I think part of the reason Elijah looks so surprised/shocked when he hears that Hayley was still holding out for that dance, is because that it means that she forgives him and isn’t angry for what he did #haylijah

@Sourabh Singh it's like when Captain America says Hail hydra in the elevator during endgame. It works within the story to move the plot forward. Fans of the comics would appreciate it, and it's genuinely an enjoyable moment Same thing here. Hayley isn't sure she'll ever see Elijah again, but some emotional conclusion for their relationship is needed. It's an emotional conclusion for the fans. Elijah's reaction is what sells it. Only he and the audience understand the significance of the words being said. It's honestly a perfect little conclusion to the love story. It's a little hope (PUN NOT INTENDED), after all the heartbreak.

I think Elijah and Hayley had chemistry but I don’t think their relationship was good for either one of them. When I saw episode three of season five, I wanted Elijah and Antoinette to be endgame so much. She was the kind of woman he needed: mature, sophisticated but also fun and carefree. He was happy with her and happy, period. And, I don’t think it was just because he couldn’t remember anything.
