How I FIXED the Cloverleaf Interchange in Cities Skylines (Removing the Weave)
➤The worst part of the cloverleaf interchange is the weave. Vehicles have to merge against one another twice just to turn left. This decreases capacity and may cause collisions and traffic backups. When we remove the weave we're left with a fully free flowing two level interchange!

😂😂For anyone with OCD like me, try the create connection mode in network multitool. Haven't tried building this intersection yet but I bet it could sort that issue out.

In Springfield, MO we "upgraded" our HWY 65 & HWY 60 cloverleaf on the south east side of town a decade or so back to a four-level stack that maintains the weave on the SB-EB, WB-SB section. Makes no sense. Something like this would have been much more elegant, removed the need for imminent domain, and would have probably cost less due to a lack of flyovers that people continuously crash & fall to their dooms off of (at least once every two or three years). We also grade separated a branch line right next to this interchange that went out of service three years later due to the city finding that wind power bought from KA was cheaper than Coal bought from WY. Good job lads, great planning. MODOT is at least doing better with the Glenstone & HWY 60 intersection, (immediately followed that monstrosity via the westbound lanes) by removing something that was somehow more dangerous than a weave, the "double on-ramp" & replacing this noob-tier double on ramp (one on the west for SB-EB traffic that circles around & meets with the highway under the bridge & one for NB-EB traffic that merges onto the highway like 300 yards later. 0 lane mathematics. Absolute nightmare at evening rush hour) with the runaround on-ramp & a two lane roundabout. Seeing how hicks occasionally still go the wrong way on each of our three decade old diverging diamonds, this will be fun to observe, but it is at least well designed.

@@inyobill Yeah, but to be fair, traffic heading WB-SB is very small, so I see why made the decision to keep it. Missouri is constitutionally bound to keep a balanced budget after all. Still, this interchange is ingenious & I love it, want to see more irl.

There are multiple cloverleafs near me and they all have short traffic weave sections... this would be so much less stressful to drive through! Also it looks really nice, well done!

The one thing I see that a standard cloverleaf does that this doesn't: going back the way you came. Standard cloverleaf, you can do two loops and go from northbound to westbound to southbound. This format doesn't let you do that as is. You go northbound to westbound, and then you leave the intersection. Other than that, great design.

We definitely miss the traditional cloverleaf at the junction of I-70 and I-75 just south of Vandalia, Ohio. You now have to go one or two exits beyond the junction in order to reverse your direction on either highway.

If you can go back the way you came, that means you have the weave because traffic can exit before the other traffic merges back on. And besides, most people wouldn't use that anyway so it wouldn't make sense to include.

I've been watching this Playlist with the idea In the back of my head "how can we fix the cloverleaf to eliminate the weave, and yet still not require a traffic light, roundabout, or a fourth level?" And by Jove you have done it. I hope some highway engineers see this. I would love to see this in real life. The previous double trumpet came close, but the cross highway ends up offset. You'd have to curve the ends of the highway to bring them back in line. This is a more elegant solution, if potentially more expensive. I'll add that it's got to be possible to put all four of the diagonals at ground level, even if that means stacking the highways on a third level.

This is beautiful. My only problem is that there is no way to do a U-turn. I know that the vehicles in Cities Skylines never make mistakes and will never find themselves missing an exit, so it's not really a problem in the game. But in real life, human error is real and sometimes people need a way to turn around.

no weave, and no turning back. lol I love it! ** note that you could technically do laps on a cloverleaf but not with this one, so you have to choose the intended behavior when deciding on this vs the original ** ...but this is a cool solution if you don't want people turning around

I did that when I drove for Uber if it was the fastest way to turn around and get to my pickup location. Though a couple riders cancelled when they saw my shenanigans.

My DUDE!!!! this is magnificent! I implemented this in a problem area of my city. It took my traffic from 46% up to 67%. I have not seen back ups in this location since. Amazing job on this build.

