Girl we need a follow up video for the Jeffree star series! Especially now that he’s trying to do a comeback with the beauty killer palette/revamp of his old music career.
10:45 do folks remember when JK Rowling tweeted that she'd "Always pictured Hermione as black." And then she deleted her tweet after someone asked: "Does that include when you described her hair as 'messy'?" 😂
The thing is this isn't a book that lends itself to a hollywood adaptation. The whole thing is it critques toxic beauty standards for teenage girls but Hollywood's marketing methods rely on exactly what the book is critqueing. It was always doomed to fail
It feels. strange that a black trans woman was cast as the eugenics-loving villain in a movie about children being forced to undergo cosmetic surgeries that control their minds. Like I know that it hopefully wasn’t meant like that but uh. it definitely gives it some uncomfortable subtext
Aquele filtro do tiktok means "That tiktok filter" It's Brazilian Portuguese, in fact here in Brazil this film became a huge joke because of the famous influencers who have the face of a tiktok filter huehue
The comment on the "uglies" living situation really got me thinking. I think what some distopean stories lack is that grungy "someone-throw-you-a-slice-of-bread-or-youll-die" look and opt for this super high tech and expensive look. What makes the "hunger games" future so much scarier (at least to me) is that most people in america will always be closer to that reality than we ever would be to a "rich" future
Since mortal instruments was just mentioned I must add in that the incest thing between the mc and her not-brother is a Major plot point in multiple of the books and its also not the only incest plot. I'm legally obligated to mention it because I read most of that series in highschool and the pain haunts me
Omg yeah. I love the shadowhunter books, but the mortal instruments is the worst of the worst series in that universe. I read it as a preteen and never opened it again.
i’m like 99% sure that author has a history of writing incest plots prior to the shadowhunter books. which i think is yucky but it’s so much yuckier to include your fetish into your books who’s main demographic is minors. i know some people will argue it’s a young adult series but we all recognize it’s mostly teenagers. and maybe i am shaming but i find it disgusting to fetishize incest at all BUT if you’re going to do it, can’t you keep it separate?
@@mr.bingusthecat To be fair, as far as I know of 'before' she wrote that in fanfiction (though she has denied ever writing it and I have never seen concrete proof of anything so can't comment) and not in an actual book, which is a vastly different world and should not be judged with published writing content standards of morality. She has since said though that she regrets a lot of what she wrote in mortal instruments, and as a reader of her current other series I can atleast attest that no weird gross plots like this have occurred and her writing has vastly improved in the decades since. That's not to say that she doesn't have many other problems but yeah. Hopefully this makes sense haha Edited for grammatical errors
As soon as it was like maybe he’s her brother in the books and it got at all confusing about that fact, I was like I don’t need this in my life, and just read the Wikipedia plot summaries for the rest of the books lmao, I cannot stand incest/pseudo-incest romance plot lines, it’s too yuck for me.
I haven’t finished the video but I’m kinda wondering why people don’t talk about how gay Tally and Shay were for most of the movie? Tally’s relationship with David felt out of nowhere and honestly I was envisioning a much older guy from the way they described him
It's so funny that David's impressed by Tally's not-like-other-girls grit when that's literally what EVERY girl who's part of his group would HAVE to be like in order to survive out in the wilderness
When I watched this with my friend we also 100% thought Shay was in love with Tali LOL 😂 I've never read the book so I like that you keep giving tidbits about what's different or not. Ty!!
Guys this is so off topic but the ad before this video was an ad for a SHOW Markiplier was ACTING IN. I dunno why but I had to share bc I didn’t know it was a thing and that’s so cool. But also on topic: I read Peeps by this dude and by far a better series, if just as trippy and not actually necessarily should have been aimed at kids. In Uglies, my issues are the glorifying of self harm, be it the actual c()tting or the plastic surgery procedure thing that is TERRIFYING (the veneers, bro, wtf) or the mental damage purposely inflicted on those not “useful” (like okay, just call it walking euthanasia, that’s what it is); it isn’t really something that overall promotes normal and healthy ANYTHING. And on top of that, the adaptation then went on to miss the mark every second it could bc I bet they didn’t read the book. It’s just not a book series built for adaptation, and that’s okay. Not all of them are. Like how I’m worried Fourth Wing and ACOTAR ones are just going to damage the fandom further or how it was disappointing when then adapted Shadow and Bone (they didn’t have to do the characters that dirty).
If you thought 'Uglies' was a wild book by Scott Westerfield. His book 'Peeps' is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay crazier. He didn't just try to capitalize on the dystopia genre. Peeps is a vampire romance novel, but there is a twist. You don't become a vampire by being bit. Instead, vampirism is passed as an STD. Absolutely wild
Me and my boyfriend are going to watch this once he gets to my apartment! We’ve been looking forward to a new upload, we love your videos you’re too funny!
Mortal Instruments wasn't a dystopian book though, did they change up something in the movie? (I haven't watched it) It was more of a magical fantasy series, normal-girl-finds-magic-world-exists thing, like Harry Potter ig.
