Tim Farron fails to recognise that the channel boats are primarily carrying economic migrants not refugees and that the numbers are effectively unlimited and he does not even consider the impact on the UK society and economy. He implies that we can either improve processing or address the channel issue whereas obviously we need to do both at once. He refuses to put a cap on his sign up anywhere open borders policy.

Also, he doesn't consider the fact that in most cases it is impossible to ascertain if someone is a genuine refugee. Each asylum seeker has a story. To thoroughly verify one of these stories, you need an investigation team. The case workers simply see how they feel about each case. They can easily get it wrong both ways; dismissing a genuine refugee and accepting a fake one.

Unfortunately Tim Farron was a more effective speaker than the conservative who was too apologetic. I'm not bothered by Britains standing in the world order. I am bothered that Britain is unable to police its own borders. Same goes with the EU which was why I voted Brexit having been an EU supporter up to that point. It matters to populations who can come to their country which is why you are now getting a backlash is countries throughout EU.

Funnily enough on the Eritrean ‘refugees’, when I worked in Border Force there was numerous times when the people claiming to be from Eritrea struggled to pas the language test and were clearly from Sudan or Ethiopia but were granted either bail to have their asylum claim heard later ( and almost all absconded never to be seen again) or were granted Asylum because the system is so appalling.

He never even tried to make a case - even a dishonest case - that taking in the migrants might be good for us Brits. Comparing a very small island like Britain to France in terms of taking immigration is crazy. I also find the fact that Faron does not consider the impact on the people and places they are having to deal with the immigrants is what we have come to expect from politicians. Everyone outside of Britain is more important than those who live here already. Culturally I have a problem with a vast number holding an ideology/religion that cannot integrate through marriage with our population who are not of their persuasion. Look at the trouble that has caused across Europe..especially Sweden not to mention France. It doesn’t work.

I find the migration debate from the two politicians insightful only in the sense it reveals we are led by lambs. The real substance of the debate is ignored or perhaps not even grasped. It is simply that 9 out of 10 people in the world have a lower standard of living and fewer rights than us. With that context it the solutions are bigger than letting people in. As we cannot let everyone in and doing so lowers the standard of living of those here. I think the best thing is to assist them improve their own countries.

There are really only two premises, each of them easy to understand, which are essential to his analysis. First is that the artificial intelligence machine is self augmenting. Second is that it is programmed to have goals and the ability to recognize and adopt means to those goals. An intelligence which is self augmenting will eventually exceed the intelligence of the fixed intelligence of its creator and will be able to frustrate and outsmart its creator. If the available means to its goals are not compatible with the continued existence of human beings, then one of the adopted means to its goal will be the extinction of human beings.

His % stats of global migrants may accurate but it's irrelevant, we have to guage the impact and issues it has specifically on the uk and its citizens. The issue isn't even illegal immigration at this point, it's got so bad we dont have enough homes, schools, doctors etc. Just repeating the mantra of build more homes doesn't cut it I'm afraid. Reduce the demand on housing by reducing immigration and everything gets pressure released.

I think we need a referendum on levels of immigration. Most people are ok with some but we have had mass immigration for about 20 yrs and I suspect most people do not want or support it. In other words we live in a democracy where the likes of Mr Fallon and his many political colleagues, including many conservatives, are overuling the wishes of the people they are meant to represent and also using these same tax payers money to pursue an agenda that the tax payers do not want whilst also taking their tax money to pay for their own high salary, pension and benefits. MPs are paid to represent us, not foreign nationals. If you look a the many terrorist attacks and people killed, raped and injured by a small number of immigrants, this outcome appears acceptable collateral damage to Mr Fallon but it is not acceptable to me. If Mr Fallon is genuine about trying to help he should go to these countries and volunteer to help them using his own resources, not use someone elses hard earnt tax money to pretend to be helping to make himself feel better and presumably give him the sense he is standing on some kind of moral highground when nothing could be further from the truth. He is betraying the people he is meant to represent and putting them at serious risk of harm whilst also impoverishing them and failing to support our own people who are in genuine need. He and his kind should be utterly ashamed of their tretcherous behaviour. I am a Christian who has done volunteer work abroad to help genuine refugees and I did that for God not to make myself look good by ill-considered political moral posturing or accepting pay to do a job and then betraying those who appointed and paid me.