The only benefit that I miss from traditional cloverleaf is the ability to make u-turns, in almost every interesection. On my cities I usually solve this with a "hanged horseshoe" u-turn, right after the intersection. Also, for this amazing cloverleaf, I have a suggestion: "The 88 Cloverleaf" or "The Eighties"

nice vid. very clearly explained. ONE thing missing. - the ability to go back the other way. Here's how you do it: Where one of the four loops is joining the other highway UNDER the overpass, create a lane on the right, before the highway merge, that runs parallel to the highway and connects to the other loop which goes back up and over. -this is not a weave. Where one of the four loops is joining the other highway using the OVERPASS, create an ELEVATED lane on the right, before the highway merge, that runs parallel to the highway and connects to the other elevated loop which goes down and under. yes, it will make it possible to infinitely drive over the loops. but with lane control you can prevent that. this new lane stays on the outer side of any loop - and gets pushed into the next highway.

New Or-le-an-s. The intersection you reference is N Causeway Blvd and Interstate 10. And it is a big improvement over the normal Cloverleaf that was there before the modification.

I like your solution! Your footprint is smaller than mine, and it looks much prettier, too… to make a no-weave cloverleaf, what I’ve done in the past is have my left turns merge from the left instead of looping around and merging from the right. Describing this in text is difficult… instead of passing under/over the road I will eventually merge with and circling around and merging from the right side, my merge lanes rise up between the two straight-thru lanes and merge from the left side. To pull this off, the four straight-thru lanes need to diverge, creating a fairly large box in the middle, and giving room for the merge lanes in the center. Thus the huge footprint. Another variation I tried was putting the clover leaves inside the straight-thru lanes. It was ugly as heck and super finicky to build… but I also wasn’t using sufficient mods. I could probably do a better job now, but there are also better/easier solutions. Not that there is any advantage to it, but when you insist (as I often do) that left turns merge from the left, you start getting some really odd configurations which can be really fun to build. (And are not at all real world solutions - but this is a video game.)

Great idea! This is also essentially the same interchange as the one on I-395 with Virginia Route 7 (King Street) in Alexandria. I've always thought it was a design idea that could be used all over the place.

That's an amazing interchange. Though I suspect leaving only one straight lane limits throughput, maybe adding more straight lane solves it, but in real life it definately cost more to build. Anyway, that looks gorgeous.

This is a remarkable and beautiful design, and probably works much better than the standard clover. I noticed that the loops are not really needed anymore, those could be built as left curves as well. But looping around definitely reduces the slope needed to overcome the height difference. Good work Yumbl, thumbs up.

Cool video and design -- I just disagree a bit with your lane math, I think there should be at least 2 through lanes on each highway. The cloverleaf is already taking up a lot of space, so two 3-lane highway bridges won't change much. I've never seen a highway interchange with only 1 through lane IRL unless it was under construction, so it would have to be a very unique traffic flow situation for that to work permanently. I know it's just a simulation game and I'm being picky though. PS: Could you make a video showing us landscaping & grading an interchange? That would be really cool to watch!

id just split the 3 lanes into 2 sets of 2 lanes. the middle of the 3 lanes can split both ways without any issues at all and is common irl. this does mean the 2 added lanes would need to be merges instead (or added lane that after one segment merges), but again, thats fairly standard irl (and works fine in game too). but tbh id just have 2 lanes for the straight routes, have the exit as a single lane (without removing one from the straight route) that eventually splits into 2, theres no lights so it wont back up.

I can give you at least 2 examples (one historical, 1 finally being upgraded) of only 1 through lane on the mainline. Both of the examples are on PA-28 here in the Pittsburgh area. Exit 6 (Highland Park Bridge) is the current one that is being upgraded to 2 through lanes for both directions. The other historical one, was Exit 5 for PA-8. On the PA-8 one, you can look at historical StreetView on the NB lanes, and still see the single lane configuration (Sept '07 imagery). The SB side there had been upgraded just before StreetView existed.

I almost exclusively use his interchanges in my cities, usually the first thing I do in a map is go in and change those that lead into the city itself, then others along the way. They are not only efficient but absolutely beautiful too. Now I just need to make one while watching his videos.

@@inyobill I used to. But now I try to see how much money I can make off my citizens. It’s not uncommon for me to make roughly 600,000/wk off my citizens. My residential and commercial areas are separated by a city park with 15 or so park gates they have to walk through to get to work and back home again. Very efficient for making money.

Very neat looking. IRL the other issues with Cloverleafs are the small radii of the loops allowing for only slow speeds/velocities.

There's a real life version of this intersection just east of Frankfurt am Main airport in Germany (Frankfurter Kreuz, crossing between Autobahn 3 and Autobahn 5). It's simplified in the sense that it looks like a regular cloverleaf, but with sliproads to prevent weaving. Pretty interesting design!

