Hi ObsoleteOddity my name is Wendy Armstrong from Crawley West Sussex UK, thank you so much for your video just now I so enjoy your videos so much, please keep them coming I hope you are well thanks again ☕🐕🦉🌸🌞🦋🦋🦋🦋x
I love how you told both possible sides of her case. Yes she was guilty of horrific crimes of treating her servants like crap but....was the rest of it made up to take over her fortune? Great way to look at it. Keep stories like these coming!!! Great job!!!
There have been many women who thru history have bathed in blood or apply it to there face. Thanks to American Horror story we became well aquatinted with Madam Delphine Laurie from New Orleans. I would love to see you do a video on her. I love American Horror story but they bring in many real people throughout History and use them in an obvious way to advance the plot. The show is fiction. Yet some people swear about it's accuracy!
I just discovered your Oddities a couple of days ago. Your voice and the way you tell your stories are absolutely mesmerizing. Thank you so much for all you share. I love the Vintage crime and horror.
This is the only version of the "Blood Countess's"story I've seen that examines it from both sides. We often forget that history many times is a matter of perspective, if not outright lies . Thanks for reminding us . Blood baths would be problematic, as it tends to clot. Thanks for another great video, guy.
Definately Great video. It is impossible to figure out life and motivations of the 1600’s because our views and expectations of civilization are so different. BUT some thing happened. Thank You for this video
Actually, by most accounts she was a very affectionate and involved mother especially when taken into account her status and the way most wealthy/ noble families behaved towards their children. Doesn't mean she wasn't an awful human, but apparently a devoted mother.
@@MYST1KWOLF psychopaths find it easy to mimic emotions & pay lip service to social norms. They're organised, cunning, logical & plan what they do. Sociopaths are chaotic, impulse driven & disorganised killers.
I’ve listened to and read about this story, but none has mentioned that she could have been innocent . Your version is by far the best, very interesting. Thank you
She WAS innocent ,but very wealthy .That was her downfall .According to research, Erzsébet Báthory maintained a close relationship with her nephew, Prince Gábor Báthory of Transylvania, who openly converted to the party of István Bocskai in 1605, and who was elected prince of Hungary and Transylvania on April 17, 1605. The princely relative had planned a large campaign against the Habsburgs , and this fact may have contributed to the fabrication of the accusations. In the proceedings of György Thurzó, Erzsébet Báthory may have been a victim of a political crime, because the palatines also had a toothache for the huge fortune, but even her insult against the Báthories could have motivated her. In the course of the investigation the answers were squeezed out of them with torture.
Well done! Thank you for debunking some of the reports as they were so horrendous. I can certainly see something like this happening to steal back in the day, especially against a woman when her husband had died. Cruel times they were.
Its terrible as throughout history the murders have become infamous to the point their names are etched in our brains but the victims aren't and that is truly heart breaking.
Because the victims would rather not remember her? Yeah. But she was Dominate. So Elizabeth gets the infamous glory. And it is a warning to others: 'Watch Carefully The People You Trust Your Children With'. Especially If They Are Known Warlords.
I’ll never understand why reaction channels react to all those stupid animated horror stories but don’t react to your vintage horror stories🙄 I’m gonna keep begging for them to review your channel tho. You deserve more subscribers for this amazing content❤️

It certainly does shed new light on this story. I have heard this story many times and it always made me shudder to think that a woman could kill so many people. It makes perfect sense that she was being overthrown by others hungry for what she had power over and why they would seal all records of her trial. Not speaking her name for 100 years was a bit much though! Thank you for this video!! I am always soothed by your voice, such a pleasure to listen to. I may watch a few more of your videos today.
@@ObsoleteOddity Can I ask your sources of Ferenc's atrocities against Turkish captives that you told in this video? (Disembowelling, impaling alive, playing football with their heads, dancing with their corps)
considering the vast history about lust for power or riches from every century in written memory from every corner of the world and every social strata and culture, concocting a false narrative and using perjury to obtain wealth and power certainly has my vote.
This story has haunted me since I first heard it back in the seventies. Your version was quite an in depth one and l appreciated a lot. Thank you for retelling. I was aware of the innocent or guilty angle, personally I think the truth lies in both - part guilty/part innocent. I guess we may never really know one way or the other.
