Ella Fitzgerald's Signature Singing Style, Explained By Jazzmeia Horn

Ella Fitzgerald is celebrated as one of the most important jazz singers of all time not just for the quality of her voice, but also for her groundbreaking improvisational skills. "Ella could not only sing a melody," says Jazzmeia Horn, "she could scat the hell out of some chord changes and sound just like an instrumentalist." Horn is a creative, expressive jazz singer who's also an impressive improviser. "I like to say that I am continuing the legacy, or the tradition, of vocal improvisation," Horn says. So we asked her to explain what scat singing is and demonstrate her own twist on Fitzgerald's trademark skill.

Ella expressed joy, warmth and strength. There's a mother quality in her voice to me. It's an interesting contrast to Billie Holiday's broken voice who expressed vulnerability and rawness. The voice exposes the personality behind it.

Totally agree. She is the one of the only singers (Blossom Dearie excepted) that I've heard who maintained innocence and purity of sound to her voice as she aged. "The voice exposes the personality behind it." Right on.

Lovely heartfelt cometary it’s so important to understand the history of music its the path that leads to the present . Many modern churches are contemporary, they ignore the hymns of old it’s a slap in the face to the history of the music . I’m not opposed to what’s new but we should not discard the what’s come before.

Jazzmeia, me dear, your NOTES are not Ella's but your SYLLABLES, your vocabulary, is far more similar than your realize (probably because you're busy singing...) Ella had a deeply subconscious effect on your tonality, so even as you evolved as an artist, your roots remain firmly in Ella's linguistic/harmonic web. (I'm a pianist. When I was 10, i had three records, one of which was 'Poinciana.'A couple years ago i heard Ahmad Jamal at age 88 playing in Paris - and he sounded so VERY much like he did in 1952. And I realized that I had been adopting his approach to improvisation for 65 years without realizing - or ever hearing him again.) Our influences truly are subliminal. But Ms. Horn, you DO sing beautifully. As did your mom.

I like this lady’s scat singing more than her regular singing voice. I prefer the clean beauty of Ella as opposed to the more raw kinds like Vaughn and Holiday. Not that their talent is lost on me, I just prefer the smooth singing voice. There’s moments where Ella will have vocal distortion and put on rasp which is great for those improvisational parts; they add character. But for a consistent singing voice, the smooth is key for me.
