I noticed that when she was talking about the shop, it was in reference to her dad more than her. I thought that her joyfulness to take over the shop was because she was making her dad happy therefore making her happy. The line when she was trying to stop Wade from sending in the citations, but failed was something like, “Those tickets going through are gonna shut down the shop and my dad’s gonna die,” was a line that gave a subtle glimpse into her mindset. That and the way she always uses her element to weld things shut, expand things, or make glass also showed how her calling was towards something else. I’m not an immigrant, but I’ve seen and heard a lot of stories of parents immigrating over and starting a business with plans of passing it down to their children, but the child doesn’t want to take over or they will just to make the parents happy. Probably a reason why I picked up on it or guessed.

I believe the story of Elemental was actually based off the experiences of the director, Peter Sohn, being a Korean immigrant to the US. I read about it shortly after watching the movie, and honestly, as a Korean-American myself, I can really see the similarity between the fire people and Koreans. The 'big bow' is literally a Korean thing to show respect, and the fire-related food being too hot for Wade is like how there's a lot of spicy Korean food. The whole 'your parents decide your future' thing is also VERY Asian, plenty of Asian kids grow up with very specific expectations from their parents
@boramuffin12
@boramuffin12 10 месяцев назад
Interesting point of view! Growing up watching a lot of Bollywood movie, I see a lot of the visuals that actually remind me to India or South Asia culture. The colors. The instrument used in the songs. And yes, also the spicy food. Then again, I could be wrong (I'm South-East Asian btw).

At least to me her dilemma felt pretty clear, even from the start, that she might not want to own the shop. Especially throughout the beginning and middle, it's pushed hard that that's what she was going to do when she grows up. Her dad made it feel like it had to happen, and she went with it. It makes a lot sense that as she got older, she realized she might not actually want to do what he does, even if it was subconscious.

i feel the same, as a kid she wanted to follow in her fathers footsteps so she was excited to mimic him, then as an adult she saw her fathers health getting worse and felt obligated to take over for his sake rather than hers, and as she says later she never stopped to ask herself what she wanted
@Thatnerdygal
@Thatnerdygal 10 месяцев назад
Yeah I thought it was pretty clear too. Like sometimes you have one set option in life and until your presented with another you sometimes don’t consider a different path. For Ember it was all about the shop. It wasn’t until she saw a different and new path that she realized maybe I don’t want to run the shop.

Same here. I understand Emder's dilemma of not really owning the shop. I had something like that when I was little and growing up.
@MsVelve
@MsVelve 10 месяцев назад
It was pretty clear to me too. Ember was raised in the shop, it was established early on she never leaves their neighbourhood, so ofc she wanted to help her dad and felt responsible for taking over his work. Until she left to the city, then met Wade's family, is when she was presented an opportunity to actually do something else with her life - I felt that quite strongly, since it happened to me too :D
@abramrexjoaquin7513
@abramrexjoaquin7513 10 месяцев назад
We have to look at this in a psychological manner. The shop was Ember's way of *CONNECTING* to her caregiver/cultural core/idol. You see her break his challenge, do things for him w.o second thoughts of selfishness, people pleasing patterns towards her father while failing to please everyone else(including her mother and customers) and this was not her fault. It was her father. He created a whole persona of work and family being mixed w.o any External options (happens often in first gen immigrants minority that is forced to contort into the current social systems "othered".) And W.O failure... The environment becomes Father's intentions towards the only child in the family. (I want you to remember Ember's dynamic with her mother... Notice the difference) Parental Incompetence often happens with STRESSED and UNPREPARED individuals becoming parents.

My impression of Ember having a sudden realization of not running the shop and finding her own dream was bc the shop was all she knew. They established very quickly that she never went anywhere else and her parents and the shop was her entire life. And it wasn't until she met Wade, where she actually started to go out and explore and find out what the world around her is really about....and that there was more to life than what she knew. Her parents supported her taking over the shop because that was their dream, but it wasn't until others saw her talents that she overlooked as something special.

I think they're wrong in saying there was NO conflict in Ember. In watching this movie 4 times in the first week. You'll realize that from the beginning Ember's light was there every time she shaped glass. Rewatch you'll see. This shows that she has a passion that she did not let shine when she was conforming to what she felt was right and what she HAD to do to be a good daughter. That's why her anger was constantly there. Because she always had that conflict but she was never honest until she met Wade. Also this movie was such a love letter to the elements and it's represented so much throughout the film. This movie was also STUNNING and I mean STU-NNING! In 3D. I saw it in 3D, 3 times. That really added to the emotional reaction to the movie. I still admit this movie gets better the more your watch it. I've been watching people react so much to it and I'm so glad they're appreciating it a lot. ❤❤❤

I feel like we haven’t had one in a while and for kids, movies and tv may be the only way they see a healthy relationship and see acceptance to love who you love. I think Wade is supposed to be like therapy for Ember where she has this hidden emotion and has no idea where its coming from so he helps her figure out something she didnt even know. I think the point is that the hint of her not wanting that was her anger but because she didnt know thats why she was so hot tempered we the audience didnt until Wade comes along and helps her figure that out.

