I watched the male actors' round table, waiting for them to bring up sexual harassment and pay inequality. I watched the directors' round table, waiting for them to ask about harassment and inequality. It never happened. Right from the start, the women are asked about these issues. These are not women's problems. They're industry issues. They're institutional failings. They're human problems. Why is The Hollywood Reporter only addressing gender issues with the actresses? Shame on you. I am grateful for these women sharing their experiences and opinions, but it's not their job to address these wrongs alone. Ask these questions to the leading men, directors, producers and studio heads.

well, that might be because they agreed to speak out about that subject primarily, then because the audience is more interested in the female point of view on this subject rather than the male opinion. Or they, the actresses themselves, requested it. However, I think is cute for you saying that men should speak and give more their opinion on this subject.

I read the different comments and I find myself waiting to also hear a certain topic confronted. I have feelings by this being the first and foremost question posed to this panel reduces them down to that being what they are good for instead of their amazing talent, skill and profession wealth of knowledge. At what point do we direct a specific topic to singular sex. I don’t argue that sexual harassment isn’t proportionally directed to women over men (of course men are affected and on the receiving end), but this gives me the same feeling as actress being asked on a red carpet what they are wearing or their relationship status vs a actor getting asked about a project or their role that they are there to celebrate. These are conversations and topics that need to be aggressively confronted and discussed, but I wonder why these comments are only first stated on this video apposed to being buried deep deep down on the male round tables. Is it reverse sexism, is this what feminism is, is only one panel supposed to discuss it, is the commentary only posted to the question list that is imposed by the host?...etc...etc.

I don’t think his (seemingly) lack of recognition of MJB’s presence at the table was intentional. I think she is just quieter and more reserved than the other ladies in this situation, thus said, she didn’t interject as often as the others did because they felt more comfortable than she did. It seemed as though, at times throughout this interview, it was hard for any 1 person to get a word in because most of them are very confident and had a lot more to say, or should I say, they felt more compelled and comfortable expressing their opinions and sharing their stories. I got the impression she felt a little intimidated, not due to race, but because all the other woman have a lot more acting experience than she does. This is not to say that she has less talent but less acting‘notches in her belt’ than her peers at that table. This is not a derogatory opinion against MJB - she is hugely successful within the entertainment industry in general, particularly since she can not only act but she is an incredibly talented performer as well, something the rest of the ladies at this table cannot claim.

Mary J Blige has been acting since 1998 and has done plays and guest starring roles. So ignoring her was completely ridiculous. Jessica Chastain should've moderated this. This is just the role that has placed Mary J in a better spotlight but she's been an actress for some time now and has a valid voice. Lets not forget that Mary J Blige was originally supposed to play Nina Simone but had to drop due to financial reasons and the role went to Zoe Saldana. Don't short change her. New moderator for sure.
@tian_obia
@tian_obia 5 лет назад
How was she being ignored or excluded in the dialogue between the actresses and the moderator who facilitates the conversation between all them. She made some very awesome points on all topics and was able to share plenty during the interview, if one were to think about how some of the other 6 people at the table were not sharing as much then you'd see that she wasn't being singled out. Maybe she didn't relate to and want to share as much cuz she was around only white people and was led by a male moderator. I feel that should change but she wasn't intentionally being left out of the conversation by everyone else. Like is a classroom, if you want to share you have to speak up in the conversation
@BlackGirlMarvel
@BlackGirlMarvel 5 лет назад
@@tian_obia but it's not a classroom. It's moderated. It's up to that person to direct the questions. I mean I agree that it was weird that she was the last one to speak only because Jessica decided to ask her about that topic. @@tian_obia I never stated he was a racist just that he wasn't great at what he does. Watching it, to me, he didn't pay her any mind. He pretty much called out everyone to answer a question he asked but Mary J Blige. It wasn't until Jessica asked for her point of view that he started to include her in the conversation.

@@BlackGirlMarvel No true I know you didn't call him a racist or think that but some other people do and am curious why people think that he singled her out when its a white male moderator who didn't engage with her until later in the interview. I agree that he should've been better in general or that they should've just brought in a good female interviewer but he certainly wouldn't have gone throughout the whole interview without asking her questions or having her engage in the discussion. Alls I'm saying is that some of the issue was him not giving her a chance to speak until later in the interview (poor job on him) but some of it was on Mary and any of the actresses to engage with each other in a voluntary discussion.

I think it's really shameful that Mary J. Blige was not invited into the conversation until 7 minutes into this video, and that it wasn't even by the moderator, especially considering that she is one of the only women at the table who has admitted she was abused, she has more to add to this conversation than even the rest do. It's also shameful that she's the only woman of color in this round table, we are at a point where lack of diversity cannot be overlooked. This is a great conversation to have, but you should pick your moderators more consciously and choose your subjects more wisely.

Or more to the point, an interviewer who OBVIOUSLY cares about women's issues! The conversations are more lively and free-flowing when it's a female interviewer. Because they're talking about these difficult (but necessary) topics, but this man is approaching this like it's a class and it's mandatory recitation time. I mean, some of those actresses have probably made more money from 1 project than that interviewer will make in his career. Why don't they talk about that pay gap? I feel like the host could have eased into the conversation about sexual abuse. Ask about their roles and ACTING first, and then steer the conversation into that. Women are always expected to speak for all women's issues when the people who should be put under pressure is MEN. Why ask them if things are gonna change? The one's who have to change are men who benefit from this system, even if they are not perpetrators themselves. Humble opinion.
@TheSlodfj5
@TheSlodfj5 5 лет назад
First, that's not a "humble" opinion. If it were, you wouldn't accuse "MEN" as in all men in the industry. Second, women aren't expected to speak for all women's issues. They are taking it upon themselves to speak for all women's issues. Third, It's sexist to say "MEN" should be put under pressure because as individuals we can only control our own actions. If a man wants to sexually abuse, assault, or rape a woman he will do it no matter what happens. Which doesn't mean we as human beings shouldn't do anything about it, but it does mean we should have a civil discussion about this subject together and come up with solutions to minimize the possibility of it happening again.

