My dears, if there is one thing that actors and politicians have in common, it’s that they love a speech. Here we witness Elizabeth (Claire Foy) on her 21st birthday, demonstrating her compassion and authority as she addresses the British Commonwealth and pledges her life to her duties.

She took that motto, “Long or short” very seriously.

Fun fact: while the scene is supposed to take place in a warm afternoon in South Africa it was shot in Britain on a very cold day, and Claire Foy had to act while wearing a summer dress not great for that weather. She's a pro

That pretty much marked the beginning of the end of the empire. India,Burma,Ceylon etc etc etc. they would all be gone within 5 years

Although this entire series is a “modern reenactment” of specific events that occurred during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, I enjoyed the effort, and acting of the characters in the ENTIRE series! ❤️

I’m sure plenty of people let the Margaret (Roberts) moment pass by unnoticed.

This is not a wartime speech. This speech was delivered two years after WW2 ended.

They never said WW2 and actually war was still ongoing through 1947 in parts of the world such as Africa and the Middle East which were remnants of WW2. In the U.S Harry Truman gave an official proclamation in Dec 1946 declaring WW2 over, so while we celebrate May 1945 as the official date, back then there were still operations ongoing after that. Truman dropped the bombs on Japan in August 1947. Several months after this speech.

@@flagler88 not true. Japan unconditionally surrendered in August/September 1945. The war was absolutely over. There was no fighting going on in 1947.

@@russelldrew No not Japan that is correct I accidentally put the wrong year but there literally were military operations going on in Africa and the Middle East. The reason most of the montage is focused on those areas. British troops were still in those regions and the Commonwealth still had interests there. Plus the cold war had begun. No actual fighting but they didn't know it wouldn't erupt. There was no absolute peace and the threat of another war was real.

@@flagler88 1947 was considered peace time. That’s really just the end of the story. This is not debatable.

The Commonwealth were still being affected by war in April 1947 when this speech was given and British troops were still fighting in parts of the world such as Africa and the Middle East which were remnants of WW2.

Was she queen by this time? Or still princess of Wales?
@feverspell

This was in 1947, so she wasn't the Queen yet, and she was never Princess of Wales. The Princess of Wales is the wife of the Prince of Wales.