I understand the criticism about the idea of running the shop being bad wasn’t telegraphed more, BUT from experience I grew up being pushed to go one way with my life and I always bought into it and the stress and depression and anger it caused trying to live up to that was always hard. I never strayed from the idea that that is what I need to do. It wasn’t until life stopped during COVID and I had to sit with myself for once, I realized it’s not what I wanted and it’s what others wanted for me. My whole mentality changed in a matter of moments when the pieces clicked. So that turn didn’t surprise me. But I understand how that is not movie language and it can not be conveyed in the same way.

This movie was so good. I relate with Ember's situation a lot, except my parents were more overbearing and less tolerant. However, the unspoken burden in feeling that you _have to_ repay your parents' sacrifice is still the same. The culture clash was also pretty relatable too, esp the frustration of an outsider not getting your situation beyond the surface level but it being too complex and frustrating for yourself, and too much so to explain well/satisfyingly so outsiders can understand. Sometimes, you just have to remind yourself that ppl are open to helping even a little, and even if they don't fully understand, that's not an attack on/dismissal of you. Shame the movie suffered from lack of promotion (didn't even know it was out until news abt its box office came out) and weird backlash.

Ember’s excitement about running the shop is to make her father proud. It’s this instinct to want to take over for tir parents after they’ve sacrificed so much for you and often you don’t notice that you’re not doing it for yourself. As a second gen immigrant myself whose family also owned a mom and pop shop for 45 years, there was a lot of pressure to always work and always be available and this underlying expectation that you’ll take over or run it. And you do it because it makes your family so happy and that brings you joy. As you get older, you can feel conflicted and not really know why. So her realizing she didn’t want to work the shop wasn’t out of nowhere at all. At least, it’s obvious to people who’ve been in this situation. If she really loved it, wanted it, she’d be more of a people person. Notice how everything she did was for her father. Not for the customers and not for the shop itself. Subconsciously she likely didn’t want to have to connect with customers the same way her father does so naturally. That’s why her temper was so bad.

I think the fact that this was said to be a bad movie clouded your ability to read the subtle storytelling. Which it is not actually subtle cuz it's a kid's movie. Like ik Ember was always happy and excited to help her dad but what kid isn't? But more importantly is her reaction when her dad does let her take control, she is obviously not in her flow state, the same way Wade hates his job because it makes him cry. But unlike Ember, he understands his emotional state so he tells us he's been going from job to job, and it's because his dad died. Our main character finds out that her emotions come from somewhere and are telling her something about herself that she never even gave a thought to cuz her mission, her goal, her purpose was always there from even before she could remember. That's why it takes someone from outside her "bubble" 😅 to even notice something is wrong, that this isnt normal.

This movie has a lot of meaning. Especially because this is a dedication of its creator, Peter Sohon, to his parents who died during its production. Ember's life is inspired by Peter's own experience, as he comes from a family of immigrants. And Ember and Wade's love story also draws some inspiration between Peter and his wife, Anna. Even Ember and Wade's personalities matches their owns, with Peter being a crybaby like Wade and Anna having a temper like Ember.

FYI ~ The Leidenfrost Effect is most commonly demonstrated by using steam to insulate between hot and cold materials. MythBusters even tested it once by wetting their hands and thrusting them into molten lead - while momentary (due to the limited amount of water coating their hands), both reported to have barely felt any significant warmth. It's interesting how they used this between Wade and Ember (beings of literal water and fire) to show how they can indeed contact one another without harm to either.

I mean you guys kind of said it. This movie is from Embers pov. It's her story. So we don't know that Ember doesn't want to run the shop until Ember herself begins to realize it. She's spent her life with her dad telling her how great she's going to be running it and building up the expectation that she's supposed to take over. She didn't think to ask "what do I want" because it wasn't in the plan her dad gave her. I personally really love that the characters are so bright and flowy versus the background. It tells the audience that the characters are what's important and it shows us that Ember herself values people over objects (again, it's her story, her pov). It also explains why the emotional aspect is so weird. Ember heself isn't all that emotional except in anger.. until Wade. She's so wrapped up in trying to prove she's "a good daughter" that she's kinda blinded herself to everything else. Once she subconsciously embraces what Wade treaches her the story suddenly gets teally emotional and moves forward.

It started off with a really small opening weekend and seems to be ending with a bigger Global box office then John Wick chapter 4 and a higher international box office than spider-verse.

Elemental was conceived and directed by Peter Sohn, whose parents were Korean immigrants in the '70s Bronx... So I guess Ember's family may be Korean too ? really hot/spicy food ; biiiiig respect for the parents ; the bow... ? Okay, that can be others cultures too 😅 But the film is now the more successful Pixar film in Korea & Peter Sohn say I take a lot inspirations from his family 😊 I really love that movie... As an Asian only daughter and a pathological people pleaser, I can relate with her repressed feelings. She felt like it is her responsibility to make her parents "happy" to be a "good daughter" to repay their sacrifices. so thinking of doing anything else feels like a sin, even showing signs of it. I guess yeah, it still came out though, through her temper.