This supposedly has the answer but you have to become a member - study.com/academy/answer/what-happened-to-elizabeth-bathory-s-children.html Most other sites just mention that two died as infants but three survived. So supposedly she had 5 kids with her husband.
I've heard this story before, but never so beautifully told. You capture the drama and passion at the right times. I agree with you in that she may have been cruel, perhaps moreso than others, but not to the extremes told. Images were awesome. Well done, as usual. 👋
@@teresamotherearthinspired1956s by beautifully read I mean the presentation of the story. Not everybody that can read can narrate. Oddie has a very gracious way of presenting even the most horrific stories. So not only do I appreciate the story, horror or not, I appreciate the presentation of it. There's always more to the story than the story itself! 🌹

It seems more that Elizabeth was the victim of greedy men. If she had wealth that the crown was envious of, it isn’t impossible to think that the nobles wanted her money and property. I get very concerned when the scholars and church admit that they believe in witchcraft and the dark arts. Excellent analysis as always. Thank You BC stay safe and take care of yourself and your wife.
Yeah, I feel you on that one. Only thing is, she doesn't scare me. Just disgusted about the horrible things she's done to the poor girls. So I can watch this now and later tonight, alone in the dark in my apartment. Enjoy watching it later.
@@teresamotherearthinspired1956s Some people enjoy learning about human history. Whether good or bad, it's still history. There's nothing wrong with that.
Empress of the Universe13 I wish he’d do a Audible book bc of his buttery smooth, soothing, yet haunting voice...but at the same time I love the illustrations, as well! Love putting on an old audio of his, as it sends me to a peaceful sleep! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who gets so much from our Life’s Guardian narrator! ❤️😇🙏
Great, I love the artwork you choose to go along. You have a great voice to listen, learn and be entertained. Variety is good, yes, Gothic mystery, anything spooky. Thank you so much, I love it all.
Great feature Oddie! Enjoyed it very much. I especially appreciated the choice to feature various sides of the story and different accounts of the tale. You always hit the mark!
Would love more Lovecraft or other authors, I swear you could do audiobooks for a living! Quite honestly I will watch anything you put out your delivery makes anything interesting! 🤗 for you and Odette hope you both are well!
generally, there are too many other youtubers doing the generic horror from crime. you are doing great with some of the tragic stories(many nothing to do with crime) back then when i sub to your channel 2 years ago.
Wow! This was more in depth then what I've read about Elizabeth Bathory. Your voice is very soothing and the visuals flow so smooth painting pictures of your narration. Sad story, but realistic with religious and territory aspect.
As a 26 year old woman, hearing alm the disgusting, vile, psychopathic things she did to the girls & young women. I'm sure that I wouldn't have survived at all, would've died so quick. When I heard about the last one that "stole" the pear, the way you spoke about her. My heart hurts to all these beautiful girls & young women. That beast with her clan of helpers took the life from them.
Favorite part is the pastor's testimony about the invisible black cats and dogs that attacked him. They were invisible AND black? Oh, really? How's that work, sir? lol Powerful wealthy women were only as safe as their family were able to make them or wanted them to be. As you pointed out, that could be used to argue both sides, which I thank you for presenting. Love how unique and creative your videos are! Knowing how stories grow, I believe it was highly exaggerated. How many aristocratic daughters could you kill before they'd complain?
It was probably becayse black cats and dogs were thought to be the familiars of witches. Black cats were cosidered bad luck, if not downright evil. Many were killed. In other words, if you have invisible demon cats, they must be black. lol
@@jimmyclimer594 I suspect it wasn't the first time you were traumatized in such a way by that wild purring creature so you already knew what color he is when not invisible.
I discovered you’re stories today, and immediately subscribed. This is absolutely fascinating. I have watched 3 tonight, and look forward to many more.
Im not subscribed to your patreon but I will say I have never seen a Bathory doc with a two sided tale. I came for the details but you went further with the intrigue aspect that made this more in depth which I wasn't expecting. Thank you so much for your full attention to this story.
Thanks for reaching out with your positive feedback, I appreciate it. Yes nearly all the other creators just follow the well trodden path, and copy each other - I try to research all possible details.
