@@barking_mad6649 then you would have a much better reason to have space legs, since now you would be able to walk on inside your station. the problem is that odyssey doesn't add anything to the core experience of the game, it's like a different game attached to the original game. it would be great later on when we have more mechanics that could interact with it.
@@danilooliveira6580 Doesn't' add anything? Like the rest of the game it needs refinement. Exobiology is now a success and all they had to do really was increase rewards. Tweaks to gameplay rewards and progression and meaningful experiences. Im glad that this updated is focus on space and ships though.
@@jaroddunbeck5893 read the rest of my comment, please. it doesn't add anything to the core experience, it feels like a different game attached to the original game. if you don't get odyssey the only thing you lose is the ability of playing a mid to low quality shooter. it's meaningless to the game as a whole. if you had the ability to walk inside your ships, stations, and interact with NPCs, like X4 and SC, on the other hand, it would be a lot more meaningful.
Gonna be a long time before we expand that far (Formorian Frontier), but I know exactly what I want to build and where. There’s a system called Hypatia’s Lighthouse, would love to build a starport there called Pharos Station. Feels like they’d need to bring back player faction creation for all of these new systems, no?
It’s weird seeing Frontier starting to care about Elite again. I’d love to know what changed at frontier. I genuinely hope it’s not too late and that we can make elite great again.
I think its time to go back to Elite. I thought Star Citizen would be my game but I cannot stand the bugs and crashes. Think its time to come home to Elite
Hearing SC is still a buggy mess still makes me sad. I quit playing years ago and thought if I waited a few years I’d try again. Has it gotten any better recently with updates this year?
This is literally what I have had dreams about back when I was first playing odessey missions! With a couple more large features, elite could make itself the greatest space game without a question!
I stopped playing ED when it shut down consoles. But I did migrate my account to PC and I may start playing again with the system colonization update. I've always said they needed a terraforming mechanism for players.
Heh, you made a video last October asking what players wanted to see in the game and this is very similar to what I and a couple of others hoped for! Very cool to see this and it will definitely bring me back to the game.
This will make Deep Space Exploration, tremendously easier. Alot of players already use Fleet Carriers in a web across the galaxy, so having stations dotted in-between will make refueling the carriers easier
They said you could daisy-chain colonized star systems to reach far. I think we'll be able to create a grid of support systems across the galaxy eventually. I imagine it could eventually make STAR and DSSA carriers obsolete.
Didn't have "Frontier developing something potentially fun for Elite" in my 2024 bingo card, what a pleasant surprise. Hope they don't screw up making it a player group thing, since there is more than enough space in... space.
Perhaps you're merely being short-sighted. It'll be a pre-grind-fest for a larger grind-fest for some end-game perpetual grind that unlocks more grind. They're not ones to pussy foot about when it comes to a spot of tedium 🤌
I am really pleased to see Elite getting some love this year. A while back I was wondering if the game was ever going to bounce back. I have started playing again recently and I must say, the engineering rebalancing and general optimization improvements have been very welcome. I am having great fun raiding settlements as you no longer need to grind so much in order to upgrade your gear.
I came back during the sixth Titan, and had a really fun couple of weeks. The Engy grind got decimated during that week, and in hours I had G5 full in every type.
I am *cautiously* optimistic. It sounds good on paper, but... it's FDev we are talking about. They would find a way to make eating chocolate a boring grind and call it "gameplay". We have to live and see.
It's just another BS time grind to make a new system connected to the bubble. It has all the same assets as the thousands of other systems. It's pointless really.
Sounds promising. I miss ED, and I was sad to leave it when Frontier stopped supporting us console players. Glad to hear new stuff is still being done for the game.
Your sacrifice made this all possible. Sad it had to be this way, but you have to admit the franchise is better off. I appreciate you, and all the other console commanders. Perhaps we'll see you someday on the pc-side. Until then, o7 commander.
I think the only reason they're starting to give 2 cents about ED is that they see the new features that SC is bringing into their own game. But, they still need to make major changes to keep players interested in the game, have a few new ships won't do it or a space station.
This is heading in the direction I originally wished for Elite - something like "EVE Online light" background and player economy setup and first person flying ships. I am certainly going to dust off the joystick and pedals and poke my head back into Elite to have a look around.