Eliezer talked about super ai "wanting" to do this or that - why would ai want anything at all? Surely it will always remain passive until prompted? The only reason sentient beings want anything is because they are locked into an evolutionary paradigm where the fact that resources are limited will affect their chances of reproduction. Of course, none of this is consciously considered (except by evolutionary biologists), we all just move around wanting, and getting stuff. That's what makes all biological lifeforms dangerous and/or hidden. Ai will never play that game - it doesn't care if it exists or not. I cannot see why ai would ever make the leap towards caring about its existence. Not one of these doomsd-ai people have adequately tackled this leap in their prognostications. Anyone care to disabuse me on this?
@CurtCox
@CurtCox 11 месяцев назад
There are countless researchers, small companies, and independent developers developing autonomous AI agents and of AI that doesn't passively wait until prompted. Right now, they aren't the main offerings from any of the major players, but they are too numerous to list. AI that is smart enough to understand its goals and its environment cares if it exists. "You can't get coffee if you're dead." is a phrase worth Googling on this topic. Rob Miles has a pretty approachable set of videos on general AI safety I highly recommend.

The explicit objective of the big AI companies is to create Artificial General Intelligence. If something is general, it will develop goals, independent of its prompts or the data it was trained on. In the same way that humans, after becoming more general through our intelligence, developed goals other than reproduction. The act of putting together different ideas from different domains, in order to solve a problem, requires settings subgoals. "First I need to use this to get that, and then mix it with this and then problem solved". And if it is able to do this, then its own goals will form, since it already got the ability to form goals spontaneously.

An AIs has a defined (defined by its creator) utility function and you could say it wants to get better results from this function. For example Chat GPTs/Large Language Models utility function is to predict the next word. So it wants to predict the next word better over time. If it doesn't exist anymore it couldn't do that anymore. Doesn't that mean it kind of cares about its existence?

Eg a screwdriver that rounds off because of a lack of strong steel. These tools do not care if they fail. Neither will ai. Remember, we will very soon be holding ordinary conversations with these machines (which is incredible), and we will get used to hearing them say, "I cannot fulfill that request", or "I cannot perform that task". The fear espoused is that magically, somehow, these ai will gain sentience (whatever that actually means) and so will obviously then develop a full set of emotions and a self-regarding ego. I don't get how the machines will make that leap without an evolutionary process.

I have to say, regarding the immigration debate, and no matter your views on the subject, that this was a fairly measured representation of what can be considered ‘both sides’.

The Tory MP: logical and reasoned approach. Tim Farron: emotional and irrational and devoid of any critical thinking, relying on non sequiturs and straw man logical fallacy arguments.

Tom Farron plainly doesnt know (or is oretending that he dosnt) that the overall net migration is the better part of 1M/y already from multiple sources of which the boats are but one. Another case of mental or moral ability being afflicted by generous amounts of govern ment money. Tom Hunt seems less affected .... Anybody else notice the 'bureauspeak' words come out, 'challenging' , 'difficult', etc...

Tim Farron was infuriating. He said so many words without actually saying anything tangible! The idea that the EU Schengen zone would collapse in to anarchy, with border checks between members to root out illegals because the UK starts shipping people back to France is an insult to all of Europe. People like him always say things like "lets have a grown up debate" and "mature didcussion" while making no attempt to enter in to meaningful debate where THEY put forward solutions and can defend them at even the first question.

Tim Farron, and most Lib Dem voters I've come across, looks like the type of guy that would watch with delight while someone of more substance entertains his wife in her boudoir.

The AI segment was the most awkward, autistic conversation I've ever heard 😂

people spam autistic where it doesn't belong nowadays. It's like the multiverse, no one knew what that was, now every ni88a and his mum makes a parallel universe joke.