It’s funny they supposedly cared so much about “ the girls “ at the castle yet they killed them so easily in her place after the abuse. They framed her and took her land . We all know the history of the Catholic Church and sadly the things they still cover up now. RIP to the innocent slave girls.
Classic "Witch" stitch up, whole shebang for enormous wealth. Aside from those few loyal servants who were tortured to agree. Looks like everyone gained. Wonder what happened to her Daughters. Id like to see a forensic investigation into her case. I did read somewhere Castle had its own modern Medical facilities, Midwives, a go to for Abortions and banned medicines.
Nonsese, Nothing but neo feminist BS! the women was a sick and twisted , who got pleaseure out of killing and torturing women. Even if she offered help to these girls a lot were dieing at a allarming rate. Her aunt was allso a natorious Satanist. Her relatives were gratestatesmen and in some cases women but they were like all blue blooded familys mass murderures who did go and torture the common folk becase they cold, and when i mean torture they did it for pleashure. In eastern europe at the time it was perfectly acceptable for Nobals to Even round up peasants for dinner partys wear they would be tortured in front of guests as entertainment! at one party bathory and her husband threw it was recorded that they covered a girl in honey and all the guests watched as she was stung to death by bees and wasps! when the locale Lutherin Minister herd this he made a complaint as the the extant they were torturing there Surfs. bathory and her husband had the man removed at once. this women was not some early feminist Idole , she was sick and twisted. But the violent times she grew up in and of course growing up in a rairified class were they could do as they liked allso had something to do with it.
@@e.jenima7263 LOL "Notorious Satanist" . Like people, especially women, weren't just called that all the time in order to persecute them. i'd like to know what historical documents or sources you have consulted in order to assert your claims.
LOVE this one! I think that the seizures and outbursts (if they actually happened) might have been due to inbreeding as well as mental problems. Plus the fact that she was intelligent. Highly intelligent people are sometimes very close to insanity. Fact is we will never really know the real story. But, these kind of stories are so facinating! Thank you so much for another awesome feature!!!! Please keep doing stories like this one!
Yes, severe inbreeding can result in epilepsy :( there's a theory that pharaoh Akhenaten was epileptic. I don't know the degree to which Bathory was inbred, tho.
As always, an awesome story told from both sides of the aisle. I am inclined to believe she is guilty; however, I personally have a bias of law enforcement from working with them and am aware of this! Horror history is awesome & I would love to see some of your tape recordings of beyond the grave as well!! Very interesting. Thank you!
Have you ever been hypnotized? Mesmerized and captivated? This is what listening to your stories does for me. I’m almost innocence in a hypnotic trance that and snares me until the very end. Thank you for the amazing content as I always enjoy everything you post.

I love the stories and your storytelling. I introduced your channel to my therapist. Lol. She asked what I do during the quarantine and I said, I binge watch the Obsolete channel. The Therapist needs a Therapeutic out too! 😃❤️❤️
Old friend, I found this to be one of the best documentaries I have seen on the subject. The information on her early life and court records were very enlightening. Your friend Cee from the little haunted cottage in ireland 💚💚💚🍀🍀🍀😷
It is refreshing to hear someone like you describe this as it is, just might be speculation or some kind of conspiracy against her and the part where she has a large state might have been the real issue here. That I didn't know, thanks
I have become completely addicted to your telling of these historical stories. Please don't stop! I've been binge watching/listening since I discovered your channel! You're amazing! Bathory was definitely and undeniably guilty. Let's just say she made 2 huge mistakes 1. Never leave any witnesses 2. Never leave any evidence of the crime.
Since so many comments say "I'm not sure how I got here.." I had to think through my RU-vid "tracks" on how I managed to find your channel. Started off with Good Mythical Morning on an episode about old recipes/foods, led to a lovely elderly woman's channel that teaches how to make meals from the great depression. This led to Steve1989, he does some amazing historical reviews of C-Rations/MREs and old military survival gear. That lead to Weird History, then Forgotten Lives and an episode about "The Monster of the Palace." Lo and behold I find "The Gruesome Case of the Papin Sisters" in my recommendations and I've been binging your channel for the last day straight lol Love your attention to detail, the visuals you add to the episodes and the compassion and respect you give to the victims in these stories. It's so lovely to see that their names and their stories will not be forgotten and are memorialized in such a caring way. Your voice is so soothing yet also adds a creepy factor where necessary. I think I saw a comment calling you the "Vincent Price of RU-vid" and that totally fits! The amount of effort you put into these videos is amazing and shows how passionate you are about the subject you're presenting and the discussion you have after the story is so fun to listen to. Off to binge more, I'll move on to Patreon once I'm caught up. Thanks for all you do Oddie!