It's enough to pique interest. I expect it's going to be CG scale, though. Prior station builds have been, including the scale hacks as FDev dramatically misestimate player abilities and interest.
@@afaxmachine5045 Could be a combo of '1st discovery' and credits. 10 billion to hire the construction ship and associated crew and materials to come build the station, rather than delivering a million tonnes of x and y. I agree with OP though, it needs to be solo accessible, whatever the mechanic.
Elite doesn't really have big clans and organisations like some other games. Carriers were originally intended to be Clan owned before being charged to be owned by individual players. I imagine this will be the same.
oh, i actually love the looks of the Cobra V, it looks enough like the older cobra's to still be recognizable, but it also looks new and kinda makes me think of a space stealth bomber
The one single thing I have always wanted in E:D is player colonization and station building. If they nail this, it'd make a lil dream come true for me!
it would be really cool if we could colonize far away systems in a middle of nowhere and develop them over time. Just imagine independent societies of players that you could visit while exploring galaxy.
Now that we know this was an intended gameplay feature, it puts a lot more perspective on how things went down with Odyssey's development. I'm certainly glad they were able to survive through that trainwreck long enough to reach this milestone.
Players having the ability to build stations in empty systems will be a game changer, especially if the stations you build can be made to earn you credits. I would also imagine that the stations you build could also be attacked and a destroyed by other players. This station building feature would made venturing into the black far more interesting because of player bases that could be located in them - apart from just having bases and stations in the Bubble.
It's finally a good direction to introduce those features... although a bit late compared to other games (I won't give names here) but it's better late than never... One of the reasons I've stopped playing ED aside from the endless grinding mentality, is that me personally I'm busy with another game doing just that, bases and orbital stations building and managing and influencing the life of a planet or moon and eventually the system where I operate with my actions as a player... I'd love to see something similar in ED as well because I really used to love this game...
Elite is my favorite game and the one that I spent the most hours in, by far. I got into it on XBox and it doesn't make sense for me to build a PC, so I've not played for a few years now. I missed the ability to transfer my save to PC so even if I did get a PC I can't imagine finding the time to accomplish all of the engineering and wealth that I did on console. However, if there were significant improvements made as discussed here, I might be inclined to start a fresh game on PC. Even if it were base building mechanics similar to Starfield, that would be awesome.
You can still transfer your account, and they give you a free copy of Horizons. Google "Elite Commander Console Migration" You get to keep all your stuff and continue the same save.
I transferred recently. I use Geforce Now and stream it to the TV while using a controller (with wireless keyboard at hand). Bought Odyessy for £6. It's great!
Yo, i moved from console about 4 months ago, only thing i lost is the reputation with the factions in the game. Everything else is transferred from console to PC, all the engineering modules and ships, and materials. Also the fleet carrier will need to be decommissioned from console version and you will get the money back and you can buy a new one on PC. So not sure where you get your will loose everything. You lose 3 things, faction reputation, fleet carrier which needs to be decommissioned, and your AI crew. Other than that everyone else is same….
This is an exciting development. I've always thought Elite Dangerous needed more interactivity and player-driven narrative. This could potentially bring that to the game, if it's well-implemented.
Absolutely! This is great! I stopped playing regularly a couple years ago because I felt I’d seen it all. I might start playing right now so that I can build up credits, my assumption is that a station will cost somewhere in the 5 billion credit range.
They've needed to do this. 99%+ of the galaxy is still unexplored let alone occupied. If every active player had a thousand systems it wouldn't make a scratch in the space available to expand.
I did not expect that to be honest and I am very, very positively surprised. It's been almost two years that I logged into Elite the last time, but damn, that stuff is certainly bringing me back. Even if the colonization feature is still somewhere in the future (and we all know FDev's delays), I'm eager to get back into the cockpit.
No wayyyyy. I’m very hyped, I hope they add atmospheric planets. I’ve always thought that they don’t even have to put earth like worlds I just wish they have full atmosphere like life less water worlds
I would not get my hopes up for atmospheric planets. It could be very demanding and who knows if they would be able to make it happen. Engine could be limiting factor even.
@@likilike501 your rightttt, idk it’s just something I hope for, cause it doesn’t seem to demanding other than colouring the sky and adding more terrain differences. Since they’d be barren it would only require that. Ik it’s a bit silly but having the option would be nice u know?
