, you'd thought they would have reengineered something better than using it's rear motor inverter (basically regening) on 400v chargers. 97kW or less is very bad for such a large battery. Especial bad considering all the unreliable 800v chargers out there right now, and their vastly lower numbers in all.
@TechnicallyJeff
@TechnicallyJeff 4 месяца назад
Yeah that's something I mentioned in the video. The EV9 runs at a much lower voltage than the EV6 or other E-GMP vehicles. Very interesting. I haven't tested 400v charging, but it should be capable of faster speeds than the EV6 since it has a higher power rear motor.
@JohnRoss1
@JohnRoss1 4 месяца назад
@@TechnicallyJeff 400 volt charging is only an issue because of future access to Superchargers. Still likely better than charging at a 50 kW DCFC. 😂 I wonder if charging an 800 volt car is an issue in Europe where they have access to some superchargers?
@TechnicallyJeff

Charging time has always been the only real downside for EVs. That said, 10% - 80% in 24 minutes isn't bad. That's roughly 150-200 miles in 15-20 minutes. That's solid. And ONLY something experienced during road trips. The other 98% of the time for most people it's charged at home while you sleep which is much more convenient than gas stations.
