Thank you very much good sir! There's a lot to do, but the problem is you've got this amazing galaxy, endless possibilities, all stifled because the designer went to the Kim Il Sung school of sociology.

someone should just make a campaign in the game cause right now there are so many mechanics that are new that i want to try and see if they hold up as a good challenge. Sort of like "can this new wright brothers..flying thing... fight?" and then dogfighting became a thing. basically i want to actually do things to win

Elite has a vast galaxy that gives endless options for exciting and rewarding gameplay, but instead they managed to make as little use of the vasteness and focus most tasks on mindeless milk runs or similar things that become repetetive quickly. The weird mission board, the Conflict Zones were battles don't seem to matter as they reset themselfes, milk runs that exist forever as well as many other aspects that are flawed make a game with endless potential kinda tideous. I often take long breaks from Elite and find myself coming back to it after some time to check out what has changed, but most of the time I am loosing interest again within a couple of hours due to the fact that the underlying gameplay is not really improving. I do like Elite, but at times it is very hard to find motiviation to play it. Anyway, really looking forward to the next Episode! Great stuff!

I agrree with you. Theres so much cool stuff with intercepting players robbing here and there but it all is kind of meaningless. There is no real player influence.... imagine you could fight over spacestations. Build up empires and control space to gather its resources. That would be so cool... but its all left out.

Thank you very much good sir! I totally agree, it's so enjoyable and only ruined by a duality that eats itself, on the one hand it says 'be you, do whatever you want!' and on the other 'Ha, what are you trying to do, you need this, this, and that, otherwise you will have a miserable time'. So you have people just doing endless milk runs to gain the exact same things as everyone else, uniformity ensues. It's a pity, because with a little more attention and a little less hands on manipulation of the galaxy it could be so great. Without going too far into a future video, take engineering, imagine buying a car then spending months learning how to tweak the engine to go a little faster when you could simply find someone who has invested time in those skills and pay them to do it? It doesn't make sense on that level, it's like the people who designed the civilisation/society element had it described to them by a member of a south pacific cargo cult.
@Vulpinaut

@@Laobi Somebody actually looked at the engineering gameplay loop, saw that *quitting the game and going back to the menu repeatedly* is the recommended strategy for using it and decided "yes, this is okay. @@Laobi Not only are you spending months to tweak the engine, it has to be done with commodities everyone else seems to have in small amounts but you can’t seem to buy them anywhere in the entirety of the galaxy! Nope, not even future-amazon carries that!” So it would be like trying ram other cars off the road or being some mechanical vulture at crash sites to pilfer off the parts you need but can’t buy anywhere. “Where the hell did everyone else get these components?!”

The trick, I believe, in enjoying Elite Dangerous, is doing what you want and paying no attention to what the game is trying to steer you into. ED can become a painful, joyless, grind if you do what the devs intended. I spent a few weeks outside the "civilized" regions exploring because that is what I wanted to do. When i came back, I got some money and no sense of advancement or value. After a few days back in "civilization" trying to behave like a good ED citizen, I pointed my ship towards no where and I haven't been back in a habitated system in a years. Its a good place to explore. Its a terrible place to get a proper sense of accomplishment. More than most games, you have to find what works for you in ED. There is no joy in "winning the game". Great to see your keen insights and razer wit being used in the greater world. Looking forward to more :)
@Laobi
@Laobi 3 года назад
Thank you very much good sir! You are totally correct, I just see so much opportunity if they only added a few things that 1 or 2 people could work on in the background. It's not so much progression, but the way elements are linked that have no place being linked. There's no room for emergent gameplay or non developer driven evolution, it promises the galaxy, but kind of delivers North Korea on a galactic scale. I love it, but they're so close to getting it right.

