In this video, we will be taking a closer look at the Waterworks range of Electrofusion and Long Spigot fittings, which together create a reliable piping system. Electrofusion is a method of joining polyethylene piping components together by means of an electrical current that fuses the material at the joint interface. This method is commonly applied in higher-pressure systems, including the conveyance of water, gaseous fuels, compressed air, certain chemical solutions, and slurries. When done correctly, it ensures the formation of secure, leak-free, and dependable joints.
Let’s look at the specifications of this product.
- The range of fittings includes straight and reducing couplers, 90°¬ and 45° elbows, both equal and reducing tees, tapping and branch saddles, end caps, stub flanges, BSP Female and male threaded adaptors as well as Spigot fittings. The BSP Male and Female Adaptors are available with both PE and brass thread options.
- The fittings are all made from polyethylene which is an extremely durable material that has great chemical resistant properties, is strong, relatively lightweight, and easy to install.
- The range of fittings is available in metric OD sizes 20mm OD up to 630mm OD, depending on the fitting, and are made to suit metric High-Density-Polyethylene (HDPE) and Medium-Density-Polyethylene (MDPE) pipe which is manufactured to AS/NZS 4130.
- Electrofusion fittings have a coil on the inside of the fitting connecting both welding terminals, which when energized, heats up and melts the Polyethylene surface, fusing the pipe and fitting together. It is a relatively quick and efficient process that forms a strong and durable joint when cooled.
- Each fitting has a barcode on the side which when scanned will set the heating and cooling times on the welder and these times will vary depending on the size of the fitting. Most welders will also have functionality to allow for manual entry of welding and cooling times.
- Most standard Electrofusion fittings have either 4.0mm or 4.7mm welding terminal pins, and the Electrofusion welder should have both options through means of adaptors to cover both sizes. It is important to ensure the terminals match the fitting correctly for an uninterrupted weld process.
- Electrofusion fittings are supplied in an individual bag, to help maintain cleanliness, however, the inside surface should be cleaned using an approved cleaning wipe prior to welding. Likewise, the surface to be welded of spigot fittings must be scraped as part of the welding process to expose virgin material and then cleaned appropriately to remove any grease.
- The pressure rating will be shown as a PN number on the side of the fitting, and commonly fittings are rated to PN16, however can be used when welding pipes with various pressure ratings or wall thicknesses, referred to as the SDR (standard dimensional ratio).
- When installing, it is important to ensure the PN and SDR ratings of the pipe and fittings are compatible.
