I came back to watch this again, and I have to say that you are one of a small handful of people in both Chinese and Japanese martial arts that actually has the proper mental focus in forms demonstrations on RU-vid. I cannot stress enough how important the mental aspect is. Once you get “in the zone” in layman’s terms, your form goes up to a whole different level.

That kind of you to say. I call it, "Attention and Intention" once you can control them you really are in the zone, in life and in the forms.

Thanks for sharing, master Niel. Is the elephant fist designed to strike both with the ends of the knuckles like a leopard fist and also raking in a circle like a kup chui? And what is the advantage of the elephant fist vs. the kup chui or leopard fist? Is the elephant fist always done with the thumb behind the other four fingers, or is it sometimes done with the thumb behind the index and middle finger; I think I saw a picture of Lau Ben doing this, but maybe it was another fist? It seems like there is a greater risk of breaking the thumb if the elephant fist is not performed correctly, is that true? Thanks.
@Choy-Li-Fut-Kung-Fu
@Choy-Li-Fut-Kung-Fu 7 месяцев назад
Yes, there is a greater risk of damaging the thumb with the Elephant Fist technique. This risk is especially pronounced with a direct straight punch, although the Kup Chi movements are acceptable if you have flexible thumbs. It's important to note that this form is designed for a taller individual, allowing them to effectively defend against smaller, high-level, close-range opponents. Many of the strikes in this form land with maximum power just inches away from the practitioner's own body, resulting in the appearance of a bent fist. Consider a scenario where two opponents are bear hugging a tall fighter. It is in these moments that this particular technique becomes invaluable.
@Seahund
@Seahund 6 месяцев назад
@@Choy-Li-Fut-Kung-Fu Thanks, your explanation makes sense and adds context. The 'windmill' striking arm motion seems somewhat unique in that it's close-in as you mention and goes in a motion more like an airplane propeller in contract to most other CLF arm motions. The elephant fist striking surface fits with the angle of this close-in motion. The index and middle finger knuckle version of the fist seems like it would fit cavity striking applications. The leopard fist could work too, but you'd have to angle your wrist more than the elephant fist. The originators thought this all through. The history and theory of the techniques is interesting. Thanks.

Sifu, thanks for sharing. I had heard about the elephant form but have never seen it. I didn’t recognize a lot of the classical CLF moves in that, so if I didn’t know and had just seen that form posted at random I would have struggled to know it was CLF. I love all the elbows! Very powerful form…like an elephant!

@Choy-Li-Fut-Kung-Fu 10 месяцев назад
You're very welcome! The Elephant Form in Choy Li Fut Kung Fu is indeed a unique and powerful form, and it might appear quite distinct from some of the more classical CLF moves. It's fascinating how different forms within a martial art system can vary in their techniques and characteristics. The emphasis on powerful movements and the incorporation of elbows certainly give it a distinctive feel, reminiscent of the strength and grace of an elephant. Thanks for your observations and for appreciating the form's unique qualities! 🐘🥋👏😊

@Choy-Li-Fut-Kung-Fu
@Choy-Li-Fut-Kung-Fu 10 месяцев назад
In the Lau Bun lineage of Choy Li Fut, the Elephant Form stands as a unique and distinctive form in its own right. However, in other Choy Li Fut lineages, the movements associated with the elephant are typically not presented as an independent form but rather appear within other forms. For example, you might encounter elephant movements within the 10 Animal Form. The main animals, which are universally recognized across mainstream CLF lineages, include the Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Crane, and Leopard/Panther. Nevertheless, there can be some variations and disagreements between lineages regarding the inclusion of other animals. These additional animals may include the Lion, Mythical Lion (dancing lion), Horse, Cub Tiger, Cub Bear, Monkey, Gibbon, Bear, Wild-Man/Bigfoot, and the Elephant. It's interesting to note that the Elephant's movements might bear a resemblance to those of the Horse and Praying Mantis. This diversity in interpretations and variations adds depth and richness to the Choy Li Fut tradition. 🥋🐘🐎🦗

It's essential to remember that martial arts, including Choy Li Fut Kung Fu and the Elephant Form, have their unique value and philosophy. They offer much more than just practical combat techniques. Martial arts promote discipline, physical fitness, mental strength, and a profound understanding of self-defense principles. While MMA, boxing, jujitsu, and wrestling are excellent combat sports, they may not provide the same holistic benefits that traditional martial arts offer. Ultimately, the choice of martial art depends on individual goals and preferences.
