Electroforming - Rectifier/Power Supply Schedule

This is my personal electroforming procedure for plating a piece in copper using a 3 Amp TekPower rectifier. I am not an expert, this is just what works for me.
I put this together for a group of electroforming artists that may be curious about this specific procedure, so if it seems I've left a lot out, that's why. If it's well received, I'll consider doing actual "How-to" videos and tutorials with a step-by-step guide to the different aspects of electroforming.
This is my first video, so I apologize if I'm unclear anywhere, feel free to ask questions in the comments and I'll respond when I can.
I sell my electroformed work at venusarcanum.etsy.com

Cora, your video has helped me more than you will ever know.. thank you again.

Thank you for actually explaining this and the correlation between Amps and Volts. I'm starting out and don't know how high to turn which knob and why. Most instructions say "if it's salmon colored, your amps are too high!" But it doesn't explain where your volts should be when your amps are at whatever level and I just found this expamle very refreshing in that aspect. So thank you!

Amanda Wilson I agree with you! This video explained things that others neglect to simplify, so thank you for this video. I more more at ease to begin this journey after seeing your video Cora.

Nice, you have a plating video as well! Farm stuff too, I so haven't done any farm stuff videos.... seems like with food... I don't share that so much. Anyways... I just received my 0-30V 0-10A CV CV SMPS that I plan to use for electroplating and also for my lab test equipment repair projects and I guess for powering other repair or build projects. I'm mainly looking to replate old parts from tools (sewing machines at this time) and plate 3D printed parts. I was also wanting to plate 3D prints for antennas and other electronics parts designs. Thanks for sharing!

Very informative, especially when pointing out ways to get a shiny result. Can you tell us how you prepare your plating solution? Concentrations or ounces per pint or whatever? Or perhaps it is just a fully saturated solution?

OMG, THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video! I'm gonna subscribe and see what else I can learn from you. I actually found you searching for how to switch my two rectifiers (one is a tekpower, the other an eventek) from C.V. to C.C., but I didn't see that in this video unfortunately, but I'm going to keep searching. Do you happen to offer any individual help by chance? I'm not asking for you to help for free, but the way you're teaching in this video has actually been even more helpful than the "Electroform This!" group I joined on Facebook, which is a really amazing group, but sometimes people get too frustrated when newbies ask too many questions! :-( I've actually been electroforming for about 2 years, but have NEVER been able to dial in the power. It never takes me less than a week to coat a piece, but recently I have been having issues with pieces coating way too thick slowly. Which is driving me nuts because members in the group are the ones that told me to turn my power up more. I REALLY, REALLY need to figure out my power problem. Even though I've been electroforming a couple years now, I feel like I have absolutely no idea when it comes to the power. 😢 If you happen to know of any other resources I can access, I'd really appreciate it if you'd share with the community. Thanks again!

My rectifier has been doing this weird thing and I can’t find any explanation for it or how to fix it anywhere. I set everything up, both my amps are on a number I like. Then randomly my voltage will go super high. I don’t touch the knobs or mess with them at all, it just happens. I can’t get it to stop. What does this mean? How should I fix it?

If I'm not mistaken in the first part of the video Cora shows what happens when she disconnected the black(-) lead, she got exactly the same negative voltage reading. Perhaps your black lead is bad.

If you get a power supply with C.V C.C (Constant voltage - Constant Current) than you can set your volt and the current will slowly climb on its own to keep up with the Volt that you set.

Bran Strickland No, I'm afraid not *:( It sounds like a faulty machine
@seksualusis
@seksualusis 7 лет назад
Blowing fuse means too much of a current going trough the whole loop of device and its load. If load part wood be too conductive, like in a short, this might be the reason for device to protect himself with the mean, fuse is designed as. Another reason for the high current would be too high a voltage applicated for a given load.

Cora thank you for your very enlightening explaination of the on-process relationship between voltage and amperage. May I ask you if you think a simple saturated copper sulphate in tap water solution would be good enough for a beginner, or shall I mix in sulphuric acid and brightener as in the ready-mixed commercial solutions? I like to try and keep the chemicals to a bare minimum for environmental concerns mainly, that's why I ask you.. best regards, and thank you for your video!