"Its a good place to explore. Its a bad game.. with good graphics and sometimes.. randomly generated terrain... its not even a game. Its just good assets and a camera... people should have ditched the game the first chance they got. its not a game. I remember chasing 'explorer' Elite rank as an early target but because of the Boom Data delivery missions that I used to rank up with both the Feds and the Empire, I accidentally hit Trade Elite first. I've had discussions about this before: I believe Elite rank should require *new discoveries* ranging from systems to habitable or water worlds, to Thargoid ruins, to any number of things, but only if you're the Discoverer. So, arbitrarily, discover three new systems and log their planets, discover a new Lagrange, and discover a habitable world could be three tasks you receive when attempting Elite rank, no Elite until those are finished. I don't know, I never really thought farther on it than that.

I didn't even know you could get exploration rank from passenger missions, I have elite rank in exploration, and I haven't done 1 passenger mission, I actually explored and was the 1st person to discover planets and map many systems. The correct way to get exploration rank IS to explore and map planets and then sell the data when you return. Now I have only been playing for 7 months, maybe they changed something before I started playing? But still GREAT VID! Subbed :)
@Laobi
@Laobi 2 года назад
Thank you very much sir! Neither did I until I tried it (on both counts). Being the first, perhaps turning in routes with refueling etc., should be the only way to rank it. Selling the data seems fine if you're the first, but after the first it seems forced. Even if the rank is achieved through selling of data I imagine this: Some jaded old public servant sitting in the back office of a station with a barely functioning computer. 'What have you got for me? Oh great, another scan of Orion, well done _explorer_ Now, what does the list say?..oh here's your 20,000 credits'. It's a bit like being a mall santa.

peed myself watching this. I'm a founder in Elite and I'm elite in trading and exploration but I agree with you as it's mind-boggling how they work the ranks out. I've been deadly for months even though I do a lot of bounty hunting in my fully engineered Corvette. It never seems to get close to Elite Rank.
@Vulpinaut
@Vulpinaut 3 года назад
It takes at minimum 1,780 kills to reach Combat Elite. It wouldn't be Elite if everything didn't take five times as long as it should for literally no reason. Apparently Thargoids give more combat XP but that also requires making a specialty AX ship and trucking all the way out to the goddamn Witch Head.
@Laobi
@Laobi 3 года назад
Thank you very much sir! That's the issue, there are just these silly short cuts to things that are unrelated to the achievements, you could become elite at combat by simply pew pewing the easiest ships in the game over and over again. It should be difficult to gain elite in anything, but not grindy.
@MaheerKibria
@MaheerKibria 3 года назад
Maybe this is how exploration used to work. It doesn’t work that way at least not when I tried it. What worked for me was actually mapping planets, scanning systems. I wish it was as easy as going between robigo mine and sirius atmospherics. It did wonders for grinding imperial rank. But jack shit for my exploration rank
@Laobi
@Laobi 2 года назад
Thank you very much sir! I think they've allowed a few things short circuit ranking, the big problem is tying profit to ranking, this is also an issue with combat ranking. The result is that someone who makes more profit doing something progresses faster in rank than someone who works hard at it. So you end up with people ranking elite in 12-24 hours if they find a profitable milk run or an area stacked with high bounty outlaws. I love the game, but it shouldn't work that way.
@CameronMiller

