The U.S. celebration started in California when Mexican goldminers heard about the victory in Puebla. They celebrated and it became a tradition. It is celebrated in Puebla, Mexico which makes sense. An army of 2,000(Mexico) beating an army of 6,000(France) is definitely worth celebrating.
Candy Bond after 5 de mayo the french army came back Two months later, defeated the mexicans and México was Made a monarchy for the Next 3 years, emperor Maximiliano.
Thank you Ellen for enlightening the ignorant!!!! Would love if some US Americans would stand out in the cold on September 15th and celebrate Mexico's independence day with us instead!!
Lucky 24 which one? Independence from Spain, the civil wars when they govt got rid of the constitution, or the one when the northerners got pissed about elections.
Me as a mexican (not from puebla) i only celebrate it because as a military fanatic i think it was an amazing strategy how they defeated the french army
Hey (h)ellen 😂, I'm visiting LA next month and I was wondering what do i have to do to meet you. I admire you so much because you are smart and funny and kind. Xoxo from Brazil 🤗🤩😘
Yes!! Ellen!!! I'm from Puebla!! ❤❤❤ We celebreted with a parade!. And May 4th in Atlixco we celebreted because it was the first place to win the battle against frenchs, and the next Day was the great battle on Puebla
Ellen i just want to say that you are so inspiring and so amazing and you are my hero you inspire people to do more and i just want to be like you and i love you so much i watch your show everyday I'm your biggest fan😂😂😂
Fith of May was explained to me by a lovely elderly gentleman in Florida. I stood and listened to his story for a half hour. I cared not for the beer I was carrying back for my sisters. But for his story. And now I know. Never leave a Sister Thirsty!
I find it weird how I'm Mexican born in NY but we don't celebrate Cinco de mayo. I'm like its weird how its celebrated here in U.S by Mexican-Americans who are 3rd to 4th generation cuz they forgot their culture & just listen to American stuff but cinco de mayo is not celebrated. Thanl you Ellen for setting it straight
liz Say that to a Boricua, Cuban, Italian, Irish or Dominican etc. you're going to get a response & not a nice one considering people identify with their roots, descent, ethnicity even if generations after.
orando15 because it's celebrated in the US Southwest. You were born in NY, you don't have cultural roots in the US Southwest like many Mexican-Americans do. St Patrick's Day is huge in NY because of the large Irish population there, why wouldn't something celebrating Mexican heritage be popular in CA??? Getting your information and 'facts' from Ellen is pretty lame. 😂 Buy yourself a history book on the topic and inform yourself.
Patiently waiting to wish everyone a great Australian M8s day that happens to be my birthday (48 this year) and shared with Sir David Attenboroughs (91, 17 days after Queen Elizabeth) as swell. Cheers Kkx and much
Educate the masses Ellen! Thank you! I never celebrated or knew anyone that wasn’t from Puebla celebrated cinco se Mayo. We never celebrated this anywhere when I lived in Mexico!
For us mexicans 5 de mayo means nothing, we don't celebrate it at all and we dont understand why you do celebrate it haha. Our independence day is September 16th in case you were wondering
bolillalexi Cinco de Mayo started being celebrated by Mexican-Americans in the late 1800s because there were Mexican-Americans who were fighting in the US civil war against the Confederacy invading these areas. When they found out the Mexicans beat the French in Puebla, they celebrated with parades. They were fighting against racism, colonialism, occupation. You're welcome!
Absolutely true Ellen. Here in México, the only place where it is celebrated is in Puebla, where the Cinco de Mayo battle against the French took place.
im mexican🇲🇽 and its true we dont really take this day as serious as people do in the u.s. many think it is mexico’s independence day, but its not...independence day is in september...
That's because USA was in their civil war and France tried to attack them defeating first to Mexico like strategy BUT Mexico defeated France with guns and support from USA and our general Texan-Mexican Ignacio Zaragoza, victory for USA and Mexico and for all American,America for the Americans :v
Spent 5 de mayo in Mexico and it was just like any other day... except i opened my Snapchat and saw people in the US were drinking/partying. Then I realized what day it was 😂
It's commemorated in all Mexico like a victory for USA,Mexico and all America,America for the Americans, but in the state of Puebla where the battle was they celebrate 5 de mayo, party, tons of food, music, your'e invited
