So Fallout came out and I think a lot of people were surprised with how good it was. I know that some people didn’t like it, but by and large, it seems to be getting a lot of praise both from fans of the games as well as normies. And now we’re finding out why. The actors on the show have made some incendiary comments that are going super viral. But exactly what did they say that’s thrown everyone into a tizzy? Join me dear viewer, as I dive back into the world of Fallout to explore the Wasteland.

She was great and it’s hilarious how some people really hate it. It’s funny because they clearly haven’t played fallout. 😂😂😂

If I was to carve a Mount Rushmore for the best female action characters on the big and small screen from the mid-70s till now, there would only be three - Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise, Sarah Conner from the Terminator franchise and Lagertha from the Vikings television series. Lucy MacLean is now in contention for the fourth. I am not sure I have seen naivete and badass combined so perfectly into a single character before, and it is all due to the performance of Ella Purnell.

@@OffTheCover That character can't be on my list because I have not watched Yellowstone. The Olivia Dunham character from Fringe is one I should have put on my list. Anna Torv was great in that role, as she was in Mindhunter and The Last of Us.

It sounded a bit like you thought Cavill read The Witcher in order to do the TV show but I think he found the games, then read the books, then was keen to do the show. He's a massive geek and has been playing 40K since he was a small child with his brothers. Well, I imagine at 10 Henry Cavill was one of the biggest kids in his school but you know what I mean. And yes, love for the source material shows through and I'm extremely happy Bethesda have said this TV show is a canon instalment in the game series. Tim Cain has been very positive about it, and I feel like he has more right to have gripes about Fallout lore than we do. I do think there's a trend of better adaptations though recently, it's just that they adapt so many books that it doesn't always feel like it and once you've seen a good one - which is to say, faithful - it's easier to spot a bad one. Preacher was 50% good but while it didn't stick to the plot or chronology, it was thematically well done if a bit tame. The Boys has done pretty well, even though it's toned down. Wanted on the other hand, had every chance to be amazing, started well but wasn't brave enough to tell the story from the graphic novel which would admittedly trigger a lot of people and for good reasons but then, if you can film Hostel and Saw 69 why can't you film other horrific stuff? Invincible and Good Omens have the creators heavily involved so they've done very well and Sandman is doing well too for the same reason (plus salty tears of people who thought they were fans but just realised that Gaiman isn't at all bothered by LGBT people, and they never understood his comics). Dune was alright, but Villeneuve changed far too much from the 'unfilmable' book and omitted too many elements for it to be truly coherent, to me, it's no better or worse than Lynches or the various TV series. Bridgerton seems to have gone down well, no pun intended. The Wheel of Time fans got done over extremely badly, ironically by the same corporation who gave us Fallout, The Boys and a bunch of other good stuff (and a bunch of trashy adaptations). Rings of Power got lots of things right, but as far as I can tell they bought a weird sub-section of rights, and didn't have the rights to use characters properly so they tried to tell a version of the real story which we know from The Silmarillion and other sources, and of course, even though the producers SPEAK ELVISH, they didn't just, you know, tell stories they had rights to and find a way to make that work OR just buy the damned company that made the LOTR films where the rights presumably still sit. I cannot wait to see if the Harry Potter TV show manages to film all seven books back to back in record time and have a whomping willow that doesn't mysteriously move or kids running around in basically what are Muggle grey primary school uniforms instead of robes (which is like, 90% of the wonder of magical boarding school...).

Oh and the Borderlands film (film? tv show?) looks like it might capture the tone and be well done. You never know, we could even reach five good game adaptations before I die an old man.

The thing to keep in mind about Amazon is that it’s pretty ideologically neutral as far as its original shows are concerned. Jeff Bezos is a bit of an actual sci-if/fantasy geek but he doesn’t know anything about making movies or TV. Sometimes Amazon originals slap and sometimes they suck but there’s no secret agenda here. It really just depends on the show runners. Obviously it’s an embarrassment when your studio produces a stinker like Rings of Power or Wheel of Time, but Bezos isn’t the type to double-down on failure. He’ll most likely give those shows another year or two to see if they can get their shit sorted & if they don’t he’ll just let them die on the vine. Amazon is SO much bigger than traditional studios and streaming services. For a company like Disney Rings of Power would be a catastrophe. For Amazon it’s a disappointment that they can turn into a big tax write-odd. Apple is in a similar position. They’re an order of magnitude larger than traditional media companies. They can go into movies and television without having to worry about pleasing anyone. They’ve both produced some stinkers but they’ve also been responsible for some genuinely terrific shows, too. They can afford to make mistakes, even big ones. Also, Amazon (and Apple) don’t need DEI credit# from Blackstone or Vanguard to maintain their margins.

I was expecting the worst adaption of a game series in history, with 16 times the details and unplayable without mods. I was probably wrong, and Ella is a delight. Okay, as a gamer and former Fallout fan, I find it still cynical what the director said, that it would be like a Fallout 5. I want them to make new games, not TV shows, merchandise, ports to a fridge, and updates to the whale trap of their last "Fallout" game. But okay, after Toddshit 76 and Toddfield 77, you lost the right to calling yourself a game developer anyway.

The lastest is Ncuti Gatwa going off on "white mediocrity" and how anyone who doesn't like his portrayal of the Doctor are a bunch of racists. That goes some way beyond mere disrespect. It's baffling to me that so many actors, directors, producers and marketers think that attacking and insulting the fan-base of their franchise is a viable business strategy.

I think especially for her character, she didn't really need to play the game since she's supposed to be this naive fresh-eyed vault dweller and her character is not based on any game character. All they had to do was make a good show and get the lore right. They didn't have to worry about getting plotlines and characters right. For this reason, it can't directly be compared to other game-to-tv adaptations like Halo, The Witcher, and Last of Us in regards to respecting the material.

At least she cared enough to at least know the world she was in and the way fans want it to be respected. I think Elle Purnell's performance was amazing in this series and I'm glad she did take the source material seriously. In fact, I think it's her performance that makes this series as good as it is along with Walton Goggins as the goul. With out ether would have sunken this show.

honestly, i think the problem is that hollyweird stopped looking at us as customers and instead now see us as potential voters. with that in mind all their efforts go into attempting to browbeat their audience with "the latest thing" that sells their brand of politics. most people turn to tv or movies or games to escape that sh1t so it's hardly surprising that they don't want to spend the money that they struggle to earn (largely as a result of the politics they're trying to escape from in the first place!) on the weak trash that keeps getting forced on them. also, Ella Purnell is gorgeous and brilliant and i think i have a teen crush on her....ok, it's a bit late for that i suppose what with me being in my 50's but you have to try right?! as a fallout fan of nearly 2 decades i can say that i was pleasantly surprised and i'm really looking forward to season 2.

I'm on a similar parallel track. Hollywood stopped seeing us as "customers" an started seeing us as "fans". They felt entitled to "fans" money and time. They feel entitled to take their own material and "skin" it with an existing I.P. and seem to believe we *have* to like it and see it. I'm a *customer*. You need to make a product I way to pay and to spend time on. Or I'll walk away.
