Elevator Action Returns for the Sega Saturn

Episode 34 - I really dislike the term "hidden gem" because it's the go-to phrase for RU-vid click-bait creators, but Elevator Action really does fall squarely into that category. Released by Taito into the arcades in 1994, it was the follow-up to the original 1983 arcade game, which itself was released on the NES. Elevator Action Returns was ported to the Sega Saturn by Ving in 1997, and unfortunately was not released on the Saturn outside of Japan. The game sells for well north of $100 on eBay, but if you're just looking to play the game, you can pick up Taito Legends 2 on either the Playstation 2 or Xbox, as it includes the original arcade version of the game. Do something, because Elevator Action Returns is an awesome game.

The OG Elevator Action was one of my favorite arcade games back in the day. I nearly crapped myself in about '96-'97 when I saw this updated version at the local bowling alley at the time.

i really don't think a super nintendo can pull off something like this, shame it never got a better coverage, only played it in arcades and i pumped so many quarters for it, an amazing game that should have more presence on consoles....

Japanese imports like this, Radiant Silvergun and Keio Yugekitai are what made owning a Saturn really special to me.

This was one of the very first Saturn imports I ever picked up since it was really high on my list, it's amazing how we went from the original on NES all the way to this

For sure. Actually I'm surprised that there was no installment in the series between the original and this game. Seems like a no-brainer on the Genesis or Super Nintendo.

Wow. A sequel to Elevator Action? I had no idea. It really reminds me of this new indie game, Master Spy. I'll have to keep an eye out for that Taito Legends 2 disk.

Ving was such a great help for the sega saturn. They really did such fantastic ports of Taitos games. Bubble Symphony, Liquid Kids, Metal Black, Elevator Action Returns, and Night Striker S they were all just so fantastic. I think if memory serves they were a small company in either Sapporo or Osaka, but have also done many other ports. Some of those ports were on the FM towns and they did games such as Splatterhouse, New Zealand story which are the ones that come to mind. Great Stuff Jibbajaba

Another great video. I would have never heard of this game if you didn't make this. I am always interested in learning more about Saturn games since that is a console I always wished I had when growing up. The more I look into it, the more cool looking games I find. From this video alone, the soundtrack to this game sounds pretty good!

Man, I had that compilation on my PS2 back in the day before I sold all my PS2 games, but maybe because I never cared for the original Elevator Action, I never tried this one out. Now I kinda wish I had.

Don't think it was more than 10 euros back when I bought it either. Totally worth that even if I didn't even play all the games.

I feel like I've kinda fell out of the "arcade" style games, but this looks like something I'd definitely play. I love the art style and the gameplay looks pretty fun too. Zombies! I still need a Saturn, or I'll have to find that compilation. Great video!
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 лет назад
+The Game Grinder To me this game feels less like an arcade game (even though it is one), since the game isn't as repetitive as the original Elevator Action. I'm kind of surprised that this game didn't come out here in the states. It's also a shame that the game didn't get ported over to the Playstation, but I know that Sony was anti-2D.
@TheGameGrinder
@TheGameGrinder 8 лет назад
That's pretty much the vibe I was getting from the footage. It's funny that many of the publishers thought 3D was the end all be all for quality games of the future, when it's seriously less about the graphics then everything else.

Love this game. Hey man can you link me to the article you did about changing the buttons on your Neo Geo stick? I'd like to do that on the two I own. Are the buttons any quieter? I hate loud buttons.
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 лет назад
+Game Sack Sure, here you go: www.cgquarterly.com/2013/04/13/modernizing-a-neo-geo-aes-joystick/ Those buttons are definitely quieter than the stock jobs, but to make them even quieter you can put silencing pads into them. I'm not sure if they make 24mm silencing pads, but you could either buy the 30mm's and try to cut them down, or just make your own. I use silenced buttons in my wooden arcade stick and not only are they quieter but they feel better, as well.

