Okay, please people...I really love and respect animals and am amazed by their intelligence and resourcefulness. The ability to create images through art, takes an extremely high level of intelligence that only humans possess. Art, even in it's most basic form, is a cultural phenomenom - please do not believe everything you see on the internet.
Dear lord, but that was awesome to watch. And to see the elephant flapping his/her ears so much... I learned that when they do so, it means they are happy and that the painting made the elephant happy was awesome. It seem skeptical at first, until the first lines stayed. Then the elephant seemed to get more into it, even eager to paint more. That was amazing. I think we opposable thumb ape-children have underestimated our fellow beasts. We should look more into this immediately!
It all goes to show the grand intellect of the elephant, comparable to us. It definitely helps to have a dextrous appendage, even if the trunk has no fingers, since if you have "hands" you can easily express yourself through painting and drawing, even in a basic fashion. I imagine if dolphins had arms, they'd be even better at painting.
saw a show about these elephants on NatGeo yesterday. They sent a crew there in response to the youtube vids. It is real ! each elephant has been trained to do one portrait, which they sell to tourists and thru a website. Utterly amazing !!! And yes, the elephants are treated well by their handlers !
i have goose bumps i cant imagine what i just saw !! was just beautiful i think if they could paint how they feel what would they paint i think this is and all elephants are inteligent !! what i saw was they even understand in color ! that was truly amazing i want a painting how much would one cost?
Magnificent!!!!!! Humans dominate animals, thinking they are the almighty species.....WRONG! Animals are FAR more intelligent then we humans! BRAVO!! I ♥ ELEPHANTS
Its amazing how smart animals are, they just have difficulties to express themselves either because they have no hands, no language we understand, and because we humans never give them a chance.
I don't think the elephant was tortured, but if you do more research, they are trained to do this by slight tugs on their ears by the humans standing next to them.
They take very good care of them, the way they make them able to paint them selves is that they give them huge mirrors, the elephants look into them, see them selves, understands its them selves, then they show the elephants painting and how to do it, like they way they show it is put up the board like this, they show the painting stick thingy to them, dip it in some color, then rub it on the paper, after a lot of this the elephant can do this without torture Elephants are awesome(dolphins to ;)
Does anyone know about the music in this video? Artist? Where I can get this track and others like it? I think this is incredible. What a beautiful animal and what an amazing thing to see!
1. You brought it up to make your case, therefore not pedant, but relevant. 2. Yes. I think that most would agree with me. Do you feel that painting a picture is human contact? Going further with that, do you think any comparable activity would be enjoyable to elephants because you consider it human contact? i.e. circus tricks
I've heard that elephants in captivity actually have an average lifespan 10-20 years longer than those in the wild. Or did you mean performing elephants in particular?
Take the idea of cruelty out of this just for a second.... AN ELEPHANT IS PAINTING PICTURES OF ELEPHANTS. Astonishing! My mind is blown at their brain power.
They are aware of themselves and they do know they are painting themselves. This one even paints babies. They are very smart. The only training they need to draw is to be shown a different medium to draw on.
Scientists did research on this and found that they have self awareness, they express extremely high cognitive abilities, and have emotions just like humans do. To train an elephant to do this doesn't take much work. They draw in the dirt with sticks all the time (nobody knows why), it's just that they replaced sticks with paint brushes and trainers tug at their ears gentally to show them that they could do more than lines. After some practice, this is what you get out of it.

What is the name of the song and who is the composer? :)
I sure hope you are not talking to me Revia. I have done PLENTY of research on elephants. I was actually making a comment in regards to a previous poster who said that "elephants are whipped into making painting like this". I was stating that an elephant sanctuary would NEVER do this.
I assume the painters show the elephant where they want it to make lines, and then it's trained to paint there. That's why there are so many cuts in the video.
I think it's more of a question of whether or not the elephant recognizes the fact that it's drawn other elephants, instead of just imitating pictures that its seen before.
i would like to think that torture wasnt part of the process ..but ya it is a sad thing cant help but to suspect it...but at the same time its wonderful to see such brilliance from a beautiful creature that we share this earth with.
I understand your opinion and rational. There are plenty of fakes out there and then some. I can assure you this elephant is truly painting this picture and was taughter by their mahout to do so. They do paint for the tourists during the shows they put on. But elephants also actually enjoy painting quite a bit. They have even been found in the wild doodling and drawing basic pictures in the dirt holding a stick in their trunk. This elephant stays at a free camp taken care of by the government
i love elephants...and they are really special...BUT this trick is obviously done by the trainer using the elephant as a tool....he pushes the tusk up or down..left to right and taps when he wants the brush connected to the canvas..making them change brushes too, by handing it to them.....like using the tusk as a cursor...like you use the mouse on your computer screen.......still superintelligent creatures but these asians are fooling the art buyers
this makes me question is there realy a difference between us and any other animal? Our evolution and progress seems to be the only thing in my opinion.
there are multiple videos of different elephants doing similar work. It's possible they are trained to pain certain scenes, but I HIGHLY doubt torture is a factor.
the elephant is reacting to pushes and pulls by the mans hand, not actually "painting" as in from its own creativity if you notice. Any time the man removes his hand from the elephants trunk, he drops his trunk and that stroke is complete. So the elephant is in fact physically making the markings, but the human is guiding it as a ring leader tells a circus elephant to stand on its hind legs or pick up objects in the ring with signals or touches. Still amazed he's that extended to the animal.
@Ilamarea Thats what I am curious about too. I would think that they taught the elephant one picture to paint and that's what they paint but you never know.
