005 - Electron Configuration
In this video Paul Andersen explains how to write out the electron configuration for atoms on the periodic table. More importantly he shows you why electrons arrange themselves in shells, subshells and orbitals by using Coulomb's law and studying the first ionization energies of different atoms.
ANSWERS:
Cl - [Ne] 3s^2 3p^5
Ag - [Kr] 4d^10 5s^1 - Did you get [Kr] 5s^2 4d^9? There are a few exceptions to this law. Most of them are found in the f-block metals and they are not of much chemical significance.

I couldn't understand quantum numbers in high school for the life of me. I actually dropped out of the chemistry course because of it. The way it is explained here it's actually pretty simple. I'm 66 and retired and I'm trying to convince myself that can understand and learn chemistry, it's sort of an unresolved thing with me. We never had tutorials like this back in the day. You only had one teacher and if that teacher was not up to snuff then you were beat. Thanks a million Paul!

I'm studying this in college and I just want to say thank you and I love you. May be overdramatic but I don't care. You explain it all so easily and the graphics are extremely well produced. The ability to pause and give my brain a few seconds to analyse and understand, rewind and reply also helps but kudos and keep it up the amazing content.

I looked deeper into it and it was explained that it takes less energy to keep two shells half full then keeping one filled and the other less then half full. That makes sense but that means you can't just blindly follow the arrows in your diagram and figure out any element. YOU NEED TO PUT THAT IN YOUR VIDEO, OTHERWISE PEOPLE WILL BE MAKING MISTAKES WITHOUT KNOWING IT.

Number of reasons: (possibly) You are not actually paying attention to the video. Meaning that your sub-conscience is not eager to actually learn, and without noticing your attention is not truly with the video. Or, that simply watching is not suited to your learning style. That being said, as you're watching pick up a pen and a paper; write whatever you think is important that is being said during the video and then rewatch.

so is 5s^2 4d^9 wrong ? why did you put 5s^1 4d^10 im still lost because I thought S can hold 2 electrons so wouldn't it make sense to use it to its max then go on to d
@lizbethnisperos1650
@lizbethnisperos1650 4 года назад
because copper is an exception, exceptions pull one from the s and add it to the d. There's a few exceptions directly beneath each other.

The simple concept of shielding. In this video, it took me about thirty seconds to fully grasp an understanding of what it was. My teacher, unfortunately, seemed to think we needed an entire week filled with worksheets to understand this concept. Overcomplicated concepts seem to be his specialty.

Only one electron occupies the 5s orbital because electrons hate being in spin pairs so the 5d orbital gains another electron instead. The same phenomenon is shown in copper ([Ar]4s1 3d5) and chromium ([Ar]4s1 3d10)

Well, it's been 8 months since you wrote this so, it's too late. But, to enlighten you about what people consider or don't consider, it doesn't matter if no one considered something a sin, if the Bible states something as a sin, god does not change. HE is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. I hope you got through your test OK. Yea, I also have a tendency of procrastinating until the last minute.

Yup.
@garandtyson6806
@garandtyson6806 9 лет назад
That's close, but elements that are near a half complete orbital or near a full orbital in a p, d, or f orbital will promote one from the nearest s orbital to half way complete or completely complete an orbital. So Chlorine, for example, would actually be 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1 3p6.
