The Queen Mother was rude, petty and a racist-an unrepentant one, at that. She never changed with the times, not at all. And there are loads of actual accounts of her being awful, looking down on the poor, making terrible comments about people’s appearance, just terrible. Remember that “The Crown” is fiction, and have painted these people actually far better than they were. I don’t hate the RF, but I am a realist. This woman was indeed a privileged aristocrat of her time, and literally learned very little about being kind and decent to people in 102 years.
That’s a pretty strong statement to say about someone they never met! I guess I the opinion of people with low IQ will believe terrible things about anybody who doesn’t have the same skin color as you or share your opinions- do better!
@@SuperStella1111 You’ve missed the point. It isn’t about hating the RF. It is about calling out an old, racist, entitled woman who seemingly thought that she was above the entire world, most importantly the parts of the British Empire with all its complexity and diversity. She was contemptuous of anyone that she believed wasn’t of her “station”. THAT is why we are commenting the way we are. Please try to keep up.
Did you know that this isn't FaceTime absolute reality don't you and then any of the conversations are made up and not a reflection of the actual person you do know that don't you
The scene during the wedding of princess elizabeth and prince philip, princess alice wore her nun dress, and looks very frail… but in the real life, princess alice wore an appropriate dress for the wedding not as a nun, and princess alice never was that frail looking… despite her disability she was a formidable woman, its nice to see that they corrected it in season 3 when jane lapotaire played princes alice.
However, she was in her nun dress at Elizabeth’s coronation, which looked way more dramatic and a lot better, it’s like God actually sent a messenger to this divine occasion.
The programme doesn’t appear to respect the fact that Diana was Lady Diana Spencer before arrange, of noble birth and very familiar with royal protocol.
4:10 Queen Elizabeth II had a lot of classes with the finest tutors in constitutional law, history etc. She didn't go to school or college though which means that she didn't get to interact with ordinary girls from different classes. That is one reason she agreed to send her children to school. Unfoetunately Charles and Gordonstoun were not a good match.
Finest tutors? They were at Eton! If they’d been any good, they’d have been at OxBridge. Phillip chose Gordonstoun, his own alma mater, not Elizabeth. She had uniforms made for Eton, he was enrolled and all, and then Phillip scotches it. Poor Charles, his mother was weak and his father a bully. And boy, have we witnessed the impacts. The nobility are so dysfunctional they make the Murdochs look better.
Well at some point she could get over it and take some responsibility….. David didn’t shove the smokes in Bertie’s mouth….. stressful times yes but some healthier choices could have gone a long way….. plus locking up her sick nieces and still blaming David….. yeah no.
She was angry at David because thanks to him abdicating the burden of being king was now on Albert, and saw him as a weak man who betrayed their country just for an American socialite, also, David disrespected her and her daughters.
……she was angry at David bc he spurned her when they were younger, & she desperately wanted to be the Queen. She, the PM, & the A of C all worked towards getting David off the Throne. Finally he was, thanks to Wallis Simpson………
I just realized I’ve seen both Olivia Colman and Helena Bonham Carter, play the Queen mum before, Helena Bonham Carter in The King’s Speech and Olivia Colman in Hyde Park on Hudson, in that Samuel West, the actor who portrayed Sir Anthony Blunt played George VI.
@@carson11100 i can tolerate that, maybe its because she have trauma..but for margaret, she's really really really a cruel mother..she did it the same to charles, i know she love charles more than the other of the royal family..but she made charles and diana married unhappily because of her selfish behavior..and because of her selfish behavior too charles and camilla are now hated by many people..
That man and his wife were like that about everyone, belittling from subtle to extreme, and was about all they really had going for them to elevate their own narcissistic egos.
Ok so we have Anne Boleyn talking to Queen Victoria, then Queen Victoria talking to Elizabeth II, Jane Grey coming in an Anne Boleyn Costume to yell at everyone!!!
@@JimMac23 She was. It is good her true character was portrayed in the Crown. I recall in the '80s she was the most popular royal, more popular than even Diana at that time, because she was portrayed as everyone's favourite grandmother. Which in real life she definitely wasn't.
@@SymphonyBrahms i researched it a while back n read somewhere she made some servants run around for entertainment? i can't remember it exactly, it's been forever since i read it i tried finding their sources too but they just claimed it's from some journal or something if you got anything describing how she was irl I'd really want to read it, cuz i couldn't figure out why they made her seem so evil in the show
Maybe the woman was nothing like the character portrayed, but in this series she's portrayed as THE WORST!! I dislike her so much that I grew fond of calling her Cookie! 😊
@@KingJackson11355 you should read all the books that has been written about her. Only redeeming quality she had was hre support for her husband and country but she was rude arrogant and snobbish. She herself said that she not as nice as people think she is. She was very controlling and demanding. Princess Margreat's friend Lady Glanconner( who was maid of honor at Queen's coronation) has said that years after when she and princess margreat were watching coronation recording she noticed that every one was very happy but margreat was looking sad, and she asked margreat why she was sad? Margreat reply because after coronation I and mummy were going moving out of Buckingham palace now I have live with my mummy alone without papa and Lilibet. You know it's not easy to live with her alone. She and prince philip didn't get along because she thought he has too much influence over her daughter (like she didn't had too much influence over her husband 🙄) She used call prince philip the hun( which was derogatory name allied army used for Austrian and Hungarian soldiers in world war I) But She get along well with princess margreat's husband how was verbally and emotionally abusive husband, who cheated princess margreat 1st and had habit of writing notes to margreat in which he used make fun of her looks. After margreat's husband was openly cheating on her Queen mother didn't car much about her daughter's feeling continue having lunch with inviting to parties without margreat etc...
