For safety on the highway (I know, not a CS problem), I'd have pushed the same-direction traffic together, and kept the opposing traffic far apart and not had the through-traffic do a swerve at the split or merge. And I'd leave out the formal french garden landscaping where drivers need unobstructed sight lines.
@johnringwald955
@johnringwald955 Год назад
If you were willing to spend on one more overpass per side, add a single seperate entrance lane outside the exiting two lane passing under the loop, then merge with the right turn entrance before merging back in at the four lane. That avoids the swerving and speed change under the main overpass.

Ah its one of my least favourite interchanges :3 Random fact: Cloverleaf and trumpet interchanges are very rare in the UK due to the issues of weaving (in cloverleaf), and potential turn speeds (on the loops of trumpets and inside cloverleafs). Some of them have been removed and turn into other styles (like roundabouts) because of accidents from cars going off the road, entering it too fast
@YUMBL
@YUMBL Год назад
I much prefer it to a bypass roundabout. I’ve never seen weaving in a single trumpet.
@KidarWolf
@KidarWolf Год назад
Yeah, my neck of the woods recently had an A/M highway interchange reprofiled to get rid of the cloverleaf because the increased amount of traffic was making it more hazardous due to a very short weave between two of the leaves. It is much safer now, and with a higher through-flow of traffic per hour than it had been. More changes are upcoming on the same A highway to improve access to a lower hierarchy A highway not far from the reprofiled junction. Frankly, the higher hierarchy A in question needs to be upgraded to turn it into an M at this point, the volume of traffic, particularly when port traffic from one end of it happens to arrive at the interchanges at the same time as rush hour is too high for the typical volume of traffic on an A road.
@nyeti7759
@nyeti7759 Год назад
@@YUMBL I understand the other reason they're so rare here in the UK is the land take. Nearly anywhere in Britain populous enough to justify a full cloverleaf, land is prohibitively expensive 😅
@philipr10

@@nyeti7759 The UK also has really strict rules on weaving lengths. If you tried to build a cloverleaf in the UK nowadays you'd probably need to put traffic lights on it or a give way line, which would defeat the whole purpose! The weaving is definitely the #1 issue preventing them.
@OntarioTrafficMan
@OntarioTrafficMan Год назад
Ontario has eliminated nearly all of its cloverleaf interchanges due to the safety issues. Usually they turn them into partial cloverleaves or clover-stacks. I think all of the ones on Provincial highways are now gone, but there are a couple left on municipal highways.
@teambellavsteamalice
@teambellavsteamalice Год назад
It's a bit strange to see this after every other interchange. Although most have traffic lights that seems a bit old-fashioned, if it's higher throughput, safer and cheaper it makes the cloverleaf just obsolete.I think a partial cloverleaf and SPUI are very sophisticated. I wonder if two asymmetric service interchanges, one focused on traffic from the highway and one to the highway is a nice idea? Both could connect to a "ring"-artery that surrounds a city, kinda like one huge roundabout. The inside could be highly focused on walkability and public transport.

Forcing the weave at 18:15 means the non-highway traffic can't do a U-turn since they'd need to loop twice. You could just force the left lane's highway on/off ramp to weave, but let the right lane choose to weave or continue to the next leaf. :)
@lucasgonzales4260
@lucasgonzales4260 Год назад
True, but ideally U-turns should never happen anyway. If they're happening regularly in CS, it means you've probably messed up your traffic management somewhere that forced traffic to go on the interchange unnecessarily.

You’re right. I’ll allow them to stay in the leaves in the future
@duskmoon181
@duskmoon181 Год назад
The problem with the cloverleaf is, if there's huge amounts of traffic, the ramp that's letting traffic swing around and enter the highway is placed before the off ramp. So traffic needing to get off said freeway, and traffic entering said freeway collide with one when they change lanes. Even if you have mods, there are way better designs than the cloverleaf. Great vid tho
@lucasgonzales4260
@lucasgonzales4260 Год назад
Yeah, thats the weave he was talking about. Though he also has a video where he detailed an alternate design of the cloverleaf that eliminated the weave.
@mrxmry3264
@mrxmry3264 Год назад
the main problem with a cloverleaf is the weaving. the solution to that problem is to switch the lanes using a bridge, like in the cloverleaf at frankfurt airport in germany where the A3 and A5 meet. on google maps it is quite obvious that the lanes switch sides before merging. there is no weaving unless someone misses his exit or wants to go back the way they came. i built such a cloverleaf on the junction test map, and even when it is totally clogged up, once the restriction is removed, it recovers within minutes. the bog standard vanilla cloverleaf (no lane mathematics, no lane connectors), on the other hand, does not recover

It's amusing that you went straight to the better version of the cloverleaf, when in reality, most cloverleafs don't have a separated weave for the highway, to save on cost. Even some reasonably busy interchanges work just fine with the most basic cloverleaf (though in C:S weaving is much less smooth, due to node restrictions).

