I've used many of these techniques with graphite (AKA good ol' pencil). I've also, with only occasional success, used charcoal with pencil. But generally, the two mediums, while they seem similar, really aren't. Finally, I strongly recommend a pair of latex gloves. They not only help keep things cleaner, they also reduce pesky fingerprints which, once revealed in charcoal, are there to stay.

thanks Matt... I work with charcoal alot and while I struggle with the shadings, depth and smudges, what you mentioned in this video helps me keep my cool...