Thanks for your really great feedback Aubrey, a truly wonderful compliment - much appreciated :) Looking forward to you joining my community on Patreon!
I can understand her satanic attributes because of her family background which must have had a big impact on her future life but as you know the truth is nearly always elaborated upon we will never know exactly what happend but as its been known there is never smoke without fire i enjoy your videos very much I’m pleased you are going to introduce a variety of storys i must add you have a lovely voice at the end of the video
There is a principle in law - innocent til proven guilty. As salacious as it would be to believe that this all happened, I'd take it with a very large grain of salt. Record keeping from that part of the world wasn't too good or accurate.
I myself, am fascinated of these things going on so many centuries ago. She certainly did not appear to be innocent, but maybe things were exaggerated to a certain point. Very well done.
I love the way you present history. Thank you very much for what you do. I love the obscure things you find that I might never have heard of otherwise. Keep up the good work.
ODDIE, your stories & narration are absolutely WONDERFUL. I’ve got quite a few to catch up on due to family illness. Thank you for these fascinating and incredible things that people do... it’s unbelievable that this sort of cruelty goes ‘unchecked’; ashamedly even today. I will never understand how people can be so horrifically cruel. I couldn’t ‘hurt a fly’. Please keep these ‘lessons’ up in any form that suits you. Again, & always THANK YOU. 😃🇦🇺
I just found this channel and I can’t stop watching. Thank you for all your hard work and research. I’ve been searching for a channel like this for a while! Can’t wait to see more!
This story is mind blowing! I have no idea at all how to judge in this matter. It would be interesting to have people to answer the questions, that would be asked in a court of law. Story was stimulating I'm going to watch it again
Saunter Sway Much like the trial of Ann Boleyn for Witchcraft, she was not given opportunity to make her defence or answer to the charges. To be honest...none of them gave much thought to the well being of peasants unless they could serve as a means to getting rid of an inconvenient woman and garnering her lands and holdings.🖤🇨🇦
Louise Gross it is a time weathered and often told tale of deceit...brought out and dusted off for each possible use...damn the evidence! Tell the big lie convincingly enough, often enough and evidence is no longer needed.🖤🇨🇦
Nobody can give a clear judgement. Even historians who studied the case disagree. Some historical evidence exist, but it is too little to be 100 % certain, whether she really was guilty or she was just a victim of a plot and consequently the rumours.
I want to believe she was mostly innocent and this was religious-political as well as influenced by the satanic witchcraft in the day. But, I agree with you that there was likely cruelty towards her servants as was also common. I think that in every story however contrived there is an element of truth in it which makes it believable. Thank you for your stories. Your storytelling is really enjoyable.
I love this stores you present to us. I enjoy these stories.I also appreciate the photos and other pictures and special effects ,that you include in each story. Thank you for all the hard work and dedication you put into each video!
YES! I was waiting for this one! Thank you, Oddie! I recently watched a film called "The Countess" (2008, released 2009), but it was portrayed more like a biographical movie than a horror film, with virtually any and all of the graphic violence, superstition & black magic elements (so typical of the horror genre) either removed or played down considerably. They portrayed her obsession with maiden blood equal to a "fountain of youth" as the result of paranoia and mental instability spurned on by the heartbroken belief she was abandoned by her lover, but he was in fact kept away from her by his own family and had never had any intention of ever leaving her. By the time he did get back to her, and explained himself, he discovered a woman much different than the one he thought was waiting for him. It was not an "exciting" film by any stretch, being more "historical" than "horror", but it was still worth the watch. Some of those stills look familiar, from the film - cool! :-)
I adore your voice & style of your story telling. Everything from the images to music & how it’s all written. Definitely she was guilty I feel from the facts. ❤ new subscriber btw! I’m so impressed! Great job!