Your comment about it "happening again?" - - > it's happening *right now:* - - > every 4 minutes a woman is raped in the world by a man. (And please don't argue this statistic with me, or ask where is the study backing it up? Look up the multitude of studies yourself, the evidence is overwhelming. But.... Can we agree that no matter what the statistic is specifically, that this number is unacceptable? Can we agree, you agree in writing, that a *single woman or child* being raped by a man is incontrovertibly unacceptable? Can we start there? That seems to me to be unarguable. If it is not incontrovertible that a man raping someone is a bad thing, if that is even a question that exists in your mind, what does this say about men? - Watch the TED TALK if you are a man and you are reading this and you are not putting your hands on your bowed head and sobbing for your gender.) This isn't a "few bad apples," this isn't the occasional exception, a "one-off." This isn't something that we try and "minimize the possibility of it happening again." - - *We can't "minimize the possibility of something happening again" *if we can't get it to EVEN STOP HAPPENING in the first place.*- - People say that sexism is no longer a real problem. @shannonmcstormy5021

I should add a quote from the recommended TED TALK at the beginning of my previous post, illustrating some of my points above: " Why is domestic violence still a big problem in the US and all over the world? What's going on? Why do so many men abuse physically, emotionally, verbally, and other ways, the women and girls, and the men and boys, that they claim to love? What's going on with men? Why do so many adult men sexually abuse little girls and boys? Why is that a common problem in our society and all over the world today? Why do we hear over and over again about new scandals erupting in major institutions like the Catholic Church or the Penn State football program or the Boy Scouts of America, on and on and on? And then local communities all over the country and all over the world. We hear about it all the time. The sexual abuse of children. What's going on with men? Why do so many men rape women in our society and around the world? Why do so many men rape other men? What is going on with men? And then what is the role of the various institutions in our society that are helping to produce abusive men at pandemic rates?" - Jackson Katz

On one particular night Mary J. Blige was a performing guest. She saw the club promoters and guests mistreating me and she immediately interceded on my behalf. She is an amazing person. This happened thirty years ago and I have never forgotten her strength and kindness and I never will.

that point towards the end where the interviewer directly addressed Mary J Blige and said her name and everybody else around the table reacted..."omg. he said her name.finally! " #gold

Actually Saoirse said to Allison, "I can't think of anyone, what do I say?". Jennifer then makes a joke saying "Just say me", Saoirse looks over at her and laughs, then Emma mouths to Saoirse, "Say her, say her."

Emma and Mary J's faces when the host mistook Brooklyn for the 16th century movie should be in the Meme Hall of Fame.

Watching this is 2/2020 and Thank you Jessica Chastain for including Mary J Blige into the conversation because Matt COMPLETELY and almost rudely overlooked her! No clue why maybe he was waiting to involve her when he got to the newbie section or the music to actor transition but she's apart of the industry and I really wanted to hear what she had to say. So again thank you Jessica.

Emma's look to him after he said that should be freeze-framed and made into a meme.

After Saorsi spoke for the first time I was expecting the interviewer ask Mary J Blige something. However, he massively ignored her. Hats off to Jessica who instantly reacted and included her. Love her!

Mary J Blige saying that she hates recordings of her own voice is the most relatable thing ever. I love her.

I love Emma and Jennifer referring to each other as John, it's an inside joke they have because they had the same "stalker". You can watch the story about it on their interview with W magazine.

I've just realized I've also been pretending to be a tomboy for the last couple years because of this. When you show your femininity men and boys will treat you different, and mostly not in a respectful way. Not in a way that makes you feel positively valued. EDIT: Serious actors are some of the most Empathetic people out here.

Marlena Sien you’re very clearly indoctrinated. So sad young women think that femininity, a weapon actually used to hold you down, will bring you high regard and power. Femininity fades, superficial beauty fades within a blink of an eye and all your left with is a vapid shell. Femininity is not natural for any species, so why would we humans, specifically women, be the exception?.. because we, women, are not the exception, it isn’t baked in our brains to like makeup, high hills, subduction, dresses and all things “girly”, we’re deliberately socially engineered through countless of hours and years of indoctrination into being that unnatural way.

I love how Emma Stone stands up for all women receiving equal pay than just actresses. I love her compassion.

Not many comments about Allison Janney. She has some serious acting chops. Academy Award, BAFTA, Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG winner. Also 2 Tony award nominations.

She's brilliant. The fact that she wasn't spoken to longer is a missed opportunity. She's one of the, if not, the most intelligent woman and the best actress of the bunch. Big disappointment that the woman on the left side of the table didn't get a chance to speak more.

Mary j Blige is one of the most seasoned and successful artists apart of this conversation and should have been acknowledged by the host sooner, Jessica literally had to do his job for him.

I truly admire Jennifer Lawrence for all her opinions and work for others in health and education. Specially when she spoke about pay gap and gender issues and people mocked about her comments bc she was not talking for herself, she was talking for others