Getting explorer rank by grinding bus driver rp at Robigo Mines is a choice. Feel free to go find new stuff and explore like you want to. I got Elite doing just that. I'd recommend going to some far away place like Sag A or Beagle Point or hell, even just Colonia and honk and FSS every system and then DSS every Earth Like World, Water World, and Metal Rich world you come accross. One trip (even the colonia one) and you'll be Elite assuming you survive to turn in your data. You'll be wealthy too. BTW... the passengers at Robigo Mines do not want to go to a nav beacon... they want to go to a tourist beacon. Anyway, fly safe commander! o7
@Laobi
@Laobi 2 года назад
Thank you very much sir! You're absolutely correct about the choice. However, I don't think it's a choice that should exist. The issue is the linking of profit to systems like exploration and combat. It would be much more interesting if you had to discover new worlds and chart systems unheard of in the bubble. Even if you don't circumvent (read cheat) it like I did, doing a long trip and bringing back data that presumably others have previously supplied is a little like being told you're the first by the town bike. I love the game, let's be honest, it's the only non-ponzi space sim out there, but I feel they could make it a whole lot more interesting by changing the economic model (a player economy with interesting pitfalls in more repressive systems and indeed other interesting pitfalls in systems that are completely laissez faire. The big first step for me would be to unlink the economy from the ranking system with the exception of trade. Of course yes, the tourist beacon, thank you.
@antonbatura8385
@antonbatura8385 3 года назад
I found exploration to be the best aspect of the game for me. I usually reverse my opinion around the time I reach the galactic core. Then it's the neutron highway back to the bubble. I never drove the space bus, I got my elite by farming the neutron star clouds way up above the galactic plane. You might see my name as the first discoverer on quite a few of them up there. Everything you say about game mechanics is true, though.
@Laobi
@Laobi 3 года назад
Thank you very much good sir! I really enjoyed exploration until I found what I suspect (I could be wrong here) is that all endeavours are linked to a price rather than skill or experience. So, because bus driving pays great money it's more rewarding to exploration than exploration, I suspect the same may apply to combat, it's an easy fix, which is why it pisses me off so much.

This is the game where people complained loudly when the 'pause' function was removed. An online game in real-time. I'm triple elite from the days when it took literally forty hours of trade grind to upgrade from a Type 6 to a Type 7, so I've got a few hours in this godforsaken game. Some of the design and gameplay decisions are ridiculous. It was like they desperately wanted a pretty version of the 1984 original, and in creating it they managed to ignore decades of experience in online game development. It's like the devs don't play the game. Anyway, I'm glad you are doing this series and will order the appropriate shipment of lubricant for the next instalment. My life will be on hold until you tell us exactly what you think of the economy.
@Laobi
@Laobi 3 года назад
Thank you very much good sir! I guess that's the overarching point of what I'm trying to say, it rewards mindless grind as much and sometimes more than the actual pursuit of a goal or task, and it wouldn't take very much to change it. The economy is coming, I think towards the end of the series as it feeds into everything else, and not in the way an economy should.

I didn't realise you could get exploration rank through Robigo. I got my elite Exploration rank by heading out to Beagle Point via the relatively unexplored Beta and Delta quadrants. I also sold the exploration rata when I got back to all the people you need to gain rep with to unlock the permit systems where the various engineers live. I still haven't done the engineer grind though other than engines and FSDs. I'm not a huge fan of combat in Elite (been spoiled too much by DCS) unless it's popping Thargoids with my mates, which is great. Although with the introduction of carriers mining's pretty great. I find it's just engaging enough to be interesting while still being able to watch Netflix at the same time and it isn't a terrible way to spend an evening. But I'm weird and used to multibox miners on EVE.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the lacklustre biologicals, although perhaps you're not an Odyssey player? For a galaxy that's drive so much by procedural generation it's a shame the planet life is so hand-crafted and artificial. I can suspend disbelief to an astonishingly sad amount, but landing on a planet with life and finding only two or three species is too much even for me. In reality, when self-replicating chemistry develops on a planet, that planet would be covered in a layer of shite within years. Large, multicellular life? Off your nut to see that just sitting by itself. Braben didn't just screw the pooch, the dog's still hanging off in front of him howling for dear life.

Thank you very much sir! I did one about 6 years ago, but I was a lot more charitable then than I would be now. I also had flu when I recorded it. I may revisit. Incidentally I got my sign off from an interesting mail I received in reaction to that video, it was 100s of pages of copy pasta 'go fuck yourself', I loved it.

Thank you sir! If I can do it you could sit your cat in front of the PC for 22 hours and on your return he'll be elite in exploration.
