On this episode of Point of Relation, Thomas is joined by the author of the New York Times bestseller, On Our Best Behavior, and the host of the podcast “Pulling the Thread”, Elise Loehnen. They discuss what she calls the ‘cultural shadow’ of women - the ideas and behaviors that women have been socialized and conditioned to reject - and how women can embrace their complicated totality instead of repressing their authentic selves.
Elise’s recent book examines women’s social conditioning through the lens of the “seven deadly sins”. She and Thomas explore the trap of “goodness” for women and how the standards imposed on them lead to harmful repression, inequality, and resentment.
Elise stresses that people of all genders are harmed by unfair standards that are propagated through social power structures, and posits that we can free ourselves from these constricting gender roles by reframing our thinking and integrating our shadows instead of projecting them onto others.

I love your work. For years, I've wanted to write a book on the seven cardinal sins and seven virtues, realising that those polarities and shadow pivoted my ego awareness and that opened my spiritual awareness. Thank you! So called "toxic feminity" affects all of us including men and boys raising children in this emotional ether is so limiting and traumatic. The disconnect from the natural and free. The heaviness of shame in the body accelerating the nervous system and freezing it. Thank you both for leaning into this.

Her book is one of the most important books I have read. It illuminates the conditioning behind so much, if not all maladies we see in the medical system. I work with anger as a doorway to freedom. Envy.. is based in a patriarchal society based in scarcity. There has always been enough for everyone. So much boils down to feeling what we feel so we can heal. Anger is not only “what do I need” but also “what did I not get”. Intergenerational trauma keeps us quiet.

Great conversation and very good points Thomas and Elise! ❤ In my experience, aggression is more prevalent in masculine cultures because, for most people, the cultural role models are fighters and the language also has different phrases, such as e.g. as "join the battle or fight." This is just one of the observation that I have in regards to the shadow work. When a person identifies with non violent heroes, the way of being can also can be more gentle. Either way, it is not an easy journey but worthwhile. Thank you so much! Be blessed!

Healthy aggression/entitlement vs. protective anger.. from others or from softer more vulnerable emotions. Emotions only last 90 secs when we let them.