I will always think she was guilty. Like the Tsavo lions, we'll never know how many victims she had. To get her fortune, her relatives could just as easily have had her poisoned or outright murdered with the amount of staff coming(but never going). There are exaggerations, of course, like the iron maiden-there is really no documented proof of them at that time. And she didn't need supernatural powers, she had lands and titles.
I’ve heard of Elizabeth Bathory , but never the entire story.Thank you Oddie! Stay safe 🤗 edit: the entire time all I could imagine was how awful that castle must have smelled, if indeed she was guilty.
One thing I have always loved is being able to read along as I listen. Then I miss nothing said. As time has gone by your editing, animation etc has gotten better and better over time. Not that it was bad. You videos have been amazing since the first one I watched several years ago. I will be an Oddie fan for life:! May not have posted in awhile but I watch the videos all the time:) You are and will remain my favorite RU-vid channel:)
Dear Sir, as I and my family sit tight during these hard times of the pandemic, once again you took us away from the hard times that around the world is going on. Stay safe and healthy to you and your family, and please keep these stories going. Much care to you, Karen in Texas.
I loved this account of this woman's life because you presented both sides. I wish I could pronounce all those foreign words as well as you do. I am glad we don't live in a time with servants. Oddie you have a wonderful perspective.
How can they go to sleep knowing what they've been doing. HEARING them scream, yell, cry & continue....disgusting. Do we know who yhe girls/young women were? 650 lives taken in the most grotesque way. I FELT their pain, obviously never as them but...so digusting & vile. As a 26 year old woman & virgin too, my heart goes out to the victims. Everything that they could've done w/ their lives. 😭😭😭
@Aytaestrella 😂 I was gonna comment "26 and virgin woman? Holla at me" but then you pointed out a good.. point 😅 but nah that's not really a shameful thing, that's a self discipline hard to come across these days in serious
I just discovered your channel last week. Your voice is soothing and charming . The videos are works of art. I’m binge watching the videos. You have a gift . Thank you ☺️
I love the videos you make. I enjoy the historical stories the best but I also love your vacations videos that show the beautiful scenery around your part of the world. I like the junk store wanderings too. This story was bit disturbing but I have to admit I didn't watch some of the terrible scenes that she was accused of doing-too gruesome for me but it was a interesting story lots of info I had never heard. She is always portrayed as bathing in the blood of her victims but none of the other atrocities. Too bad we will never know the true story. Thanks for another great video-can't wait for the next.
🙂 yes. & i still can't get over that wonderful pharmacy sign that Oddie captured, i forget the location, but i was amazed how well that place had weathered for being so old! 🙂

Your videos are awesome, this is the perfect time to be uncovering situations in the past that sometimes feel a little to close to home these days. You give people an excellent place to learn
I've just discovered this channel, and I don't even really watch youtube for this kind of content. I have to say, I've really enjoyed it. This was my third of your shows in a row & I just felt I should say something. Thank you!
Her story has always fascinated me... highly debatable still. My conclusion is this is one of the best political propaganda cases to date. In her time she was wealthier than the King himself, in a time where women didn’t have power. Granted she probably was a harsh ruler... I highly doubt it was anything like described. Still makes for and interesting story to date. Well done Oddy!
You should hear Karliene’s song dedicated to Elizabeth Bathory! She sings it in the Countess’ POV and the song is very accurate, like Oddy’s version, mentioning her wealth and power being a threat! She even use the Hungarian version of Elizabeth’s name!
This is amazing, everything you do is amazing, the way you tell the stories, the pictures you use, your soothing voice, the drama you bring to it all, the time, the research, the passion for it all, it's just amazing, I absolutely love your channel, and thank you for what you do, I would rather watch any one of your videos than anything any history channel puts out.
Whether or not she did everything she was accused of who knows? But, there is no doubt she was an evil, abusive, arrogant, mistress, like others of her kind. The rich still get away with such evil, but have to be far more secretive about it. PS You do an absolutely wonderful job of combining images with the story. You keep it interesting and move at a perfect pace. Very enjoyable narration. Much thanks for the hard work you put into the videos.