@@likilike501 It's not limited at all. A water world would be no different than what we have already. That's probably why they don't waste time doing it.
@@anakinjovanus1135Keep that hope alive, I mean I can’t see a reason as too why wouldn’t let us just land on atmospheric planets outside the bubble as they wouldn’t have too design huge cities on them as we would be colonising them ourselves.
When my brother and I took a trip out towards the rim of the galaxy, we kept finding awesome planets and systems that we would have loved to set up bases or colonies on. Would be cool if you could build way out there, I guess we'll see!
It would be cool if once you've built your way there you could kind of cut off the chain you made to get there and have an independent little bubble somewhere
Colonizing outwards from the bubble, we won't be able to colonize systems way out in the rim. They made that clear during the stream. Maybe eventually we'll get there, they haven't given details on how far or close to the bubble we need to be.
I hope the colonization ship carries a group of the controlling minor faction from the system in which the colonization ship was paid for (and this can be done in any occupied system) thus, minor factions actually have a way to expand into previously unoccupied territories.
It makes in-universe sense that FDL would built a new hull to take advantage of all the tech developments of the Second Thargoid War (supercruise, Guardian tactical tech, etc). The type will probably be a 'jack of all trades' hull that can be rigged as a corsair, an explorer, a trader and maybe even a mining prospector for all the many legacy fans of the game who remember the original. FWIW, I would have called the model the 'King Cobra' but that's just me.
I think it will be the top yier powerplay reward. You'll unlock the colonization ship and get the privilege to colonize in the name of Mahon, Duvall, or whoever you pledged to.
That's a good idea, but from what they said, you colonise the system first and if players want they can push the powers to come there, so the colonisation is probably not originated from powers. Better : you colonise it in your own name ! (if I got it right)
All these new updates have me coming back to the game again. Frontier have surprised me I thought the game was going to dwindle and fade into obscurity but this is all amazing news.
This feels like this could breathe new life into to the Galaxy, new landmarks to find, maybe new grind methods for materials or credits, but I would definitely be interested to see if they could potentially expand further into base building with this.
Last time I was excited was for Fleet Carriers, and that was so over promised and under delivered that i moved Elite to my "dead games" category on Steam next to Hawken and Loadout.
Thanks for the update Ant. Very interesting... Interesting enough to get me back into the game maybe. Sounds a lot like Elite is getting some love again which is great to see and about 4 years overdue. I do wonder what has changed over at Fdev to cause this.
Finally something to work towards instead of an arbitrary title. Little bit of Solar Clipper dark side station building would go a long way in the game to add variety.
Spent a good amount of time out of the bubble collecting biological samples. On my way back I saw a cool planet and went down to check it out. Goofed and smashed into the side of a canyon trying to fly through it like Maverick. Lost everything
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigations determined the cause of the mishap was a combination of pilot error and alcohol was thought to have been involved :)
Very interesting to see both Elite and star citizen announce player built space stations. It's pretty obvious who will have theirs up and running first, but it's going to be interesting to see how the two games approach it.
Elite's will definitely get theirs out first, but I can see it being very generic, fun for a little while, but lacking in depth and detail, and it basically works as a hold-me-over until Star Citizen adds theirs.
@@Billy-bc8pkIt's just going to be the exact same space station as all the other. You just grind for it to be built. These systems will literally just be the same as all the others.
Star citizen only have 5 systems in 1.0 and jump gates between those 5, elite has the milkyway and no jumpgates. I take generic and wide since I want to build a station far away from everything @@Billy-bc8pk
Now this will bring me back to the game! I imagine flying delivery's to support player factions colonizing new systems. But for this to work, we need to get a player faction update, improving how this works.
Every time I watch an ObsidianAnt video I am reminded of how much better the lighting and graphics are in Horizons and what we've lost and are never getting back.
@@barking_mad6649I have no expectations for this. Odyssey was supposed to change elite. It was all just a minimum viable product and in the process burned an entire console playerbase. If I know FDev, this will be implemented in such a cheap way or worse grind forever.
I don't want to be bought by this and trade this for ship interiors, and I probably won't be. The feature is promising, but since Star Citizen is decently playable today, I still don't feel like there's a reason to give Elite another chance and deal with the already archaic restriction of not being able to to explore the ship in a spacesim.
