Elizabeth is an outer northern suburb of the Adelaide metropolitan area, South Australia, 24 km north of the Adelaide city centre. It is located in the City of Playford. At the 2016 census, Elizabeth had a population of 1,024.
Established in 1955, it was the seat of the former local government body, the The old City of Elizabeth, which included Elizabeth as well as the immediately adjacent suburbs on all sides except the west. Although the City of Elizabeth no longer exists, having been amalgamated into the much larger City of Playford in 1997, the term 'Elizabeth', in the context of Adelaide, typically refers to the historic municipality and the distinct community therein.
Before the 1950s, most of the area surrounding today's suburb of Elizabeth was farming land. After the end of the Second World War with its shortage of materials, the state government decided that South Australia needed to grow and become industrialised. A satellite city was planned for northern metropolitan fringe of Adelaide between the existing townships of Salisbury and Smithfield. The South Australian Housing Trust initiated a housing development program in the area, with a purchase of 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) at the site of the present suburb.
The township (now suburb) of Elizabeth was established on 16 November 1955, being named after Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia. In 1964, a new local government body, the municipality of Elizabeth, later called City of Elizabeth, was created by severance from the District Council of Salisbury. This allowed the local government to be focused explicitly on the newly-developed land and distinct local growing community centred at Elizabeth.
Australian musician Jimmy Barnes grew up in Elizabeth, and released a song about the town in 2019, Shutting down our town.

Boy that brings back memories.... Born and bred in Elizabeth. Moved on now, but it was awesome to see the transition and progress through construction. The music was a perfect choice to capture the sentiment. Thanks for your vid....

My pleasure Toni. Yes you can really see how the SAHT, Playford and the people of Elizabeth were really on a mission in those early days. It's quite impressive.

According to my parents, I was somewhere in that crowd at the inauguration, sitting on my dad's shoulders! I think we were waiting for our first house in Hannan Street at Elizabeth South. Seeing the police station under construction, I recall it used to be in a house on Ridley Road in the South. There was a ball on a pole out front with Police written on it.

Oh, wow. I knew about the first Police station being a house on Ridley Road. Hadn't heard about the ball out the front though. How funny :-)

I thought the Clock Tower was much older than this, you can't look at Elizabeth any other way without it.

That's right. There was a call at one point amongst some in Playford Council to have the tower knocked down. Can you imagine? Nothing seems sacred to many of these people. Fortunately there were enough members against that idea to make sure that was never seriously considered. At least for now

I live in Queensland I heard about Elizabeth through the Jimmy Barns story Such great video and pictures of this town starting out. Such a shame other towns don't have this much video and picture content 👍

Oh my, what you must have thought of us after reading Jimmy's book..lol. Jimmy and I grew up in the same western area of Elizabeth. It was rough, but full of good, hard working people strong in character. Wouldn't trade it. You may find it interesting to know Doc Neeson from the Angels, Glenn Shorrock from Little River Band and of course Steve Prestwich from Chisel all grew up in Elizabeth.

Why is it such a run down area now?

Too much selling off of public assets to outside private interests, while those same private interests are not held accountable for maintaining what were once public buildings - they allow buildings to sit and go derelict while (I assume) they wait for land values to go up. Too many councillors don't seem to care about Elizabeth's aesthetic history, or even its future for that matter. We need change. Thank you for watching James 🙏
