JC Penney willingly gives away these gift cards. There're probably many terms & conditions attached to them. Just mentioning the store name on the show is publicity already.

Think of it this way: JCP purchases 100 shirts through a contracted vendor. The shirt actually cost the company $1.00 because they are purchasing in bulk. All of the shirts are then retailed at $20. That is a $19 profit for EACH shirt sold. It really isn't hurting JCP as badly as you think, especially if those audience members spend additional money while they are there, which often is the case.

I don't get Mothers Day or Valentines day and other days like that. If i want to give stuff to people i love, i just do it. It's so hypocritical to only give them something in return on those days. (Sorry if my english isn't good, i am not a native speaker)

Our Mother's day was a few days ago. I never celebrate it or do anything! In my defense, Mum never celebrates Son-day! It comes every week yet she never celebrates it!!
Dear Ellen I love you and I adore everything you do. But dont you think Mother's Day is just a BS? I mean really? A special day for mothers? Since when? We were suppose to love our mothers every single day and we should give them gifts and make them happy occasionally, We dont need this Mother's day thingy, or Father's Day. If we keep doing Mother's Day I think some of us will eventually wait for Mother's Day to make thier mom happy, and forget about her for the whole year, it will put impact on some people that they might actually think we only be nice to our moms on Mother's Day which is not right. I wish people wake up from this shit! And realize that you have to love and respect and adore your mother everyday.
Interesting, the founder Anna Jarvis, wanted the day to be a sentimental memorial and honoring of one's mother. When it became commercialized, she opposed the holiday she created. So I believe Anna Jarvis would agree with you in theory. It is interesting that many countries followed the US in creating a holiday similar but some do religious events and some do special honoring ceremonies. That is pretty cool.