@drakedbz
@drakedbz Год назад
To clarify, I grew up in Illinois, south of Chicago. Most of the service interchanges nearby are standard cloverleafs with no separated weave. They are extremely common as it reduces the bridge length needed to accommodate the separated lanes. Sure, it's not the safest thing ever, but despite reasonably busy rush hours, it has been able to handle the traffic okay, without excessive amounts of problems. In locations where there is the extra room, and the traffic to demand more capability, separated weaves, parclo's, etc are often the solution. All that said, basic cloverleafs are not even the worst kind of interchange in Chicago, there are plenty of standard diamonds, even in the areas closer to downtown where you'd expect more traffic. Chicago is known for its traffic for a reason. I wasn't trying to criticize the choice in the video, I definitely agree it's a safer and better interchange. I just found it interesting you didn't start with the most basic version.

Thinking about the weave on the overpass... Could you use traffic manager to have the first node allow for entrance ramp > overpass traffic ONLY to merge from the right lane to the center lane. All vehicles would then be travelling in the left most and center lanes between nodes. The second node would allow for overpass > exit ramp traffic to merge center to exit (right) lane? Left to its own devices, the a.i. seems to like to get vehicles into their destination lane as early as possible so may avoid a pile up at the first node. Edits for clarity

I noticed that some new maps that Paradox Interactive release in their DLCs they're switching to more realistic and beautiful intersections, because the modders and people make the maps are really talented, see you look the old maps that the Devs himself do, they like to use the funky wonky intersections that look so bad, the highways not making so much sense, just spreading all over the map, the mountains looking weird, sea to beach, the typical old maps that are not really good, inserted in vanilla maps, with poorly job, now with the last map packs, they are hiring good players to make good maps, and seeing your intersections with these marking tools work, I wished these maps had that aspect integrated in the maps, more beautiful and realistic, just like the one you recreated from another's person map, since the markings are from mods, all that could look bad at vanilla, and when I see people that never played CS before, they really don't look like interested in the game, because the vanilla maps are so bad looking, Paradox Interactive should change that, make more beautiful maps, with gorgeous roads network, rails, and possibly have the roads looking more cool, unfortunately this is a issue to be fixed in a new city builder that I don't know if it's going to happen, I'm 26 years old, I have been waiting for so long man, the new city builder just like Cities Skylines doesn't never come out, there's no companies interested on that, when there's a new city builder it cannot compete, low quality game with a small team of devs trying to survive, and Paradox Interactive is not giving hints about a new Cities Skylines game with better engine to modern days, I feel like they don't want to, because they can't do that, and is waiting for someone to buy the rights of this game and it's so expensive so nobody is even trying, and my fear is that if it happens, a bad company like EA can get their hands on this game and literally destroy it like Sim City... The more time pass, I get more older, Paradox Interactive is not doing the sequel, I'm losing my faith, because they are the only to be able to pull that off, there's Transport Fever 2 devs, they can do a decent City Builder like Cities Skylines, but I think they only want to focus in transport stuff, and my biggest fear is to happen the same that happens to FIFA games, they keep doing the same game every year and the values keep rising like paying for the same product from the last year, my fear is that the people involved in Paradox Interactive or Colossal Order will ruin it trying to do it small and "The Sims" like, decrease scale, and increase map, and not go to realistic and down the earth style like a bunch of CS RU-vidrs like, but I noticed the change of quality when modders and people that do packs are getting more involved in these DLc, they are letting players do their ideas for next update, modders making things more realistic and beautiful and stay away from cartoon and out of scale, I hope more modders get involved, bring realism to Cities Skylines and changing the perspective of the Developers to make it more realistic the way only mods can make it happen.

How come it goes to four lanes before the exit? The exit ramp could be one lane that splits into two lanes, this doesn't break lane math as it is OK to increase a lane (like three to four on the highway) so the one lane exit ramp can split into the two separate one lane ramps without interruption or conflict. The two lane exit ramp is to short to handle any queuing so making it one inhibits nothing. Also, thanks for another great interchange video, I follow these religiously as without these I kind of suck at building interchanges.

The traffic logic at 18m in when you're talking about the weave isn't funky. It's the preceding lane math that's incorrect. The outermost lane on a highway is the through lane. You can add passing lanes to the left and exit/merge lanes to the right, but you should never-ever-ever-ever make the outermost through lane into an exit/merge lane. This forces through traffic to switch lanes unnecessarily which causes problems of its own. As a professional traveler who travels 10's of thousands of miles every year across the US this is my #1 pet peeve. It's also my #1 pet peeve in City Skylines because it increases node traffic unnecessarily and thus eats up extra processing power. Not to mention the bottle neck lane switching can cause. Doing correct lane math also negates the need for a lot of the lane forcing via Traffic Manager which again saves processing power and makes intersections flow faster.
