Excellent video. As others said, so many other instructional videos are overly complex and make electronic music production seem like a daunting prospect for complete beginners. Your advice is friendly and easy to understand. You've given me the confidence now to make a start on this, thank you my friend!

You're a legend 🙌 ... the way you're able to explain these complex concepts and tools into terms most people can understand is a testament to your intelligence. I'm sure you're inspiring loads of people who would otherwise be dissuaded to pursue this hobby, by the daunting complexity of music production tools in general, and the plethora of so called beginner "how to" videos on youtube. Thank you!

I appreciate how you go through everything with detail and not a rushed pace. Some of those other tutorials are so quick, I'm like "Wait, wait, wait. Hold on!" Also great how you gave reasons why you preferred some gear over others instead of just naming a bunch of gear. Thanks!!

Hello from Boston. I've been saying for years I'm going to produce my own music that's reminiscent of the '90s in the early 2000s that everyone seems to prefer that is never played in the clubs around here anymore. Thanks so much for the straightforward video it just popped up on Google search.. very well done step by step thank you brother I appreciate it so much ! Michael D

Just wanna say fantastic video. ive not produced music in over 20 years and am just getting back in to it but the landscape of software, controllers and additional equipment is hard to navigate and choose whats right for me. Your video took all that jumble mess of info and laid it out straight and understandable witha clear picture of what i need. Thank you for your time and effort its much appreciated.

Great to hear that this was helpful! In an untreated room speakers are nowhere near as reliable as headphones so that’s the best way to go 🤙🏼 You’re welcome, let me know if you have any other questions!
@rafsanrahi2469
@rafsanrahi2469 2 года назад
@@TheAudioJourney Different speakers also have different sonic characters so it is very unreliable in an untreated room. It’s good for checking levels, panning, stereo depth and image but the reverberation and delay is not to be relied upon and does affect the final mix in an untreated room. Headphones are the way to go. Good quality studio grade ones.

Thanks a lot for your videos John! I would pretty much appreciate your opinion about which of the latest MacBook Pro's I should go for :) So the main use will be music production (ableton). I would like to be able to use the laptop at least for 5 years and be able to use if needed equipment such as Maschine (Native Instruments), Bass station 2 (Novation), Launchpad or launchkey (Novation) or even Ableton Push 2. Should I go for MBC: 13in - 32GB ram i7 (4 core) 2020 or 16In - 16GB ram - i9 (8 core) 2019 They both have similar price. Or should I better consider 16in - 16GB ram - i7 (6 core) 2019 - cheaper compared to the other 2 models mentioned before. Would any of these have issues in long term with the cooling system? Someone mentioned to me that i7 would be a safer option at 16in compared to i9 as previous 15in Mac's with i9 could have issues after 3 years due to their cooling system... Thanks in advance for your time! ☺

@@TheAudioJourney As a matter of fact I do. It's been a question I've been struggling to put into proper phrasing but I'll try my best to clarify. Haha. Obviously there are huge differences when it comes to learning to use a DAW and using analogue equipment, but because I personally want to learn how to properly use and get to know a drum sampler --like lets say a MPC standalone or a beginner friendly Korg Volca Sampler -- AND learn how to use a DAW, are there some similarities between the two where if I learn how to use a DAW first I would have a better handling on using a sampler? Rest assured, they are two completely different things, but I've been curious if or not some of the major points a person learns on a DAW can make learning to use a sampler easier(vice versa). Or are the two completely different worlds where you'd have to learn how to use a sampler in a whole different way and apart from a DAW? There's terminology and features in samplers that make it difficult to understand until you actually start fiddling with the device and let your auditory senses guide. Even so, I'd like to get a general or full understanding of what I'm doing rather than feel that I'm pressing shit just because. I'd really like to have best of both worlds. At times using something more tangible. Besides, my eyes could only stare for so long ._. LOL. I hope I'm making sense, if not please let me know and I'll perhaps shoot you an email that's more coherent. : )

1) Get a DAW that has everything you need for your style of music so you don't have to look for sample packs 2) Learn how to use at least one synthesizer that comes with the DAW so you don't have to look for samle packs. 3 )If you don't follow the first 2 you are going to spend half of your life scrolling troughs sample packs trying to find something that matches your music. 4) Scrolling trough sample packs suck. Imagine you are looking for some sound and you look trough 600 sounds and you still can't find the right sound when all you have to do is Imagine the sound and than go to your synth and make the sound. What's easier? Learn how to press few buttons or spend half of your life browsing trough samples and presets?

I play piano, so I already have studio monitors, a sub, and a mixer/usb interface. I have the Yamaha HS8’s, so you still recommend headphones? Also, I have a Kawai MP11SE, is this good enough of a midi controller, or should I invest in a different midi controller?

No harm in having headphones as you will have another reference for the audio. If your Kawai can control vsts then there is no point in wasting money on a controller.

Hey John! I've picked up the Launchkey Mini MK3, connected it to my Macbook which has allowed me access to the Ableton Live Lite software software download and am up and running. I've been writing some midi in for my drums, using 909 and my mouse to write the midi instructions for the kick, clap, rim, snare, etc. Are you going to be making some videos on how to start using the Launchkey Mini for writing in bass, melodies, strings, etc? Would be really useful!

Hey Chris - check out the videos that you can get to by clicking on the link in the ‘USB’ device that shows up when your Launchkey is connected to your computer, that will take you to the ‘Easy Start’ tool and go down the ‘New Music Maker’ pathway, there’s a tutorial on doing everything you just described.

Oh man, I would NEVER recommend M50x's to anyone, use AKG 361's instead and use KPH40's as a reference. This is coming from someone in the audiophile community who has also spent $7000+ on audio gear. KPH40's could be your last headphone you get If you wanted and I never would've said that a year ago. AKG 361's for reference studio monitoring(just starting out) then Neuman NDH20's for more intermediate to expert producers who will take advantage of the headphones and KPH40's for the shear amount of detail and enjoyment equivalent to endgame gear though you could just use them as a reference for end game gear and not need to upgrade your studio monitors.
