Hi everyone! I wanted to share my favorite song by Ofra Haza, the woman who played Moses's mother in The Prince of Egypt. Sadly she passed away in 2000, the year I was born. I am so honored to be able to keep her memory alive. Thank you for your incredible support on my Tik Tok and everywhere else! Much love, xoxo JADA

*This song was written by Hannah Szenes* , a Jewish-Hungarian refugee & member of the Jewish Brigade in what was then Palestine, who was caught paratrooping near the Hungarian border during an operation to help break prisoners out of Auschwitz (there were numerous escapes at nearly every camp, the struggle was prisoners staying alive between the landmines surrounding the camp, and the collaborationist locals/neighbors who either turned them in or killed them - see: Sobibor). Hannah was caught by Hungarian border guards and executed by firing squad at only 23 years old after enduring hours of interrogation & torture, and refusing to give any intell. It's said she refused the blindfold in order to look her killers in the eyes, but it's hard to get information on the entire affair to this day because of the governments involved (Hungary & UK). This was a volunteer brigade consisting of very young Jewish men & women who fled Europe to Palestine before the British closed the borders to Jews entirely in 1939. It was initially independently formed by survivors of the Jewish Resistance (see: ZOB & Warsaw Ghetto Uprising) & Jewish Palestinians; then later talked into working with the Commando units in the British military. It was they who convinced the Brigade they could go paratroop into Europe and complete civilian rescue missions from camps. While they were successful helping partisans & commiting acts of sabotage on trains and munitions used by the Germans, given the few details known about this mission - enough is known, at least in hindsight, to surmise this was an incredibly brave and selfless mission on behalf of the Jewish fighters, but an intentionally "foolish" one, to put it nicely, on the part of the British Empire who sent them directly into the waiting arms of the enemy. This makes a lot of sense now knowing British-Jewish relations were at an all-time low at this time, starting with Jews in the UK being forced into "Enemy Alien Prison" camps (even British-born citizens) where thousands died from disease or fatal injuries while doing unsafe forced hard labor, the Brits taking the smallest number of Jewish refugees by far out of ALL allied nations (only ~700 forcibly orphaned children via the one-time only Kindertransport), and their abrupt ban of Jewish refugees from entering British-Occupied Palestine after 4 yrs of intially working with Germany via secret Pact to forcibly deport Jews to Palestine (a former-Ottman colony occupied by the British since 1918; yet had zero infrastructure making it an undeveloped wasteland that singled-out & demanded unpaid hard labor on farm land by Jewish refugees; while native Jewish population were resigned to living in their newly bombed-out roofless homes, trying to avoid Arabs newly armed by the British, who told them Jews were trying to "takeover" - many collaborating with Germany in response to both the British occupation & their own Antisemitism - See: Grand Mufti Amin Al-Husseini). British attitude regarding Palestine at the time was to halt, if not shrink, it's Jewish population at the time - which according to the British government, was necessary to "quell Arab outrage" - the very outrage the British intentionally stoked to prevent Jews & Arabs from uniting to remove the brutal British colonizers. I could give so many examples, but the behavior and actions of the British toward the so-called "liberated" Jews in the British-occupied zone of Germany from 1945-1951, the walling of it's border to approx 100,000 Jewish Survivors trying to escape the Polish Keilci Pogrom (1946) shortly after attempting to return "home," and their policy of bombing refugee ships to Palestine (because Europe wouldn't allow them to return home & the British kept them in the German camps) and capturing any survivors and forcing them to live in a tented prison camp in the British-occupied part of Cyprus; etc - demonstrate quite clearly that some of these war-time "missions" using Jewish Palestinians might've been sabotage all along. Long, but important digression, to understand how the poet and writer of this song was killed in WWII. "Eli, Eli" = "My God, my God." This is a song about mercy, pleading for the God they've known so well (demonstrated by the use of the possessive "my" along with an abbreviated word, "Eli," as a nickname and/or informal way of addressing God) to finally see the desperation of his people; the devastating beauty of life and Earth's majesty; trying to hold onto this image as life feels further away. Hannah contrasts the sharp rush of the sea water as it crashes into the shore like lightning from the heavens, with the frailty of mankind. It's a Jewish song, commonly sang during Temple services along with the Cantor, alternating betwern Hebrew and English.