This movie is incredibly underrated. Saw it when it was in theaters and it was one of the sweetest movies of the year. The animation, visuals, and world-building were all incredible, but the moments between Wade and Ember were some of the more cathartic, emotional parts of the film. Very well done. Is it perfect? No. But it is sweet and romantic in all the best ways.

Elemental was such an unexpected pleasure! I saw this as a final film in a local cinema that recently closed it doors for good, expecting it to be just a film my daughter would enjoy. Previews didn't have me excited but as someone who struggles with their temper I connected with Ember on that level, and the way she was affected by the other elements/different perspectives and the opportunities presented to her was beautiful.

It's really there, Gregg... Her temper and her inability to be GOOD at the part of the job that requieres her to be patient and to deal with difficult customers it's the clue. She had NO patience AT ALL for that, that's the clue. She really, deeep down, wasn't into it... that's the reason for the temper thing. She was "inception-ed" into thinking she wanted to take over the shop because that's what her father wanted. And, Ember, as a little kid, tought she wanted that too because it's all she knew. I really loved how subtle this movie was about it.

I loved this movie! I don't think Ember not wanting to run the shop came out of left field. We see her lose her temper a handful of times already, and when Wade explains what he gets out of his own temper, it immediately planted the seed in me that running the shop wasn't what she wanted. She wanted to want to run the shop, and she was angry at the part of her that was rejecting it the whole time.

I feel like you overlooked some of the dialogue. The dialogue itself is what tells you that Ember doesn't want to run the shop, it's subtle, because she is repressing her emotions and thoughts, but it is there. She never once says that she wants to save the shop for herself, it's all about how upset her dad is going to be, how it's his dream and how much they sacrificed for her. She doesn't refer to it as "our" shop or "my" shop, but only her dad's shop. They also set it up with her getting very easily upset with customers whenever her dad tried to give her more responsibility. She was fighting herself because she didn't want to be there. She was happy to help her dad out, but struggled with being left in charge. She was subconsciously self-sabotaging with not being "ready" to take over, but then feeling guilty for not being ready because she didn't want to let her dad down. The storytelling is definitely there, but it is subtle.

Ember is representing Asian Americans. East Asian/Korean specifically. Ember's 'race' is sorta based on Middle Eastern and Southern Asian cultures. Although, the director is Korean himself and used most of his culture on it. Maybe, if you've had time to think about it since your immediate post viewing reactions, you can see how Ember's dream not being running the store did not come out of left field. from the beginning she is easily set off by the customers and throughout the story it is suggested that her temper is trying to tell her something… And that would be that she never had considered or explored what her own dreams might be.

And i agree that they were really creative with their elemental abilities. I typically see myself as more of a fire person. It probably helped that the Pixar short that preceded the movie in theaters was from UP and had me in tears, but I really enjoyed a new movie with a strong love focus. Ember is just so sassy and hotheaded and determined and Wade is so soft and sweet and supportive. They’re everything! And the song written for them, Steal the Show, is a banger. The animation is 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾 I think Ember’s conflict with the shop is meant to be on the more subtle end. She’s forcing the desire on herself, but she herself is never capable of doing it right. Really wanted them to expand more on how rhe elements work well together but I didn't mind the romance even though the dad is a whole lot controversial about her daughter liking a water guy. To put yourself to be obligated to take over your father's legacy but not thinking on what you want, but having a hard time connecting with people at the same is hard to do she never knew what she wanted until the waterboy's mom gave her an idea. So this is more of finding yourself which they could've left the romance out and expanded on not just finding herself out but how important each element are with each other. But that's just me. A pretty solid movie reminds me of inside out mixed with zootopia ember partnering up with someone that everyone gets along with while ember is someone that alot of people despise go put on a adventure to solve a big problem but they hook up at the end. Like fr.

I felt that her desire to not take over the shop was expressed by her impatience with the customers. She didnt need to struggle endlessly to create her artworks, she was able to just do it and beautifully too. The father expressed his passion in how he handled the customers. One of those times where the writing was expressed in an unspoken way. I believe any hints towards it would have lessened the impact it had later on. This was the first movie to make me cry in 10 years, the visuals were great but the storytelling unmatched. Turning Red had a similar theme but the writing is on different levels. The two central characters were almost perfect personifications of masculine and feminine, through a unique perspective sure, but true to its core. I felt that more could have been unearthed about the feminine, but then again how much do we really understand about it? For what we do know however, I think it is a powerful representation.

(seriously) Coupled with Thomas Newman's score, it created this other land you wanted to live in. I think part of what might've hurt Elemental's box office was the underwhelming trailer. Even the animation seemed underwhelming in the trailer, and that was the movie's greatest strength.