I am guardedly excited about this. It could be really cool, but it could also be an arbitrarily limited and unbelievably grindy mess, too. If it takes dozens of hours of mindless mining or cargo running to build a tiny settlement then the novelty will wear off quickly.
Well slowly but surely Frontier is adding mechanics that they promised when they were on Kickstarter. And I hope they will add, like this one, mechanics that they didn't even mention at the beginning of the game's development.
A big and fairly surprising step in the right direction for Elite! Wasn’t expecting that! Weird to see FDev start adding meaningful stuff to Elite again, but I hope it’s a sign of more to come. More depth to ship gameplay via ship interiors plz? I can dream… either way, this update is gonna probably get me back into Elite.
System Colonization will likely be an immense task which will take thousands of resources to even do, or an immense amount of credits to upkeep the process which could take months of real time to do. I'm for it though, it's a unique take that's 'base-building adjacent' in some ways, and I think that's pretty cool in all honesty. Also that cobra Mk 5 looks AMAZING and I will be buying it with money when it comes out.
Until servers are shut down and Elite is dead for good, I will not stop asking for ship interiors. And I could not care less if anybody have super bulletproof argument against it. I want my interiors. Anyway, nice to see some new stuff.
A large part of the reason people spend ludicious money to buy ships in SC are the interiors. Giving players the feeling of ownership even if it is just a digital object.
Personally, this new ship being another Cobra is,... sad. I'd much prefer brand new designs instead of rebuilt "variants". Still gonna buy it, but still. :( Colonization sounds like there's a lot of potential in it. I hope they nail it and do tons with it. Hopefully we can get some new community goals and gameplay opportunities to go along with it. 🤞
@valaryc nah, it's pretty obvious it's a development and advanment of a Cobra but every thing has been changed and if you stick a Mk3 and Mk5 side by side they are totally different, but you have eyes and can see that for yourself but you probably wanted something different like a Panther Clipper, which is fine, but I like a new imagened Cobra that will be a proper ship like it should be a the poster ship of the game unlike the Mk3
@@___Snake___ Don't make assumptions on my behalf, thanks. I said what I said and it still stands exactly as it was written. If you're looking to argue, go somewhere else with it. Goodbye. I will not engage further.
I have so many questions.... Do I go in a system and claim that by starting to build a station like I do in X4? Do another player come by and help me or burn down my station? If more players build a station and takes months or years to find resources, who profit for that station? Is the profit based on how much you contribute, like for community goals? Is the station another money sucking thing that you have to pay the upkeep like your capital ship? Can you walk around these stations or are they like the standard stations? Are the station built only in space or on the planets too? So many questions, because if the game start to become like X4, maybe there is a future... But if all of this end up being in pure Frontier style a minimal effort thing, where you build the station by clicking a button to accept a mission and then it is a community goal and another station eventually appear, and the story happens in text form in galnet, then I am sorry but I won't even waste my time.
I feel like the cobra mark v is almost like a statement like this is the new era of elite and the new cobra is announcing the start of a new future for the game.
The main thing that would bring me back would be the old Imperial Courier from the Frontier games. There was an awesome modern interpretation done by a fan, looked like a bird of prey styled warship to match my imagination. So far we've got a sports car with the name and a luxury yacht with the size and rough engine layout. Neither evoke my nostalgia for the old ship.
I really really hope that we can actually just colonize stuff on the other side of the galaxy if we have the resources for it.. I wanna be able to build a base wherever I want also I hope the proximity limitation to other player stations won't be too harsh, like single digit lightyears at most, it would be so cool to have player-made colony clusters created by groups! maybe the proximity could vary depending on factions and whatnot
This sounds like something I could return for/to. I've been gone since the space legs was about to enter the game. I wish the game will still get to be saved.
I’ve been colonizing systems and building space stations (and destroying stations of my enemies) for years in X4 and SE. Adding this to Elite won’t bring me back because the bugs and performance issues remain. But if I were still interested in Elite, this gameplay would be welcome as long as it is limited (one system per player).
I really hope that the price is in line the current economy. Credits are pretty easy to get these days, with the ability to earn a fleet carrier in under a day of work. Colonizing a system should be absurdly expensive and resource intensive so that we don't see literally hundreds of new colonies popping up every day.
