purpleshamrock17 agree! I was hooked on it all and gutted when I realised I need to wait to see what happens! It's so dark and such a powerful series. Everyone on it played their parts perfectly and we're so believable and convincing! **Spoilers ahead for anyone reading this who hasn't seen the she season*** Like the friendship with Ofwarren and how she started out as a normal girl the way you'd expect and after the whole thing of her eye being taken out and how you see her later in a really bad state of not being entirely there anymore you know? The innocence in her and how she tried to be happy despite everything that's happened to her was really what got me. She had her eye removed, her child taken from her, lied to about Warren leaving his wife for her, losing the baby again and trying to commit suicide. Yet even after that in the final episode she was still innocent and nice to everyone. It was very well made and I'm so excited for the next season!
purple Watch Natasha Richardson in the movie. Rape should look extremely painful and should hurt enough to make you scream, not look ashamed or blase, or stoic.
jui Spare me. Christians do not kill gay people, advocate sex with little girls, blow people up, or oppress women. It also helps when hoping to prove a point if you use a source that understands English enough to use it correctly.
Vicki Takacs Watch Taryn Manning in Orange is the New Black, season 4. Dissociation is very, very common in people who are systematically abused. ( sexually or otherwise). You lock down and freeze up. You make yourself numb and compartmentalize the incident into something that happened to someone else. Unfortunately it’s a very attractive habit to fall into, and the results are devastating in the long run.
One of the things I admired about The Handmaid's Tale was exactly as Elisabeth explained - They didn't make the rape scenes appealing - they were real. It was a "classy" (for lack of a better word) move on the director's/actor's/script writer's part. Also... Elisabeth Moss has a beautiful voice. :)
I really need actresses like Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia) to have a chance at tables. Her, Lorraine Toussaint, and others who are well known for playing supporting roles.
I would say a full round table with the whole cast ....because in the past interviews and panels, the journalists haven't been not even close to what the topics of the shows requires
She is looking at Nicole when she makes that face... she is shooting her a look I reckon. This was probably a conversation the two of them would have had based on the scenes Nicole had to shoot for Big Little Lies. I dont think its as bad as all you are suggesting.
That big moment of realisation when you put together the themes of The Handmaid's Tale and the religion that Elisabeth Moss practice... Maybe she's looking for that irony in life that we all crave for ? Who knows...
@@theoscarlessactress2748 Yeah they are. I don't understand the hatred for her because she is loyal to her religion. I thought living in this country meant religious freedom. She isn't hurting anyone more than any other religion. I actual studied Scientology and I agree with some of its teachings. I'm not a Christian but have but put my own religion together based on my personal beliefs.
Ariana King she a lousy actress I saw her in a movie called Chuck awful also I work on the project as well she a bit nasty as well and a Hollywood brat she's also a Scientologist as well when she was on radio on a local station she refused to answer questions about documentary film that was an HBO movie based on Scientology she still join this cult that break's up family her mother is one too she did not had to work hard to be an actress her mother push her into the business like Michael Jackson everything was given to her she became the breadwinner and now she's taking care of her mother who lives in California while she lives on 2nd Avenue in the village in New York City she got off Twitter when people found out she was a Scientologist and then decided to be on Instagram with a lot of people don't catch on to what she really is a Scientologist she prays Tom Cruise for his stupidity on the oprah Winfrey show if someone ask her about scientology she would throw a curveball she was a child star when she started out so she don't know what hardships is like and she never went to a school to learn acting but had enough money on what she earned while she was a child actress going into a college still supporting her mother who was a music teacher and her brother as well her farther was a jazz player he plays trombone also she didn't went to school like normal kids before she became famous her mother taught her or she have a special teacher the teach the daughter and the son a good actress huh she an old 33 year old Scientologist that's one of the reasons why nobody hardly care about her look on Instagram one person said she a marvelous actress too bad she is a Scientologist and I heard she got a divorce too why don't she marry Tom Cruise with that Elisabeth Moss must have blocked her
"The Handmaid's Tale", "Big Little lies" and "Feud: Bette and Joan" are great shows! I am sure "Top of the lake: China girl" will be wonderful as well. I love these actresses!
I'm not a Scientologist, in fact, I'm an atheist, and I also think Nicole has had waaaaaaaay too much Botox. She's a great actress, and is a beautiful woman, but she is a great example, same with Meg Ryan and a few others, of how fucking with your face can end up destroying it.
I was super drawn into the June Osbourne she portrayed, the emotions, the roller coaster, the ups and downs were fully executed with such talent. I really love it.
Twenty years ago, (1997), Elisabeth Moss and Michelle Williams played Jessica Lange's nieces in the film A Thousand Acres. They were very young at the time, but it was an indication of the talent necessary to be cast even in a very small part in a Jessica Lange film.
I feel as though the fact that Elisabeth Moss is a Scientologist she is able to draw on the experiences during takes on The Handmaid’s Tale. Maybe that’s how those who make it big in Scientology actually survive - they simply switch off entirely 😔 so sad
@@betulbo96 because she is divorced from Tom Cruise and she does not practice Scientology. So, she's a "supressive person", along with Katie Holmes and Leah Remini.
Doesn't the fact beautifully made up and dressed women are all sitting around a table and almost laughing about a rape scene make anyone cringe a little?
Nicole Kidman thanked "everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier".Gestational carrier.... that is so damn cold. Why is she even there? She creeps me out. There is so much left unanswered about her father and the statements made by Fiona Bartlett. It's all just so creepy...
