She's wonderful! Ok, it's not the only way to play the role & she's never an 'everyday' artist (the word pointing is both illuminating & irritating, depending on one's mood or frame of mind). But compared to Schwarzkopf, most other interpreters seem trivial. Barely interpreters at all, in fact. And in 61 the voice was still in great shape.
She was the best Marchallin, aber wusste nicht wie zu singen, kann man hören when Sie versucht beim studieren im Masker zu singen und auf die Bühne nicht so oft, darum ist es so lange gut gegangen!

I agree, in two ways. 1. The Marschallin is not middle-aged. She is in her 30's, and will have more lovers. But they won't be 17! 2. Schwarzkopf puts so much anger into a scene that is more rueful than bitter.
