They may be invasive and painful to the touch, but I've always found these thistles fascinating. Like many plants they go through amazing transformations in order to proliferate. You might see them growing anywhere from a wide-open field of grass to a big crack in the pavement.
These were all found and shot in central California. While not a botanist I believe some of these were spiny plumeless thistles (carduus acanthoides) and some I think are bull thistles aka spear thistles (cirsium vulgare). I've been shooting these a while know- the first one I shot was actually for a Vine haha, remember Vine? Good times.
