Elephant seals battle over mating rights 

In December, northern elephant seals embark on a lengthy migration to Mexico where they gather to mate. Competition is rife - alpha males keep guard of their harems of females defending their mating rights against any would-be rivals. Fights can get very heated and may even end in death.
