Perfectly FLAWLESS. She was brilliant. And although there are a few terrific contemporary jazz vocalists out there, there will NEVER again be another Ella Fitzgerald. How lucky we were to be enriched by her presence.
This is an outstanding rendition, not a cover version like many other versions, Ella would always bring something unique to any song she ever sang. Perfect diction, intonation, and a difficult song to sing slowly requiring great vocal control, this is singing at it's finest.
At 50 that voice still has that range, power, and control. yeah, and I don't even have to state the usual "no auto-tune", and no backing tracks, and no earbuds. ah, go one, yeah, not even backup singers, no bunch of non-relevant dancers, and not a navel in sight. Culture is truly DE-Evolving.
You can't call this singing because apparently many people sing on this day and age. No, Ella didn't sing, she felt the music and tried to make us understand how life (should be) when it's only felt.
This is just spectacular; but Ms. Fitzgerald was beyond spectacular. We were truly blessed to have this magnificent woman grace us with her voice. And to think she performed before a/c, without a sip of water or clearing her throat. Just beyond talented. I hope when/if I get to heaven I get to meet or see her. Just to have been in her presence when have been beyond amazing. Rest easy Ms. Fitzgerald for you truly deserve for all that you gave the world.
This version ist masterfull, touching and simply unmatched.... Indeed no words to describe.... Anyone who knows something about Ella's life (from biographies) might burst into tears when he hears Ella with that song, and the way she sings these lyrics! Ella was a lonely woman. Never had luck with men. Her whole life was on stage. She was loved by millions for her singing. But she lived alone on the stage. After her concerts she went to eat something with her musicians, then she went into the respective hotel. To go the next day in another city, or another country to be back on stage. That was her life fifty or sixty years. After many concerts ( first 1967) I saw her last time 1990 in a concert in Cologne Philharmony. She looked old and fragile, sang sitting on a chair. But she still had great moments. 1993 was Ella's last concert. Then they had both lower legs amputated due diabeties.... She died on June 15 1996. She has not been forgotten and loved forever
Werner Matrisch I did see a documentary about her life and it was sad just how lonely she was with a wonderful bright voice. But this performance came straight from the heart. I literally wept. How fortunate you are to have seen her in person!
Today it would have been my 7th wedding anniversary...And my ex wife used to sing along this song for us, I´cant help feel sad and like crying hearing it again...But life goes on I guess..Even when I will think of her every time I hear this song...
We don't normally thing of Ella as a belter, but here she shows how versatile she is. And I like how she keeps forgetting the lyrics and digs herself out by being so brilliant. I also love how "live" it is; her voice is unadulterated, unfiltered, no autotune, just one woman of incredible skill weavin her magic, the like we'll never see again.
She sang her guts out here, and you can tell she was singing this from a real place in her heart and from a real desire she had to be loved and needed.
This goes straight to the heart. Her voice was a superb instrument that could bring joy and, yes, tears! Thank God for Ella, the supreme singer of our age.
Ella's performance of this amazing song leaves me in tears and speechless. This Berlin concert in 1968 has several other incredible selections. Her emotional interpretation of so many songs may never again be duplicated.
ella takes this song and lives the lyric. lost in the music, she turns out an emotional experience. it is a wonderful performance. thank you for posting this one.
Just try and imagine her sitting near you as you are trying to forget the pains of the day.. wishing you had more to offer the ones that you love, and she gently begins to sing this to you..
Maybe because i'm on acid in the very moment i am writing you, i am writing you. Normally i don't write any coments in youtube. But, after beeing in the fields for over 5 hours (in a beautiful morning in portugal), i return home with a need for this particulary song, of this woman. I live that in blank because right now, i can not find a word to describe this woman as a musician and humanitary. To read your comemnt, is to know that are people that really unders what they are eraring. tk
She picks the best notes! The best sound. The best voice. Everyone sings today as a descendant of a style popularized by many, not least of all Ella, but certainly perfected by Ella. The gold standard.
