This video is part of our online series: Remembering Julian Bream. The New York Guitar Festival invited some of our favorite artists to reflect on the life and musical legacy of the Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist and lutenist Julian Bream, who died at his home in Wiltshire, England on August 14, 2020, at the age of 87.
Eliot Fisk was the last direct pupil of Andres Segovia, and the founder of the guitar department at the Yale School of Music. This means his long, prolific career is a bridge between the guitar’s most iconic figure and the generations of gifted musicians coming from that program today. His collaborators have included Bill Frisell and Paco Pena, among many others.
In this video, Eliot performs arrangements of several keyboard sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti.
The NYGF and the performing artists are asking viewers to donate to MusiCares.

I saw Eliot perform decades ago, it was wild... the guy as chops for days. He also sounds like he rushes a lot, and he might have the strongest attack on a classical guitar I've ever heard... it sounds that way to me.

There is something about Eliot Fisk’s play I’ve always found intimately authentic.

@@paulobrificado8521 Yup. This is the absolute last time I'll bother to click and listen to his playing, too many times in the past I've just been left wondering why the hell he is still regarded as relevant. I must be a slow learner.

I saw Elliot Fisk and Julian Bream at the Eugene Oregon Hult Center, Silva Concert Hall In the late 1980s or 1990s. I don't remember which decade it was. I was impressed with Elliot Fisk's guitar playing more than I expected. When I saw Julian Bream, I have memories of seeing the top of his bald head as he bent over his guitar. I saw Christopher Parkening there too. In 1987 I had a ticket to see Andre Segovia there, but the rat died on me before I could see him. I have a vague memory of being in the Chester Pietka Music studio in Eugene OR around 1977, give or take, and a gentleman came in which had an air of sophistication about him. He picked up one of the guitars off the rack and played the popular Bach Bourrée in E minor. Then he played the same thing higher up on the fingerboard demonstrating the versatility of the guitar and, of course, his skill. It occurred to me decades later that this was quite possibly Julian Bream come to town waiting for his concert. This was not the same year in which I saw him that I mentioned above, so I assume he could have been in town more than once.

Im sorry. I don't understand why people still like this player in 21 century? . His sound/tone and attacks are so harsh, grumpy his playing and phrases so hectic so chop chop ? It's all so confusing? I don't get it?

Please be honest, few guitarists in the world can match his speed and extremely difficult fingerings. His soulful but rather raw playing is always very welcome to me, unlike the high pressure tonal academies of others.Julian Bream was also rather cut from the same cloth. Thank you Mr. Fisk for this wonderful chamber concert, by the way we met once in a S-Bahn to the Airport in Munich and took a photo together! I think back to that with pleasure! Good luck and continue to give us so much pleasure with your irrepressible playing.