Despite the fact that Elizabeth was raised into scientology, I don’t feel like she follows all of the traditional practices and thoughts on it. I’ve heard that if you’re raised into scientology, it’s very difficult to leave- But I don’t believe that someone like Moss would follow all of the more questionable practices in scientology. If there are things that I don’t know about, please tell and correct me.
there used to be full hour long posts at this page from these interviews- now they just run a bunch of clips- TRULY annoying. Bring back the full episodes!
I love the Handmaidens Tale and Big Little Lies for the reason that these shows are opening a reality. Nobody talks about how Gay & Lesbian persecute each other on looks and body, not fitting into the commercial tribe. It was punk back in the day, now it's perfect gay for straight people.
What a panel, Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, the great actress Jessica Lange. I hope directors will use older actresses instead of discarding them. I saw the original movie of Handmaiden’s with Faye Dunaway and Robert Duvall playing the childless couple who are also the power couple in the cult, but have only seen clips on RU-vid of the new series.
How ironic that she's part of a group of people who oppress other people and yet she is portraying a society where people are suppressed. Did you listen to the way she answered that first question? "How would one..." that sounds so detached.
Anyone else thinking about how weird it might have been for Nicole Kidman (Tom Cruise’s ex wife) and Elisabeth Moss (a devout Scientologist) being together in a room? Yikes... Poor Nicole.
idk leah Because Elizabeth Moss is a Scientologist. Nicole lost her two adopted children to Scientology when she split from Tom Cruise. They are forced to cut ties from defectors of Scientology and treat them as an enemy. A deep wound for Nicole, understandably.
Me too. Although there is no getting through to these people. They are severely brainwashed. They have to "see the light" by themselves. Only then can they be free from Scientology's control.
Eva Smith well first off it’s a best selling novel by Margaret Atwood, of a dystopian American run by Misogynistic men, who want to return to “traditional values”. Where women are basically here to be housewives. Unfortunately the pride and ego of these men won’t accept that it’s “their fault” things are the way they are, that perhaps their women aren’t baron and they’re just sterile. There’s a lot of utopian idealism and Old Testament bible references. Back in that time a “handmaid” was basically what we now know as a surrogate, however in HmT they’re a desperate, totalitarian and again dystopia that are trying to rebuild their society after “tragedy”, which then in turn they created this idea of “forced surrogacy” but use their half-hearted beliefs as a justification for their overall poor judgement and desperation. It’s quite a literary masterpiece that has won many awards, I’d put it right on the shelf with the likes of Clockwork orange, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, even modern day versions like under the dome, the hunger games, divergent or maze runner. But perhaps I just have a thing for Dystopian Novellas. Ha
Ashley D So basically how can someone write such a sick story, film such a sick story and most importantly enjoy such a story? The world has gone completely insane. Stories in movies, but especially TV series, are more and more darker, twisted and sicker and audiences just casually view because it's cool or interesting or so dark yeah. People are just getting more and more used to sick stuff, normal's just boring really. What will we be enjoying in 10 years when what we're watching now is the norm and therefore boring, what kind of torture will be the next step?
I can't help but feel like alot of series are now kind of normalizing these horrible things (like GoT, Narcos, House of Cards, ect). Like first time it was for shock value, and we keep watching until we're numb to it? I don't know....
It's so perverse how the decision is deliberately made to avoid _in vitro,_ and thus subject the women to this unnecessary horror. Imagine how life would be for the handmaids if that one thing were different. If they conceived through IVF, there would be no rape, and they would be pampered and honored and practically stars. The rape is not necessary at all, but it's the founding aim of this regime - not fertility, but violation.
Serai3 But even so, women should not be forced to be pregnant. If no kids are born, then okay w.e. Human race dies, but like that happens to all species in one way or another. We cannot control nature.
Three words : I H-A-T-E Serena !!!!!!! and all those wives who pin down the hands of other women each month whilst their husbands rape them . That society was a perfect utopia for the rich influential wives , they get to have slaves for the house chores ,and sex slaves to give them babies , they never would get problems with husbands due to lack of sex or infertility because they can just use other woman to do all that work for their husbands and they get to be the mistresses over all of them ....these wives and aunts make me sick to my core !!!!!!!!
Have any of the panel actually read the book? The book specifically describes the monthly ceremony as not being rape. As the character says “Nothing is happening that I didn’t sign up for.” The fact she probably has very little choice about participating is true of the three characters involved. None of the participants want to be there as Elizabeth Moss notes. The Commander would probably be deposed from his position, and killed if he persistently refused to attempt to impregnate his handmaiden. All three chose to participate, but no one is free in the society of Gilead
It's still rape though, it is just that the commander doesn't have the choice to. That's what makes the situation even more tricky. I only watched the show but it did came to my mind that Frederick and Selena are probably not willing to do it and also feel kinda traumatised by the whole thing but saying it's not rape hum... they could have thought of another way to transfer his sperm if they really wanted to.
I struggled with this line (“nothing is happening that I didn’t sign up for”) when I first read the book for school. And after a few more years of life experience I have come to realise that Offred is being sarcastic here - she didn’t willingly “sign up” for any involvement with Gilead. She is referring to the indoctrination the handmaids went through at the red centre. That they ended up handmaids because they are all fallen women of some kind; that they “chose” to commit sin, and therefore seal their fates as handmaids. So her saying this to herself (and the reader) during the ceremony is her describing her eternal punishment (or atonement) for her previous transgressions. Just because she accepts it (as part of her indoctrination) doesn’t mean she welcomes it.