So she was the one in the background running things. She hated that Edward abdicated because, being King caused her husband to die. In that line of thinking then been King for Edward would have caused him to die. Oh her secrets would be so interesting. And the Education part. Elisabeth was 10 when ger father became king. They knew she would be queen and yet they still didn't properly educate her for what they knew was eventually happening
It's honestly really sad that she was written as cold-hearted, considering how she was actually quite a remarkable woman. She was very ahead of the time on many issues. Examples including, when a Conservative minister told her not to employ a homosexual for service, she said, "we'll have to serve ourselves then". And when someone said racist remarks about the Commonwealth in that - "they're nothing like us", she said "I'm very keen on them. They're all like us".
I understand that most of her male servants were gay. She like being around gay men. On one occasion her bedtime toddy was late coming from the kitchen. So she phoned down and said, "Would one of you old queens bring this old queen her toddy?"
HM Queen Elizabeth Bowes Lyon says about Prince Philip mother Queen Alice she was in sanitorium so Prince Philip and his dad family must know King Kalayavana Greek King after all they Greeks
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother never behaved like this, remember this is not based on FACT! Based on actual events but dramatically dramatic drama just for the shows interested, that's not fact! HM The Queen Mother, may have been some of the power behind the throne in King George VI reign, just like our Queen Camilla might be behind our now King Charles!
And she would have had no business in interfering with either marriage. I don't like Camilla. But I do like Meghan. And both Charles and Harry have the right to marry who they want.
Not necessarily. She didn’t really have any power ever, especially after her husband died as she was never the monarch. However, that being said she did like to try to control things it seems
Prince Moritz of Hesse? Prince Christian of Hannover? I wonder why the fictional Queen Mother here was pushing German ex-princes? I understood that the Queen Mother disliked the idea of a foreign prince, especially German princes, for her daughters.
The British family as it exists now are more German than they are native Britons. It’s been like that since the end of the Stuart monarchs. After Queen Anne died with no heirs the closest heir was a succession of German princes, the house of Hanover were entirely German some “English” kings couldn’t even speak English because they were raised in Germany. I think it was king George the third (the mad one) who was the first of these German kings to speak proper English. And even after integrating into the English monarchy, they still married German princes to maintain land holdings both in England and in Germany considering at this time the three George’s were both king of Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and holy Roman emperor and prince elector of Hanover. Even Queen Victoria’s husband Albert was a German. And the Battenburgs or Mountbattens (prince Phillip’s side of the family) are German.
@@henrylivingstone2971 actually they're more Danish. Prince Phillip's father's family were Danish (hence why he was a Prince Of Greece & Denmark) and Queen Alexandria, Queen Elizabeth II's great-grandmother and wife of King Edward VII was Danish too. While there is plenty of German heritage, the more recent generations of the royal family have Danish or British ancestry.
@@Myne1001 They might’ve been the ruling families of Denmark and Greece but they weren’t ethnic Danes. Phillip’s father, Prince Andrew, was from the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg a collateral German branch of the house of Oldenburg. The House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg whilst rulers of Denmark since 1448 were still Germans and they kept it that way considering they mainly married with other German families like the Hesse, Kessel, Battenburgs, and Saxe Coburg Gotha. So while they are “Danish” in name they are not ethnic Danes, they’re almost all Germans.
The Angrezi which means English people watch Coronation St and Eastenders but I really liked Britain bloody crown it was really wonderful in the series you hear the wonderful music and please bring back the good old movies really wonderful
Artistic license, I think. Or simply just for the sake of variety. :) The Queen Mother was amply praised in all her life and well after that for being a truly magnificent lady. The writer might have thought that in stead of the adulation he can show the world some shady aspects of her long life. And I think that form a purely dramaturgical point of view the creators of the show might have decided that the Crown cannot have more than one principal figure, and that must be the Queen alone, undoubtedly. Therefore it was necessary to dial down the Queen Mother's real influence and role in the story, and they've sacrificed the accuracy for the sake of entertaining.
@@westminsterwatcher5152 I believe we all have good and bad sides. For some reason the show tended to only show her sides which maybe were not the best. But maybe that did that for entertainment
@@KingJackson11355 Yeah, she was multi-faceted and that was reflected in the show. Yes she could be exceptionally unkind, but we did see some soft moments, an example being when she's trying to buy the Castle of Mey and the man didn't recognise her, allowing her to avoid the stuffy protocol. She was also exceedingly bitter - but that is understandable - she'd lost her husband and blamed the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Was that legitimate? In some ways yes. George VI wasn't a natural King. He was shy. Nervous. His smoking habit didn't help but the pressures placed on him by his cowardly brother had an impact. It took its toll and claimed his life. Queen Mother was inconsolable. She was also exceedingly ruthless. Yet the show was brilliant in highlighting her many characteristics. Writing was superb, however embellished it might have been.
This series is far from true. It is a huge fiction through and through. The Queen Mother was a kind, considerate, intelligent person. She was nothing like she is portrayed here.
