I don't know how (very) many performances of this glorious masterpiece I have heard over the years, but this performance, must rank amongst the finest, and possibly the best ever. I loved it from first note to last. Congratulations to orchestra and conductor on a superb performance.

To me it represents the beautiful English countryside in Sussex. Driving through the country lanes and passing the the rolling green fields. The Sun, the rain, and finally arriving at Arundel Castle. As beautiful and flowing like a river. Storm's and lightning. Then a gentle evening light at the end of the journey. Thank you so much for such incredible music.👏👏♥️♥️👏👏

Another truly great performance from one of the world's finest orchestra, with a great conductor at the helm. I must confess, Altinoglu was unknown to me when he took over what I assume is the position of chief conductor, but the rapport between conductor and orchestra is almost tangible. This is totally evident when we hear this inspired performance. Another comment could not have better summed it up than with the words, " this performance, must rank amongst the finest, and possibly the best ever", my feelings precisely.

Looking online, no one knows what song Sir Edward Elgar used for the variations, THAT is the "enigma". It premiered almost 125 years ago, and he took that secret to his grave.

A great performance. I have been looking for a great performance of this work for many years since encountering an old recording of Barenboim conducting the Chicago orchestra at the memorial concert of its late conductor Georg Solti. Barenboim was superb but the video quality was poor and I found all the later recordings online that I found were disappointing. But finally I find this wonderful account, played with passion! That is the element missing from the other accounts I heard.

I agree with you. In America it is considered bad form to applaud between movements, but I think if you've been particularly touched you should be able to express it.

It was inappropriate and distracting, particularly after Nimrod. It is bad manners to spoil the atmosphere and continuity of a piece like that.

I dont know why I never listened to the Enigma-variations before. Of course, I am a complete amateur in so many ways, and this important work I have totally missed! But it is never to late. When I listen to this wonderful music I believe this is music I will return to many times. What a lovely melodic way of handling an orchestra by Elgar!

Initially, Edward Elgar had little formal education and was largely self-taught since he came from a popular-class background, hence his great merit in composition. The Enigma Variations, Op. 36, is a symphonic work comprising a theme and fourteen variations, composed by Elgar. Each variation represents an aspect of a loved one, a friend of his wife or even his editor. They are not intended to be portraits. The impulse of the music is variously inspired by aspects of their personality, their home and surroundings. The work became known as the « Enigma Variations » due to an enigmatic explanation provided by the composer. He repeatedly claimed that there was another theme, never heard, but well known, that was part of the work. There are some inconsistencies in the information provided by Elgar when subsequently asked about the riddle, which might suggest that the theme was theoretical rather than real. Elgar never revealed the solution. Various writers and musicologists have published theories and proposed possible solutions. None is completely satisfactory and it seems likely that it will always remain a mystery unless? But who is behind variation XIII? By simple superstition, the dedicatee of variation XIII would have been hidden. This variation, imbued with intense emotion, would be dedicated to a woman, Helen Weaver. Although they became engaged, the engagement was not broken off until a year later. This event caused great emotional distress for Edward Elgar. At 29, Elgar accepted a new piano student, Caroline Alice Roberts. Love at first sight is immediate, but Caroline comes from a good family and therefore an impossible love. But the heart has its reasons that reason ignores, and Caroline Alice agrees to marry Edward. This union will not be without cost for the bride, who will see herself disinherited. « Taking care of a genius is the work of a sufficiently substantial life for any woman », writes Caroline Alice Elgar in her diary intimate. Indeed, we often forget the importance of the help, encouragement and support of women in the lives of the greatest composers. Happiness is love but better. *Lucien*

Why are the violins so quiet in Troyte? The whole movement is about those scales. Do you know how many hours you have to practice that one riff for to sound as good as they do? Why would you alter the mix after the fact for THAT in particular? What, you think they're going to like- cover up the Timpani lol?? Bruh they're completely different vibrational frequencies. Violin CAN'T cover up timpani in that range, if ANY.

Elgar advised the hidden melody to his “Enigma” Variations can play “through and over” each movement. A contrapuntal mapping of Luther’s hymn “Ein feste Burg” (A Mighty Fortress) above Nimrod verifies it is the mysterious missing melody. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-myjjfkJ27cw.html