Looking at this my question is "in real life would this be cheaper to build then a flyover interchange" and at a glance I think it would be. And better yet it can replace existing clover leaf interchanges that are ment to be the cheapest highway intersection as far as I can tell, so it would be a great "upgrade" design.

Sure bit the tighter radius makes traffic slower and throughput lower. Then it looks more expensive then a turbine intersection which to me looks similar in throughput. The design is beautiful though. And perhaps the ideas could be used to improve existing cloverleafs.

the expensive part of Interchanges are afaik the Overpasses. The classic Cloverleaf has exactly one (or two if you build it seperate per direction), which is as low as you can get.

I think the only issue, in terms of upgrading existing interchanges, would be construction of the upgrade and possible disruptions to the exits in terms of them possibly being shutdown all together while its built since the one road will need its bridge over the other possibly elongated. I still think flyovers will be preferred due to ease of building and cost but I could still see this being used in certain areas.

Submit those to various local governments in China maybe. That country seems to have a bottomless supply of infrastructure money and a lot of planned highways to be built. If this design can reduce traffic accidents by removing weaves, they will likely put some in.

The one critique I have for most of your interchanges is that while you're very space efficient as far as that goes, the right hand turn slip lanes would probably not be the greatest to drive on in real life because there's a whole bunch of turning back and forth. IRL, I'd take the hit to the overall footprint to get a single large-radius right hand turn rather than the right-left-right-left-right you get for "shrink wrapping" the slip lanes around the left hand loops.

True. Plus putting those opposing ramps that close to each other has safety issues needing barriers or grading. Plus presumably there needs to be a way to repair each lane.

Lovely interchange and tutorial once again Yumble. I’ve managed to replicate your double trumpet interchange on vanilla (console) to great effect - may be a challenge to try the no-weave cloverleaf without mods but perhaps I’ll give it a go soon.

I know absolutely nothing about interchange design, but one thing I notice in this is that going into the interchange (i.e. not going straight, but taking the right lane off), there is a very tight curve along the outside edge. In real life, this would probably be problematic, especially having just veered right to enter the ramp and then having to go into a sharp curve in the opposite direction immediately after. I am picturing encountering this interchange for the first time and not paying attention to the SLOW - 25MPH! signs and sliding into the railing halfway through. I think this could be greatly mitigated by straightening out the onramps instead of following the contours of the cloverleafs. The result would be less aesthetically pleasing (it would basically be a cloverleaf inside a diamond) but would be much easier to navigate and as a result, much safer.

This is the same idea as I-10 at Causeway Blvd in New Orleans LA. Cloverleaf was generally bad not just because of its weaving issue this video solves. It also causes a speed reduction for turning movements in system interchange which this configuration cannot solve. A lot of cloverleaf interchange built in last century were actually for busy arterial access, which doesn't really need a full interchange capacity-wise. So when those were reconstructed, they were turned into Parclo or DDI which is just enough to serve the demand and safer. For system interchange between two freeways that were built as cloverleaf in the past, there loop ramps were usually replaced by flyover ramps which mitigates both weaving and speed reduction issues when the bridges at the interchange are due for replacement. Cloverleaf interchange requires least bridges by taking a lot of space, so it is not hard to fit any new configuration without acquiring additional Right-of-way. That's why this kind of practice doesn't exist a lot as a solution for traditional cloverleaf interchange.

Here in California most freeways add 1-2 lanes before an interchange, so that the number of straight through lanes doesn't go down or goes down only a little bit. So if you need more straight through bandwidth you could expand the approaching segments to 4 or even 5 lane highway, and that would let you keep the straight through part at 2 or 3 instead of going down to 1.

I came across this one a few months ago, some couple of years old workshop item (I think it was "2021 No Weave Cloverleaf Interchange") and have since been using that quite a bit. Really handy, I also tend to use the 7 as the radius of the 'inner loops' as the game then gives me 8 nodes per 360 degrees instead of the four per 360 degrees you get when the radius is 6. Which makes the rest of the setup easier for me as I don't need to juggle with nodes.

The Node Spacer mod enables you to set the default road distance between nodes to a lower value.