I like your show, man. And kudos on having a well-put-together gaming setup. I dig the PVM (I'm guessing it's a PVM, I can't really tell). I never really considered getting this game on Saturn, because of the Taito Legends 2 disc which you mention in this video, but the cheat code for playing the original game makes me think again.
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 лет назад
+Dave Bladegun Thanks man! Yeah, that's a PVM. Living in California, it isn't too hard to find them so I've managed to collect up a few. The original Elevator Action is on the original Taito Legends release, so if you're just looking to play both games, getting both Taito Legends releases is still going to be almost 10x cheaper than buying this game, unfortunately. Thanks for watching the show!
@davebladegun3009
@davebladegun3009 8 лет назад
+Classic Gaming Quarterly Man I forgot about that first Taito Legends disc. I own the second one, I had the first one and lost it somehow (I think a ghost took it). About the PVM's: Do you have to hook those up via scart>BNC connectors? I'm considering doing my own PVM setup for a consolized MVS, and I have zero experience with using PVM's.
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 лет назад
Dave Bladegun Most PVMs use BNC connectors, so yes you need the scart to BNC adapter, Really old PVMs used a DB-25 connector. Later-model PVMs also accept component and s-video. I record the show in s-video so that's what I always run on my desktop PVM, but use RGB on my larger monitor when I am just playing for fun rather than for the channel.
@davebladegun3009
@davebladegun3009 8 лет назад
+Classic Gaming Quarterly That's really neat. Thanks for the info, I had no idea there were PVM's available with S-video & YUV.
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 лет назад
I think most PVMs support s-video. All three of mine do. Component support was added some time in the late 90's. I never use it, but it's a nice option if I ever need it.

Yeah, the term "hidden gem" gets thrown around way too often and has really sort of lost it's meaning nowadays. Taito Legends 2 for the PS2 is really an amazing arcade collection. There are so many great games on that compilation. That's actually where I discovered Elevator Action Returns.

Can't really go wrong with most of Taito's Saturn catalog. Unfortunately, the games either already are or are fast becoming expensive. Get 'em while you can, or as mentioned in the review, look for the Taito Legends collections.

Agreed on the use of "hidden gem". That term has become pretty tired, much like "underrated". I love reading about games that I've missed, but the vocabulary that's emerged to describe them has become stagnant, in my opinion. Never paid this game enough attention. Those animations are way more detailed than I remember. Kinda wanna try Taito Legends 2, as I find using MAME a little tedious.

I got a Sony PVM today on the cheap, knowing that it wasn't working very well. I tested it with a Super NES and it worked for a few minutes, then the guy who owned it started messing with the buttons and now the screen won't display a picture, and the tally light stays on all the time. Any tips?
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 лет назад
+Dave Bladegun What model is it? Maybe I can come up with a service manual for you. If this happened when he was monkeying with the buttons then it's probably just a setting that needs to be changed.

Picked this game up for $15 buckaroos somewhere. Couldn't believe when I found out how much it was worth. Now I'm afraid to play it lol. I'll pick up that Taito legends disc, although that is starting to get a little pricey as well. I just saw it for $50.00 complete on ebay. Retro game collecting is starting to get into scam territory.
@CGQuarterly
@CGQuarterly 8 лет назад
+Mitchelton Dhomochevsky Damn man, that's a sweet score. I don't know if you're into gaming in RGB (whether on a PVM or using an upscaler) but I would assume that the Saturn version of the game runs at 240p while the Taito disc is going to be 480i. Personally, I would hang on to the Saturn disc if you really want to play the game. My collecting days are basically over. Now I just enjoy playing the games instead of wasting time and money hunting them down. It was fun when old games were just other people's garbage, but now that they're treated like a commodity it has attracted the wrong kind of people.
@mitcheltondhomochevsky7765
@mitcheltondhomochevsky7765 8 лет назад
I'm pretty much in the same boat as you right now. As soon as I started seeing games that aren't even rare hit the $50-$100 mark I said screw it. I still buy older games for collecting but I try to stick to a $30 and under rule. I'm glad to just PLAY games now, though. Collecting can get overwhelming, especially when you have a backlog of 50 unplayed games and a "to buy" list that's even longer. Anyways, great show. Makes the time fly by at work. Subbed.