This is a beautiful interchange. Honestly it's quote stunning. This should be a standard interchange in a just world. I'm not sure I like the idea of reducing through traffic to one lane right after the exit. I feel like that would be a bottleneck

Not a CE but what sticks out to me are the roads that "hug" the cloverleaf loops. You're introducing an "S" bend that isn't great for traffic, or at least that's what CEs have told me in the past when I was drawing up plans for streets and parking lots. I feel those four strips should instead be large curves that don't hug the cloverleaf loops but instead just kind of "kiss" them at a tangent. (edit) having said that though, I think that's the only issue with this intersection. It looks great.

Beautiful, but misses one functional component. There’s no mechanism for a turnaround. This is easily fixed with an underpass on each side, but it’s important for traffic to be able to go back the direction it came from at a cloverleaf. Add that, and you’ve really hit a remarkably functional replacement for a frustrating feature of interstate driving.

As someone who grew up in the NOLA area, I'm ashamed to admit I had to look at google maps. To be fair, my family never needed to get on causeway from I-10, or vice versa. In general, though, New Orleans and the Northshore (and the Baton Rouge area) offers a lot of examples of the good, the bad, and the ugly of interchanges. Just to the south of I-10 and Causeway, you have I-10 and Airline Highway (US 61), which has an elevated roundabout. Then you have I-10 and US 90 (its right by the Superdome), which is absolute spaghetti (actually, the entire Ponchartrain Expressway is spaghetti, but its really bad at that interchange). I-610 has multiple exits with incredibly short spacing that just lead into suburban areas. I-310 and I-10 looks like a normal T interchange like you'd plop in game, until you actually drive it, and realize those ramps are absurdly high up. Then you have I-12, which has a lot of good, simple diamond interchanges with local rural roads. I-12 and LA 434 is a good example, as is I-12 and LA 3158. I-12 and US 51 Business has a dumbbell interchange, and I-12 and US 61 has a textbook perfect cloverleaf. The only really bad interchange I can speak of is I-12 and I-55, and that's just because they made it so damned compact that merging from a ramp is difficult in all but the lightest traffic. Also, all the locals pronounce it New "Or-lens". Except for the parish (i.e., county), which is "Or-leans" Parish. "N'awlins" is just some kitschy tourist stuff.

There is a much, MUCH simplier solution to dealing with the weave. While it doesn't fix the capacity issue, it does improve safety tremendously. The textbook method is to have the weave take place on a collector/distributor road, at lower speeds and without interference from through traffic. A recently invented poor-man's version involves adding a buffer lane between the through lanes and the loop lane, essentially performing the same function as a collector/distributor road. Minneapolis has several instances of this design. If you look up "buffer auxiliary lane" you will find a 2021 paper on it summarizing safety outcomes from implementations in Minnesota. Not much else; the design is fairly new and not very famous.

having only one "straight-through-lane" feels a bit weird for an interstate basically, I would increase them by one each, so instead 3-2=1+1=2+1=3. I would make 4-2=2+1=3+1=4 for those. but other than that I think it is a brilliant design, in reality only discarded because the classic cloverleaf with weaves is so much cheaper to build as it does not require nearly as much bridges than this one. but then again we are not in reality here, so I love it. :D

Have you tried a slowverleaf yet? It’s when you throw your leafs on feeders then throw a timed traffic light on the node where the leafs and feeder meet. Mainly for collision reduction

This is beautiful. I'm not a Cities: Skylines player, but as an inhabitant of the real world, I'd love to see this interchange replacing as many standard diamond/clover interchanges as possible. Pretty to look at and much more efficient, for what seems to be the same footprint. Of course the downside, like you said, is that it's probably more expensive because of the increased number of overpasses.

This is quite beautifulan I might try to use it myself. The one thing a standard cloverleaf has over this is the u-turn. I still despise it though.

Absolutely genius ! Only a shame that it needs 2 more bridges than the original clover leaf. Otherwise this would be the find of a lifetime for in the real world.. The advantage of a clover leaf is exactly that. Big capacity but cheap to build. But with this rather nasty disadvantage of the weaving. But if a cloverleaf needs 2 extra bridges I think in the real world we actually have better solutions for that price.. But this was amazing I must give you that!!

Wouldn't the largest downside to this design in a real world application be the single lane straight traffic? Some vehicles that travel on freeways go very slowly, and regular passenger drivers might want to pass them.

Yes, but in the real world the two highways might have more than three lanes in the first place. The interchange just subtracts two lanes, no matter how many there were initially.
